Symmetrical Multilevel Diversity Coding and Subset Entropy Inequalities
Symmetrical multilevel diversity coding (SMDC) is a classical model for
coding over distributed storage. In this setting, a simple separate encoding
strategy known as superposition coding was shown to be optimal in terms of
achieving the minimum sum rate (Roche, Yeung, and Hau, 1997) and the entire
admissible rate region (Yeung and Zhang, 1999) of the problem. The proofs
utilized carefully constructed induction arguments, for which the classical
subset entropy inequality of Han (1978) played a key role. This paper includes
two parts. In the first part the existing optimality proofs for classical SMDC
are revisited, with a focus on their connections to subset entropy
inequalities. First, a new sliding-window subset entropy inequality is
introduced and then used to establish the optimality of superposition coding
for achieving the minimum sum rate under a weaker source-reconstruction
requirement. Second, a subset entropy inequality recently proved by Madiman and
Tetali (2010) is used to develop a new structural understanding to the proof of
Yeung and Zhang on the optimality of superposition coding for achieving the
entire admissible rate region. Building on the connections between classical
SMDC and the subset entropy inequalities developed in the first part, in the
second part the optimality of superposition coding is further extended to the
cases where there is either an additional all-access encoder (SMDC-A) or an
additional secrecy constraint (S-SMDC).Comment: 44 pages, 5 figures. Major revision in November 2012. Revised draft

The noise control of minicar body in white based on acoustic panel participation method
It is very important to predict the acoustic radiation of vehicle body for the control of interior noise. Firstly, the kinetic equations of coupled acoustic-structural finite element method are explained and the numerical analytical methods of noise transfer function and acoustic panel participation are further obtained. Then the coupled acoustic-structural finite element model of body in white and passenger compartment cavity of a minicar is established and verified by modal test. The passive side of engine mounting points are chosen as the excitation points, and driver’s right ear is the output point of sound pressure response. The noise transfer function is calculated and the critical frequency of vehicle interior noise is obtained. The acoustic panel participation analysis of vehicle roof and floor are conducted, and the key acoustic panels are identified. In order to reduce the noise of critical frequency, the measures, pasting damping material and welding beam, are adopted. The results indicate that, compared with the results of structure improvement of modal method, the vehicle interior noise is controlled more effectively by using the acoustic panel participation analytical method

Virtual Water Flows Embodied in International and Interprovincial Trade of Yellow River Basin: A Multiregional Input-Output Analysis
With the imminent need of regional environmental protection and sustainable economic development, the concept of virtual water is widely used to solve the problem of regional water shortage. In this paper, nine provinces, namely Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), are taken as the research objects. Through the analysis of input-output tables of 30 provinces in China in 2012, the characteristics of virtual water trade in this region are estimated by using a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. The results show that: (1) The YRB had a net inflow of 17.387 billion m³ of virtual water in 2012. In interprovincial trade, other provinces outside the basin export 21.721 billion m³ of virtual water into the basin. In international trade, the basin exports 4334 million m³ of virtual water to the international market. (2) There are different virtual flow paths in the basin. Shanxi net inputs virtual water by interprovincial trade and international trade, while Gansu and Ningxia net output virtual water by interprovincial trade and international trade. The other six provinces all net output virtual water through international trade, and obtain the net input of virtual water from other provinces outside the basin. (3) From the industrial structure of the provinces in the basin, the provinces with a relatively developed economy, such as Shandong and Shanxi, mostly import virtual water in the agricultural sector, while relatively developing provinces, such as Gansu and Ningxia, mostly import virtual water in the industrial sector. In order to sustain the overall high-quality development of the YRB, we propose the virtual water trade method to quantify the net flow of virtual water in each province and suggest the compensation responsibility of the virtual water net inflow area, and the compensation need of the virtual water net outflow area, in order to achieve efficient water resources utilization

UPLC-MS/MS method for Icariin and metabolites in whole blood of C57 mice: development, validation, and pharmacokinetics study
Icariin, a Chinese medicinal herb with significant effects on Alzheimer’s disease, lacks pharmacokinetic data in mice. To address this, a UPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for quantifying Icariin and its metabolites, Icariside I and Icariside II, in the whole blood of mice. The method processed micro-whole blood from serial collections of the same C57 mouse, with well-fitted linearity (0.25–800 ng mL−1) and intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy within 15%. Short-time and autosampler stability were verified, with acceptable extraction recoveries and matrix effects over 74.55%. After intravenous administration (15 mg kg−1) of Icariin in C57 mice, Icariside I and Icariside II were detected within 2 min. However, after the intragastric administration (30, 90, and 150 mg kg−1) of Icariin in C57 mice, Icariin and Icariside I were not detected, and Icariin was rapidly converted into Icariside II. Furthermore, the Cmax and AUC0-t of three doses (30, 90, and 150 mg kg-1) of Icariside II increased as the dose increased. In conclusion, this method improves the traditional method of collecting only one blood sample from each mouse, detecting Icariin and its metabolites in the whole blood of mice, especially for serial collection of micro-whole blood

Gender-specific association of SLC19A1 and MTHFR genetic polymorphism with oxidative stress biomarkers and plasma folate levels in older adults
Background
Plasma folate levels are closely related to antioxidant capacity and are regulated by folate pathway gene polymorphism. However, few studies have explored the gender-specific association of folate pathway gene polymorphism with oxidative stress biomarkers. The present study was designed to explore the gender-specific independent and combined impacts of solute carrier family 19 member 1 (SLC19A1) and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genetic polymorphisms on oxidative stress biomarkers in older adults.
Methods
A total of 401 subjects were recruited, including 145 males and 256 females. Demographic characteristics of the participants were collected by using a self-administered questionnaire. Fasting venous blood samples were taken for folate pathway gene genotyping, circulating lipids parameters and erythrocyte oxidative stress biomarkers measurement. The difference of genotype distribution and the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated by the Chi-square test. The general linear model was applied to compare the plasma folate levels and erythrocyte oxidative stress biomarkers. Multiple linear regression was used to explore the correlation between genetic risk scores and oxidative stress biomarkers. Logistic regression was used to explore the association of genetic risk scores of folate pathway gene with folate deficiency.
Results
The male subjects have lower plasma folate and HDL-C levels than the female ones, and the male carrying MTHFR rs1801133 (CC) or MTHFR rs2274976 (GA) genotypes have higher erythrocyte SOD activity. The plasma folate levels, erythrocyte SOD and GSH-PX activities were negatively correlated with genetic risk scores in the male subjects. A positive correlation between the genetic risk scores and folate deficiency was observed in the male subjects.
Conclusions
There was association between folate pathway gene polymorphism of Solute Carrier Family 19 Member 1 (SLC19A1) and Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) with erythrocyte SOD and GSH-PX activities, and folate levels in male but not in female aging subjects. Genetic variant of genes involved in folate metabolism has strong impact on plasma folate levels in the male aging subjects. Our data demonstrated that there was a potential interaction of gender and its genetic background in affecting the body's antioxidant capacity and the risk of folate deficiency in aging subjects
Negative pressure irrigation increases vegetable water productivity and nitrogen use efficiency by improving soil water and NO3–-N distributions
peer reviewedNegative pressure irrigation (NPI), which is a new subsurface irrigation technique, promotes vegetable yield, water productivity (WP), and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). However, it is not clear how NPI improves vegetable growth, especially in terms of water supply characteristics and uniformities of soil water and nitrogen. In this study, a cucumber pot experiment that had 0 kPa (PW1), –5 kPa (PW2), –10 kPa (PW3), –15kPa (PW4), and traditional irrigation (PCK) treatments under nitrogen application (N1) and no application (N0) was conducted to reveal the water supply characteristics of NPI and its effect on vegetable growth. There are two main water supply characteristics: 1) automatically supplying irrigation water based on the consumption of soil water, and 2) keeping soil water content stable during the vegetable growth period. In addition, the relationship between vegetable growth and soil water and NO3–-N distribution uniformities throughout the soil profile was investigated by carrying out two tomato field experiments. The treatments of one tomato experiment were NPI with –5 kPa (F1W) and furrow irrigation (F1CK). We also carried out NPI with –5 kPa (F2W), furrow irrigation (F2CK), and drip irrigation (F2D) in another tomato experiment. The results showed that cumulative water application under N1 was higher than under N0 in the PW1, PW2, and PW3 treatments in the cucumber experiment. Volumetric soil water content under the NPI system was more stable during the vegetative growth period than under traditional irrigation. The NPI system also increased yields under appropriate pressures (–10–0 kPa) compared to the PCK treatment in the cucumber experiment. The NPI in the two tomato experiments reduced fertilizer inputs and irrigation compared to furrow irrigation and drip irrigation. However, the irrigation method had no significant influence on the tomato yield in the two tomato experiments. © 2021 Elsevier B.V
