Less but Better? Teaching Maths in Further Education and Collateral Growth

    Get PDF
The paper presents and explores the experience of maths students studying in a context shaped by a core concept maths curriculum. The three vignettes that illuminate experience are drawn from a larger research project that worked with five teachers and 630 learners aged 16−18 in Further Education classrooms in England. Analysis involved distinguishing different understandings of being good at maths, different views of a good maths curriculum and identifying enablers and barriers to being a ‘successful’ maths student. Dewey’s ideas about focused experience and collateral learning were used to deepen this analysis. The paper reports a surprising finding. In some cases, students recognize the positive impact learning maths had on developing their wider human capabilities. Maths teachers in England, working in the context of ‘new public management’, may find reasons to take heart from the accounts of teaching and learning presented. For the international reader who is grappling with the challenge of reengaging maths students, the accounts of what matters to students could spur a reconsideration of priorities and practice

Weight optimization of an aerobrake structural concept for a lunar transfer vehicle

    Get PDF
An aerobrake structural concept for a lunar transfer vehicle was weight optimized through the use of the Taguchi design method, finite element analyses, and element sizing routines. Six design parameters were chosen to represent the aerobrake structural configuration. The design parameters included honeycomb core thickness, diameter-depth ratio, shape, material, number of concentric ring frames, and number of radial frames. Each parameter was assigned three levels. The aerobrake structural configuration with the minimum weight was 44 percent less than the average weight of all the remaining satisfactory experimental configurations. In addition, the results of this study have served to bolster the advocacy of the Taguchi method for aerospace vehicle design. Both reduced analysis time and an optimized design demonstrated the applicability of the Taguchi method to aerospace vehicle design

Contracting and Vertical Coordination in the United States Pork Industry

. .Coordination activities in the pork production industry-are growing rapidly; These range \u27 from the totally integrated system through ownership, to that which bridges\u27the input supply, production, processing and merchandising segments through various informal or formal forms of coordination; For example, some arrangements involve contract for production or delivery of products of a specified amount, quality,\u27 etc. Still others may involve agreements or\u27 linkages between independent participants in the industry. All are aimed at improving the participants competitive positioned the industry over.what it would be without the linkages. Industry development or adjustment is riot uniform^ across regions in the United States. This manuscript documents those differences, outlining some reasons for the differences. Additionally, competitive relationships along-with contract growth and a comparison of returns and risks of selected contracts are presented

Growth Bands in Test Plates of the Sea Urchins Arbacia punctulata and Lytechinus variegatus (Echinodermata) on the Central Florida Gulf Coast Shelf

    Get PDF
Growth bands in test plates provide information about the biology and ecology of sea urchins. We documented the bands in the test plates of Arbacia punctulata and Lytechinus variegatus at different seasons and locations on the central Florida Gulf Coast shelf. The number of growth bands in test plates is significantly correlated with test diameter for A. punctulata. The number of growth bands is not significantly correlated with test diameter for L. variegatus. The condition of the outermost growth band was recorded along with the month and reproductive state to investigate the effect of variation in reproduction and temperature on growth. Growth bands in A. punctulata are well defined and appear to be related to the reproductive cycle. Growth bands in L. variegatus are less well defined and may be more closely related to food availability

A new Brachypsectra LeConte from Australia (Coleoptera: Brachypsectridae) with comparative notes on adults and larvae

    Get PDF
A new species, Brachypsectra cleidecostae Lawrence, Monteith & Reid sp. nov., is described from Australia on the basis of one reared adult female from inland Queensland and larvae from the type locality and two other widely separated semi-arid localities in South Australia and Western Australia. Two of the four larval collections were from under tree bark and one was from ground litter. The species is differentiated on both adult and larval characters. The broader mandible with retention of a retinacular tooth may indicate a sister relationship with species of the genus from other continents
