Event-triggered Pulse Control with Model Learning (if Necessary)
In networked control systems, communication is a shared and therefore scarce
resource. Event-triggered control (ETC) can achieve high performance control
with a significantly reduced amount of samples compared to classical, periodic
control schemes. However, ETC methods usually rely on the availability of an
accurate dynamics model, which is oftentimes not readily available. In this
paper, we propose a novel event-triggered pulse control strategy that learns
dynamics models if necessary. In addition to adapting to changing dynamics, the
method also represents a suitable replacement for the integral part typically
used in periodic control.Comment: Accepted final version to appear in: Proc. of the American Control

Risk in agriculture : attitude and risk management based on six farms
The purpose of this study is to investigate in farmers' decision making in relation to risk. More specifically it investigates and identifies the basic sources/domains of risk. Within each source/domain each personâs attitude and risk management perspective is identified and analyzed.
This study is based on qualitative interviews with six farmers in Halland County in the southwest of Sweden. The farmers identify from their own perspectives the largest risk domain on their farm and clarify how they manage that risk. Six allegations regarding farmers' risk-taking made in a format called "Likert statement scale" were used during the interviews to capture each farmerâs general risk attitude.
Farmers perceive risk in a number of domains, for example production, price/market, financial, personal and human related and institutional areas. Perceived risk is managed with a mix of risk management tools identified by earlier literature; in addition to that other procedures were taken to decrease the risk on the farms. Four out of six farmers experience person and human related risk to be the greatest, especially their own health and the human resources related to the farm. The institutional risk is considered to be the least significant risk according to all farmers in the study; it is just a matter of adapting the operations to new rules.
Farmers have to different extents a risk aversion attitude in all domains, which cohere with previous literature. The qualitative interview study demonstrates that the risk is more associated with individual perception of the risk more than different attitudes towards the expected risk
UrsÀkta, men hur löd klimatfrÄgan?
Environmental concepts are nowdays used so often that their meanings can be questioned. It seems as if everyone claims to act in a sustainable way. But what does sustainability really mean? If actors do not share the same understanding of environmental concepts it will be impossible to address the problem in question. Theories exist stating that it is through policy that society defines a problem and also gives concepts like "sustainability" a common definition. This essay studies the understanding of the "climate transition" concept among environmental stakeholder in the region of SkÄne, in Southern Sweden. The study therefore focuses on how this concept is being used in regional environmental policy and how it is being used by regional stakeholders. The study shows that the understanding of environmental problems in general is rather similar. However, the notion on how to address the problems differs. The understanding of the "climate adaptation" concept also differs. The policy-discourse sees no need to change our ways of living since climate adaptation and economic growth go hand in hand. Conversely, most regional actors do not share the view of the policy-discourse and see the need of societal changes. These changes are held back by an insufficient political system and among the regional actors there is a general distrust in the political system to handle environmental issues
Identifying Causal Structure in Dynamical Systems
We present a method for automatically identifying the causal structure of a
dynamical control system. Through a suitable experiment design and subsequent
causal analysis, the method reveals, which state and input variables of the
system have a causal influence on each other. The experiment design builds on
the concept of controllability, which provides a systematic way to compute
input trajectories that steer the system to specific regions in its state
space. For the causal analysis, we leverage powerful techniques from causal
inference and extend them to control systems. Further, we derive conditions
that guarantee discovery of the true causal structure of the system and show
that the obtained knowledge of the causal structure reduces the complexity of
model learning and yields improved generalization capabilities. Experiments on
a robot arm demonstrate reliable causal identification from real-world data and
extrapolation to regions outside the training domain
Beaver has historically been a key species for the ecosystem with the ability to create natural wetlands. After its extinction in the 19th century, it was reintroduced in the Swedish landscape in 1920. The food of beavers consists largely of deciduous trees from shoreline forests. In forestry, a buffer zone is usually saved adjacent to wetlands to promote natural diversity, which is often the beaver's natural food source.
A study has been conducted with a view to getting a broader picture of the impact of beavers on buffer zones in lake landscapes. The focus is on investigating how the presence of beavers affects the occurrence of dead wood and tree species distribution in the buffer zone.
The field study has been carried out at three lakes in VĂ€stmanland County. A total of 90 test areas were laid out, distributed over the three lakes. Within the surface all standing and lying trees were clad and in addition all stumps were measured to reconstruct how the buffer zone would look without the influence of beavers.
If one compares the actual level of dead wood with the simulated level one would have had without beaver influence, the study indicates that the amount of lying dead wood is doubled with beaver. In the study, the volume of lying dead wood on average from 6.0 to 11.3 mÂł / ha with beaver.
The tree species mixture was affected to some extent because the beavers impact was primarily on small deciduous trees. As a result, the conifers in the buffer zone increased from 70.6 percent to 74.9 percent.
More of the smaller trees were affected by beavers than the large ones. Of the stems above 25 centimeters at breast height, 4.1 percent were affected compared to those between 10 and 20 centimeters where 37.6 percent were affected by beavers.
The conclusion from the study is thus that the beaver negatively affects the broadleaves part of the buffer zone but contributes to more lying dead wood. However, the impact on the coarse deciduous trees is very low and the beaver generally causes few damage to living trees
