In this article we analyze the evolution of the business structure of the hospitality sector in Ibiza and Formentera between 1960 and 2000 using the Industrial Economy’s own methods. The first objective is to verify whether oligopolistic structures appeared during this period or whether they have maintained a high level of initial competition. The conclusion is that for the majority of the forty years considered, the sector has grown at an immense rate while maintaining a competitive and open structure.En este artículo se analiza la evolución de la estructura empresarial del sector del alojamiento turístico en Ibiza y Formentera entre los años 1960 y 2000, utilizando el instrumental propio de la Economía Industrial. Purpose – This paper uses the prices of holiday accommodations on large Mediterranean islands specialising in sun and beach tourism to determine their initial state in 2015, their competitiveness and their further evolution until 2019. Methodology/Design/Approach – Following the process of each potential tourist, a total of 21,628 prices were collected from the Internet. Then, the collected data were used in the construction of charts and price indices and the application of a method of cluster analysis (HAC). Findings – Between 2015 and 2019, tourism prices in the Mediterranean region increased sharply. Moreover, the geographic segmentation already observed in 2015 between Western and Eastern Mediterranean destinations intensified. In addition, the paper shows that there is robust demand for sun and beach tourism in island destinations. Originality of the research – Major island markets specialising in sun and beach tourism were used to exclude any interference from professional travellers, people visiting friends or relatives, or tourists willing to bear the cost of travel to less visited destinations

Fractal Geography of a major tourist destination

Ibiza, one the world’s major tourist destinations, necessarily welcomes visitors from multiple family environments and socioeconomic condition. Such multi-faceted demand is met by a broad range of accommodation options, largely varying in type and category. Now, by analyzing the effect of this diversity, we may conclude that the hospitality infrastructure adopts a hierarchical spatial structure, characterized by the presence of a few, large scale sub-destinations of unspecialized nature, very similar indeed to the global destination (self-similar fractal), and of many smaller sites that cater to specific demand segments complementary to the previous ones.Hotels, Geography, fractals, Ibiza

Petróleo: peligro mortal. Unas islas alquitranadas

The goal of this report is to predict what might be the negative effects on the Balearic tourist economy caused by mining oil fields off its coasts. To that end, it evaluates the destructive potential of different types of pedictable spills using data from well-documented spills. The second part of the project considers the effects of different spills that have occurred in tourist areas, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, giving special relevance to phenomena such as a fall in demand caused by a spill that can seriously endanger tourist companies. Afterwards, the report describes the main characteristics of the Balearic tourist economy, highlighting their focus on the "beach and sun" model, and the adoption of an "industrial district" company structure. Finally, the paper synthesizes the description of the potential spills with a description of the structure of the Balearic economy to conclude that a simple mining of oil fields will impose important damages on Balearic tourism and that a large spill can destroy the current complex economic structure, turning it into one that is much simpler in a process that will make the Balearic Archipelago severely poorer

The Crumbling of Francoist Spain’s Isolationism Thanks to Foreign Currency Brought by European Tourists in the Early Years of the Golden Age

    Get PDF
The ‘Golden Age’ refers to an era of rapid economic growth which led to dramatic changes within European society. The steady rise in income coupled with recently introduced paid holidays encouraged the new middle classes to emulate the lifestyle of the glamorous and privileged trendsetters of the Belle Époque and the 1920s. The outward trappings of this included the purchase of a car and annual holidays in the Mediterranean, amounting in the 1950s to a sort of yearly pilgrimage. In the Balearic Islands and the Costa Brava an ample tourist sector flourished against a political background that was essentially in opposition to it – the autarchic stage of the Franco regime. Tourism, in the end, became one of the determining factors which provoked radical changes to this regime, leading eventually to complete abandonment of its militant isolationism

In this piece we present a historic example of a radical two-fold innovation. Since the failure of a groundbreaking corporate business plan, a luxury hotel in Spain in 1903, caused the introduction of a second innovation: tourist packages. We analyze here the novel elements that were derived from the first grand Spanish business plan focused on satisfying the demand for European vacation touris
