The shifting classroom: impact of heightened seasonal heat in education through sentiment and topic modeling
This research applies text mining techniques to examine sentiments and themes among Filipino students adjusting to full in-person classes after pandemic-driven flexible learning, focusing on their experiences during April to June 2023–a period usually marked by vacations due to intense heat. By applying the natural language toolkit (NLTK) for sentiment analysis and Scikit-learn for topic modeling, the study gathered data from Filipino students on their in-person class experiences during this unique calendar shift. Post data cleaning, NLTK was used for sentiment analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation for topic modeling. The findings indicate that the high temperatures adversely affected students, as evidenced by frequent references to terms such as “room,” “focus,” and “hard.” The study identified a mix of positive and negative sentiments and highlighted key issues like academic challenges and the learning environment’s impact. This study also offered insights into students’ coping strategies during extreme heat. These results stressed the importance of considering environmental factors in educational planning and provide actionable insights for institutions to enhance the in-person learning experience, particularly in challenging weather conditions. Moreover, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of sentiment analysis and topic modeling in understanding and unraveling student experiences in specific contexts

Mapping The Interstellar Medium With Near-Infrared Diffuse Interstellar Bands
We map the distribution and properties of the Milky Way's interstellar medium as traced by diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) detected in near-infrared stellar spectra from the SDSS-III/APOGEE survey. Focusing exclusively on the strongest DIB in the H band, at lambda similar to 1.527 mu m, we present a projected map of the DIB absorption field in the Galactic plane, using a set of about 60,000 sightlines that reach up to 15 kpc from the Sun and probe up to 30 mag of visual extinction. The strength of this DIB is linearly correlated with dust reddening over three orders of magnitude in both DIB equivalent width (Wpm) and extinction, with a power law index of 1.01 +/- 0.01, a mean relationship of W-DIB/A(v) = 0.1 angstrom mag(-1) and a dispersion of similar to 0.05 angstrom mag(-1) at extinctions characteristic of the Galactic midplane. These properties establish this DIB as a powerful, independent probe of dust extinction over a wide range of Av values. The subset of about 14,000 robustly detected DIB features have a W-DIB distribution that follows an exponential trend. We empirically determine the intrinsic rest wavelength of this transition to be lambda(0) = 15 272.42 angstrom and use it to calculate absolute radial velocities of the carrier, which display the kinematical signature of the rotating Galactic disk. We probe the DIB carrier distribution in three dimensions and show that it can be characterized by an exponential disk model with a scale height of about 100 pc and a scale length of about 5 kpc. Multiphoton microfabrication of conducting polymer-based biomaterials
We report the application of multiphoton microfabrication to prepare conducting polymer (CP)-based biomaterials that were capable of drug delivery and interacting with brain tissue ex vivo, thereby highlighting the potential of multiphoton lithography to prepare electroactive biomaterials which may function as implantable neural biointerfaces (e.g. electrodes)
The Determinants of the Underemployment Gender Gap in the Philippines: A Decomposition Analysis
Underemployment is a prevalent labor market issue around the globe. It reflects how an individual can be employed but is unable to work to their desired number of hours, receive sufficient wages, or fully utilize their skills, leaving them in precarious working conditions. Studies on underemployment and its gendered impact in the Philippines remains limited with most labor studies primarily addressing wage and unemployment. This study addresses this gap by identifying the factors contributing to underemployment and gender-based inequalities in the Philippines. Using quarterly data from the Labor Force Survey from 2012 to 2021, we distinguished between visible and invisible underemployment based on the number of hours worked per week. To analyze the determinants of these two forms of underemployment, we employed a probit model with Heckman’s two-step sample correction that considers workers\u27 individual, organizational, and social characteristics. We then executed an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to estimate the visible and invisible underemployment gender gap and its component. We found that men have a higher probability of visible and invisible underemployment compared to women primarily because of endowments in education and occupational choice, although there is evidence men are rewarded more in the labor market than women. One policy recommendation is to improve upskilling, reskilling, and education programs for workers, especially for highly vulnerable demographics such as less-educated rural male workers
Highly Stereoselective Biocatalytic Synthesis of Key Cyclopropane Intermediate to Ticagrelor
Extending the scope of biocatalysis to important non-natural reactions such as olefin cyclopropanation will open new opportunities for replacing multistep chemical syntheses of pharmaceutical intermediates with efficient, clean, and highly selective enzyme-catalyzed processes. In this work, we engineered the truncated globin of Bacillus subtilis for the synthesis of a cyclopropane precursor to the antithrombotic agent ticagrelor. The engineered enzyme catalyzes the cyclopropanation of 3,4-difluorostyrene with ethyl diazoacetate on a preparative scale to give ethyl-(1R, 2R)-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-cyclopropanecarboxylate in 79% yield, with very high diastereoselectivity (>99% dr) and enantioselectivity (98% ee), enabling a single-step biocatalytic route to this pharmaceutical intermediate
Physicians Infrequently Adhere to Hepatitis Vaccination Guidelines for Chronic Liver Disease
Background and Goals:Hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis B (HBV) vaccination in patients with chronic liver disease is an accepted standard of care. We determined HAV and HBV vaccination rates in a tertiary care referral hepatology clinic and the impact of electronic health record (EHR)-based reminders on adherence to vaccination guidelines.Methods:We reviewed the records of 705 patients with chronic liver disease referred to our liver clinic in 2008 with at least two follow-up visits during the subsequent year. Demographics, referral source, etiology, and hepatitis serology were recorded. We determined whether eligible patients were offered vaccination and whether patients received vaccination. Barriers to vaccination were determined by a follow-up telephone interview.Results:HAV and HBV serologic testing prior to referral and at the liver clinic were performed in 14.5% and 17.7%; and 76.7% and 74% patients, respectively. Hepatologists recommended vaccination for HAV in 63% and for HBV in 59.7% of eligible patients. Patient demographics or disease etiology did not influence recommendation rates. Significant variability was observed in vaccination recommendation amongst individual providers (30-98.6%), which did not correlate with the number of patients seen by each physician. Vaccination recommendation rates were not different for Medicare patients with hepatitis C infection for whom a vaccination reminder was automatically generated by the EHR. Most patients who failed to get vaccination after recommendation offered no specific reason for noncompliance; insurance was a barrier in a minority.Conclusions:Hepatitis vaccination rates were suboptimal even in an academic, sub-speciality setting, with wide-variability in provider adherence to vaccination guidelines. © 2013 Thudi et al
Proof-of-concept study exploring the effect of spesolimab in patients with moderate-to-severe hidradenitis suppurativa:A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial
Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a considerable disease burden. Existing treatment options are limited and often suboptimal; a high unmet need exists for effective targeted therapies. Objectives: To explore the effects of spesolimab treatment in patients with HS. Methods: This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled proof-of-clinical-concept (PoCC) study was conducted at 25 centres across 12 countries from 3 May 2021 to 21 April 2022. Patients had moderate-to-severe HS for ≥ 1 year before enrolment. Patients were randomized (2: 1) to receive a loading dose of 3600-mg intravenous spesolimab (1200 mg at weeks 0, 1 and 2) or matching placebo, followed by maintenance with either 1200-mg subcutaneous spesolimab every 2 weeks from weeks 4 to 10 or matching placebo. The primary endpoint was the percentage change from baseline in total abscess and inflammatory nodule (AN) count at week 12. Secondary endpoints were the absolute change from baseline in the International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity Score System (IHS4), percentage change from baseline in draining tunnel (dT) count, the proportion of patients achieving a dT count of 0, absolute change from baseline in the revised Hidradenitis Suppurativa Area and Severity Index (HASI-R), the proportion of patients achieving Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Response (HiSCR50), the proportion of patients with ≥ 1 flare (all at week 12) and patient-reported outcomes. Results: In this completed trial, randomized patients (n = 52) received spesolimab (n = 35) or placebo (n = 17). The difference vs. placebo in least squares mean is reported. At week 12, the percentage change in total AN count was similar between treatment arms: -4.1% [95% confidence interval (CI) -31.7 to 23.4]. There was greater numerical improvement in the spesolimab arm, as measured by IHS4 (13.9, 95% CI -25.6 to -2.3); percentage change from baseline in dT count (-96.6%, 95% CI -154.5 to -38.8); and the proportion of patients achieving a dT count of 0 (18.3%, 95% CI -7.9 to 37.5). Spesolimab treatment also improved HASI-R and HiSCR50 vs. placebo. Spesolimab demonstrated a favourable safety profile, similar to that observed in trials in other diseases. Conclusions: This exploratory PoCC study supports the development of spesolimab as a new therapeutic option in HS.</p
The Influence of Different Light Angles During Standardized Patient Photographic Assessment on the Aesthetic Perception of the Face
BACKGROUND 2D baseline and follow-up clinical images are potentially subject to inconsistency due to alteration of imaging parameters. However, no study to date has attempted to quantify the magnitude by which such images can be influenced. OBJECTIVE The objective of the present study is to identify the magnitude by which images can be influenced by changing the imaging light angle. METHODS This study is based on the evaluation of 2D frontal images of the face and included a total of 51 subjects of which n = 14 were males and n = 37 were females. Faces were photographed at 0°, 30°, and 60° light angle under identical and standardized conditions. Images were randomized and rated by 27 blinded raters for age, facial attractiveness, body mass index (BMI), temporal hollowing, lower cheek fullness, nasolabial sulcus severity, and jawline contour. RESULTS Facial attractiveness decreased, facial unattractiveness increased and the evaluated BMI (based on facial assessment) increased statistically significantly at 60°. The assessment of regional facial scores, i.e., temporal hollowing, lower cheek fullness, and jawline contour, showed no statistically meaningful changes both at 30° and at 60° light angle. CONCLUSION The results indicate that there might be an observed blind range in light angle (0°-30°) which does not influence facial assessment. Increasing the light angle past the threshold value to 60° might result in a statistically significant impact on facial perception which should be accounted for when documenting and/or presenting facial 2D images.
