Partnership law for the new millennium
Paper outlining the history of partnership law in the United Kingdom and suggested proposals from the Law Commission for England and Wales and the Scottish Law Commission for reform to problem areas such as: the firm as equity, unnecessary closure of business and mechanisms for dissolution of solvent partnerships. Article taken from the introduction given by Professor Henning at the conference on partnership law reform staged on 4th June 2001 by the Centre for Corporate Law and Practice at the IALS, the Law Commission for England and Wales, and the Scottish Law Commission. Published in Amicus Curiae - Journal of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and its Society for Advanced Legal Studies.
Conformal Symmetry as a Template: Commensurate Scale Relations and Physics Renormalization Schemes
Commensurate scale relations are perturbative QCD predictions which relate
observable to observable at fixed relative scale, such as the "generalized
Crewther relation", which connects the Bjorken and Gross-Llewellyn Smith deep
inelastic scattering sum rules to measurements of the e+ e- annihilation cross
section. We show how conformal symmetry provides a template for such QCD
predictions, providing relations between observables which are present even in
theories which are not scale invariant. All non-conformal effects are absorbed
by fixing the ratio of the respective momentum transfer and energy scales. In
the case of fixed-point theories, commensurate scale relations relate both the
ratio of couplings and the ratio of scales as the fixed point is approached. In
the case of the scheme defined from heavy quark interactions,
virtual corrections due to fermion pairs are analytically incorporated into the
Gell-Mann Low function, thus avoiding the problem of explicitly computing and
resumming quark mass corrections related to the running of the coupling.
Applications to the decay width of the Z boson, the BFKL pomeron, and virtual
photon scattering are discussed.Comment: 27 pages, Talk presented at the Les Rencontres de Physique de la

A method of moments estimator of tail dependence
In the world of multivariate extremes, estimation of the dependence structure
still presents a challenge and an interesting problem. A procedure for the
bivariate case is presented that opens the road to a similar way of handling
the problem in a truly multivariate setting. We consider a semi-parametric
model in which the stable tail dependence function is parametrically modeled.
Given a random sample from a bivariate distribution function, the problem is to
estimate the unknown parameter. A method of moments estimator is proposed where
a certain integral of a nonparametric, rank-based estimator of the stable tail
dependence function is matched with the corresponding parametric version. Under
very weak conditions, the estimator is shown to be consistent and
asymptotically normal. Moreover, a comparison between the parametric and
nonparametric estimators leads to a goodness-of-fit test for the semiparametric
model. The performance of the estimator is illustrated for a discrete spectral
measure that arises in a factor-type model and for which likelihood-based
methods break down. A second example is that of a family of stable tail
dependence functions of certain meta-elliptical distributions.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.3150/08-BEJ130 the Bernoulli

Deixis in Inside Sumatera Magazine
This study attempts to investigate deixis found in the articles of Inside Sumatera Magazine, especially in Adventure, Destination and Travelling coloums. It was conducted to discover the types of deixis as proposed by Cruse (2000) namely: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The objectives of this study is to describe type of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in articles of Inside Sumatera magazine. This study was taken from the article of Inside sumatera magazine and ten article are taken as the samples. Documentary technique is due in collecting data. The findings show that the total number of deixis from the whole articles were 1504 occurrences, 656 occurrences (43.62%) was person deixis, 465 occurrences (30.92%) was place deixis, 227 occurrences (15.09%) was time deixis, 137 occurrences (9.10%) was discourse deixis, and 19 occurrences (1.27%) was social deixis. Person deixis is the dominant type used in those article (43.62%)
