    A PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF THE CONTEMPORARY TEACHER ROLE IN ENGLAND: A FOCUS ON MOTIVATION, TEACHING SATISFACTION, AND STRESS EXPERIENCES,OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS.

    Background and purpose – The teacher role is dynamic and complex, with both individual and structural factors influencing the teaching experience. The target orientated culture of contemporary education can have a negative impact on teachers’ motivation and satisfaction at work. It is a challenge for teachers to remain effective in role in times of educational change, which pose a threat to satisfaction and may induce stress for teachers. The secondary school level specifically, has noted a variety of reforms, which alongside managing the changing nature of the classroom environment, may influence the teacher role in a negative way. The purpose of this study was to explore motivation, satisfaction, and stress experiences of secondary school teachers in England. Design and method – An online quantitative survey, which included measures of motivation, satisfaction, and stress, collected data from a representative sample of secondary school teachers (N=1288). In part one of the study, structural equation modelling was applied to explore the relationships between factors of Self Determination Theory and teaching satisfaction, while controlling for specified covariates. In part two of the study, hierarchical moderated regression analysis was conducted to explore teaching satisfaction as a moderator in relationships between stressors and a variety of stress manifestations, in line with the Job Demands-Resources framework. Results – In part one of the study, only perceived competence was found to be significantly related to teaching satisfaction in both samples. In part two of the study, for females reporting low levels of satisfaction, significant relationships were found between emotional stress and both work-related stressors and professional distress. For males with low satisfaction levels, discipline/motivation stressors were significantly related with both cardiovascular and behavioural stress manifestations. A significant relationship was found between professional distress and emotional manifestations of stress in female teachers with high levels of satisfaction. Significant relationships between professional investment and emotional, fatigue, and cardiovascular manifestations were shown for male teachers reporting high levels of teaching satisfaction. Conclusion – Teaching competence is related to teaching satisfaction at the secondary school level. It is recommended that future studies focus specifically on factors which may contribute to teachers’ perceived competence within role, including appropriate classroom management techniques and effective teaching pedagogies. It is recommended that future research on teacher stress should be based on assessing male and female teachers independently. It is proposed that schools should consider targeting the reported sources of teacher stress and should further target teachers’ satisfaction in role. Schools and policy makers need to come together to devise professional development opportunities for teachers. Additional research is needed to guide the direction of professional development initiatives in secondary schools. The implementation of competency strategies would enhance satisfaction in role, and may further contribute to reducing teacher stress. Originality/value – This is the first known research to specifically focus on the moderating role of teaching satisfaction on relationships between stressors and manifestations of stress in secondary school teachers in England. Female teacher stress is predominantly psychological, whilst male teacher stress is experienced at a biopsychosocial level. The employed advanced statistical procedures, together with a large sample, contribute to the validity of findings. Perceived teaching competence is the more prominent need in relation to teaching satisfaction

    The effect of positively framed and negatively framed messages on televised smoking cessation advertisement success : a systematic review

    Background: Smoking cessation campaigns aim to decrease the prevalence of smoking in the community. However, smoking cessation campaigns can be expensive to develop and implement, therefore is it essential that campaigns have high impact and broad reach to ensure the most efficient use of resources. Method: A systematic review was conducted in October 2020 to assess the efficacy of positively framed and negatively framed messages used in televised smoking cessation advertisements. The search was restricted to quantitative primary research published between 2010 and 2020, yielding 4640 results. Study selection was performed using the PRISMA method. Population was inclusive of all ages and smoking status. A total of 15 articles met the criteria for review. Results: Negative messages were found to increase the likelihood of a smoker intending to quit, attempting to quit, successfully quitting, or calling a quitline, while some studies found that positive messages increased confidence to quit and calls to quitline. Combination of negative and positive messages were found to complement one another and were more successful at influencing quit behaviour than using either message type alone. However, findings were not consistent across all studies. Conclusion: The results of this review may be used to inform the development of future smoking cessation advertisements to ensure content is relevant, effective, and cost-efficient. Further exploration of the efficacy of positive and negative messages on target populations would be valuable to advise the design of cessation campaigns. © 2023 College of Public Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University.     A data-driven algorithm to support the clinical decision-making of patient extrication following a road traffic collision

    Background: Some patients involved in a road traffic collision (RTC) are physically entrapped and extrication is required to provide critical interventions. This can be performed either in an expedited way, or in a more controlled manner. In this study we aimed to derive a data-driven extrication algorithm intended to be used as a decision-support tool by on scene emergency service providers to decide on the optimal method of patient extrication from the vehicle.Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed of all trauma patients trapped after an RTC who were attended by a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in the United Kingdom between March 2013 and December 2021. Variables were identified that were associated with the need for HEMS interventions (as a surrogate for the need for expedited extrication), based on which a practical extrication algorithm was devised.Results: During the study period 12,931 patients were attended, of which 920 were physically trapped. Patients who scored an “A” on the AVPU score (n = 531) rarely required HEMS interventions (3%). Those who did were characterised by a shorter than average (29 vs. 37 min) 999/112 emergency call to HEMS on-scene arrival interval. A third of all patients responding to voice required HEMS interventions. Absence of a patent airway (OR 6.98 [1.74–28.03] p &lt;.001) and the absence of palpable radial pulses (OR 9.99 [2.48–40.18] p &lt;.001) were independently associated with the need for (one or more) HEMS interventions in this group. Patients only responding to pain and unresponsive patients almost invariably needed HEMS interventions post extrication (90% and 86% respectively). Based on these findings, a practical and easy to remember algorithm “APEX” was derived.Conclusion: A simple, data-driven algorithm, remembered by the acronym “APEX”, may help emergency service providers on scene to determine the preferred method of extrication for patients who are trapped after a road traffic collision. This has the potential to facilitate earlier recognition of a ‘sick’ critical patient trapped in an RTC, decrease entrapment and extrication time, and may contribute to an improved outcome for these patients.</p

    Latrobe City Council Community Engagement Survey 2021 Analysis

    As part of Latrobe City’s community engagement strategy, a survey was developed and distributed during May to June 2021, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data to capture feedback and suggestions on how Latrobe City could be a better place to live, work, visit and play. The survey also invited residents to share their thoughts on current and future challenges for the City. A total of 1552 responses to the survey were received of which 69 were blank, with 1453 making up the final data set. This report highlights the findings from the survey. The majority of the participants were female (65%, n=744), 33% were from Traralgon, 35% from smaller townships with the remaining 32% from Moe, Newborough, Morwell and Churchill. The participants ranged in age from 17-30 years (15%), 31-40 years (27%), 41-70 years (43%) 70+ years (10%). The majority of the participants were employed in healthcare, education and administrative roles with 89% stating that they live and work in Latrobe City. Friends are family was cited as the most common reason why participants believed that Latrobe City was a good place, with Location in Victoria, Affordability and Natural environment rounding off the top four responses. The most common reason people gave for Latrobe City being a good place to work was Distance from home (n=504) and similarly the most common reason participants gave for it being a good place to study was Close to home. Safety, Economy and Built environment were considered the things most important for Latrobe City Council to focus on this was evident in both the quantitative and qualitative responses. A thematic analysis process was used to analyse the content from the six open-ended questions in the survey. Six main themes emerged; Employment, Safety, Transport, Education, Sport and Entertainment and Hope for the future

    The development of a protocol for diagnosing hand dermatitis from photographic images

    Background: A hand photography protocol was needed to ascertain the presence and severity of dermatitis in a trial testing the effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention to prevent hand dermatitis in nurses. Methods: We developed the protocol in three stages: (i) established a procedure for collecting hand photographs; (ii) conducted a stepwise validation process to agree rules for diagnosing and determining severity of hand dermatitis and; (iii) trained a research nurse to screen out ‘clear’ cases. Results: We developed and trained fieldworkers (n=97) in a procedure for collecting hand photographs. Study dermatologists established interpretation rules to diagnose and determine the severity of dermatitis from photographs. Prior to the establishment of the rules, inter-observer agreement between the two dermatologists on the presence or absence of hand dermatitis was moderate (kappa 0.5). At the final stage of the validation process, the dermatologists agreed on 88% cases from independent assessments, with consensus reached for the remaining 12% following joint deliberation. Following training, a subgroup analysis of 250 cases screened by the nurse and characterised as ‘clear’ found two (0.8%) ‘positive’ cases were missed. Conclusion: We have developed a hand photography protocol, which may be used in other studies or in hand dermatitis health surveillance programmes

    Comparing the ecological impacts of native and invasive crayfish: could native species' translocation do more harm than good?

    Biological invasions are a principal threat to global biodiversity. Omnivores, such as crayfish, are among the most important groups of invaders. Their introduction often results in biodiversity loss, particularly of their native counterparts. Managed relocations of native crayfish from areas under threat from invasive crayfish into isolated ‘ark sites’ are sometimes suggested as a conservation strategy for native crayfish; however, such relocations may have unintended detrimental consequences for the recipient ecosystem. Despite this, there have been few attempts to quantify the relative impacts of native and invasive crayfish on aquatic ecosystems. To address this deficiency we conducted a meta-analysis on the effects of native and invasive crayfish on nine ecosystem components: decomposition rate, primary productivity, plant biomass, invertebrate density, biomass and diversity, fish biomass and refuge use, and amphibian larval survival. Native and invasive crayfish significantly reduced invertebrate density and biomass, fish biomass and amphibian survival rate and significantly increased decomposition rates. Invasive crayfish also significantly reduced plant biomass and invertebrate diversity and increased primary productivity. These results show that native and invasive crayfish have wide-ranging impacts on aquatic ecosystems that may be exacerbated for invasive species. Subsequent analysis showed that the impacts of invasive crayfish were significantly greater, in comparison to native crayfish, for decomposition and primary productivity but not invertebrate density, biomass and diversity. Overall, our findings reconfirm the ecosystem altering abilities of both native and invasive crayfish, enforcing the need to carefully regulate managed relocations of native species as well as to develop control programs for invasives

    A dataset of nectar sugar production for flowering plants found in urban green spaces

    Nectar and pollen are floral resources that provide food for insect pollinators, so quantifying their supplies can help us to understand and mitigate pollinator declines. However, most existing datasets of floral resource measurements focus on native plants found in rural landscapes, so cannot be used effectively for estimating supplies in urban green spaces, where non-native ornamental plants often predominate. We sampled floral nectar sugar in 225 plant taxa found in UK residential gardens and other urban green spaces, focussing on the most common species. The vast majority (94%) of our sampled taxa are non-native, filling an important research gap and ensuring these data are also relevant outside of the United Kingdom. Our dataset includes values of daily nectar sugar production for all 225 taxa and nectar sugar concentration for around half (102) of those sampled. Nectar extraction was conducted according to published methods, ensuring our values can be combined with other datasets. We anticipate that the two main uses of these data are (1) to estimate the nectar production of habitats and landscapes and (2) to identify high-nectar plants of conservation importance. To increase the utility of our data, we provide guidance for scaling nectar values up from single flowers to floral units, as is commonly done in field studies

    High-Content, High-Throughput Analysis of Cell Cycle Perturbations Induced by the HSP90 Inhibitor XL888

    BACKGROUND: Many proteins that are dysregulated or mutated in cancer cells rely on the molecular chaperone HSP90 for their proper folding and activity, which has led to considerable interest in HSP90 as a cancer drug target. The diverse array of HSP90 client proteins encompasses oncogenic drivers, cell cycle components, and a variety of regulatory factors, so inhibition of HSP90 perturbs multiple cellular processes, including mitogenic signaling and cell cycle control. Although many reports have investigated HSP90 inhibition in the context of the cell cycle, no large-scale studies have examined potential correlations between cell genotype and the cell cycle phenotypes of HSP90 inhibition. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To address this question, we developed a novel high-content, high-throughput cell cycle assay and profiled the effects of two distinct small molecule HSP90 inhibitors (XL888 and 17-AAG [17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin]) in a large, genetically diverse panel of cancer cell lines. The cell cycle phenotypes of both inhibitors were strikingly similar and fell into three classes: accumulation in M-phase, G2-phase, or G1-phase. Accumulation in M-phase was the most prominent phenotype and notably, was also correlated with TP53 mutant status. We additionally observed unexpected complexity in the response of the cell cycle-associated client PLK1 to HSP90 inhibition, and we suggest that inhibitor-induced PLK1 depletion may contribute to the striking metaphase arrest phenotype seen in many of the M-arrested cell lines. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our analysis of the cell cycle phenotypes induced by HSP90 inhibition in 25 cancer cell lines revealed that the phenotypic response was highly dependent on cellular genotype as well as on the concentration of HSP90 inhibitor and the time of treatment. M-phase arrest correlated with the presence of TP53 mutations, while G2 or G1 arrest was more commonly seen in cells bearing wt TP53. We draw upon previous literature to suggest an integrated model that accounts for these varying observations

    Effect of Deutetrabenazine on Chorea Among Patients With Huntington Disease A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Importance Deutetrabenazine is a novel molecule containing deuterium, which attenuates CYP2D6 metabolism and increases active metabolite half-lives and may therefore lead to stable systemic exposure while preserving key pharmacological activity. Objective To evaluate efficacy and safety of deutetrabenazine treatment to control chorea associated with Huntington disease. Design, Setting, and Participants Ninety ambulatory adults diagnosed with manifest Huntington disease and a baseline total maximal chorea score of 8 or higher (range, 0-28; lower score indicates less chorea) were enrolled from August 2013 to August 2014 and randomized to receive deutetrabenazine (n = 45) or placebo (n = 45) in a double-blind fashion at 34 Huntington Study Group sites. Interventions Deutetrabenazine or placebo was titrated to optimal dose level over 8 weeks and maintained for 4 weeks, followed by a 1-week washout. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary end point was the total maximal chorea score change from baseline (the average of values from the screening and day-0 visits) to maintenance therapy (the average of values from the week 9 and 12 visits) obtained by in-person visits. This study was designed to detect a 2.7-unit treatment difference in scores. The secondary end points, assessed hierarchically, were the proportion of patients who achieved treatment success on the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) and on the Clinical Global Impression of Change (CGIC), the change in 36-Item Short Form– physical functioning subscale score (SF-36), and the change in the Berg Balance Test. Results Ninety patients with Huntington disease (mean age, 53.7 years; 40 women [44.4%]) were enrolled. In the deutetrabenazine group, the mean total maximal chorea scores improved from 12.1 (95% CI, 11.2-12.9) to 7.7 (95% CI, 6.5-8.9), whereas in the placebo group, scores improved from 13.2 (95% CI, 12.2-14.3) to 11.3 (95% CI, 10.0-12.5); the mean between-group difference was –2.5 units (95% CI, –3.7 to –1.3) (P < .001). Treatment success, as measured by the PGIC, occurred in 23 patients (51%) in the deutetrabenazine group vs 9 (20%) in the placebo group (P = .002). As measured by the CGIC, treatment success occurred in 19 patients (42%) in the deutetrabenazine group vs 6 (13%) in the placebo group (P = .002). In the deutetrabenazine group, the mean SF-36 physical functioning subscale scores decreased from 47.5 (95% CI, 44.3-50.8) to 47.4 (44.3-50.5), whereas in the placebo group, scores decreased from 43.2 (95% CI, 40.2-46.3) to 39.9 (95% CI, 36.2-43.6), for a treatment benefit of 4.3 (95% CI, 0.4 to 8.3) (P = .03). There was no difference between groups (mean difference of 1.0 unit; 95% CI, –0.3 to 2.3; P = .14), for improvement in the Berg Balance Test, which improved by 2.2 units (95% CI, 1.3-3.1) in the deutetrabenazine group and by 1.3 units (95% CI, 0.4-2.2) in the placebo group. Adverse event rates were similar for deutetrabenazine and placebo, including depression, anxiety, and akathisia. Conclusions and Relevance Among patients with chorea associated with Huntington disease, the use of deutetrabenazine compared with placebo resulted in improved motor signs at 12 weeks. Further research is needed to assess the clinical importance of the effect size and to determine longer-term efficacy and safety
