    Plasmonic Tamm states: second enhancement of light inside the plasmonic waveguide

    A type of Tamm states inside metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides is proposed. An impedance based transfer matrix method is adopted to study and optimize it. With the participation of the plasmonic Tamm states, fields could be enhanced twice: the ffirst is due to the coupling between a normal waveguide and a nanoscaled plasmonic waveguide and the second is due to the strong localization and field enhancement of Tamm states. As shown in our 2D coupling configuration, |E|^2 is enhanced up to 1050 times when 1550 nm light is coupled from an 300 nm Si slab waveguide into an 40 nm MIM waveguide.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    The Effect of Online Review Portal Design: The Moderating Role of Explanations for Review Filtering

    The flood of non-constructive and fake online consumer reviews erects a considerable barrier to consumers making efficient decisions. Various review filtering algorithms have been developed to address this challenge, but the design of post-development review portals continues to lack a consensus. In review portals, disclosing more transparent reviews is efficient for enhancing users’ trust. However, it will cause users’ diminished focus on recommended reviews, leading to sub-optimal decisions. A research model is then developed to investigate users’ cognitive processes in their responses to three review exhibition designs (i.e., informed silent display design, filtered review display design, and composite display design) regarding trust in the review portal and perceived decision quality. We also suggest that explanations for review filtering play a moderating role in users’ perceptions, which appears to be a viable resolution to this dilemma. This paper provides significant theoretical and practical insights for the review portal design and implementation

    Carrier Dynamics in Submonolayer InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

    Carrier dynamics of submonolayer (SML) InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) were studied by micro-photoluminecence (MPL), selectively excited photoluminescence (SEPL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL). MPL and SEPL show the coexistence of localized and delocalized states, and different local phonon modes. TRPL reveal shorter recombination lifetimes and longer capture times for the QDs with higher emission energy. This suggests that the smallest SML QDs are formed by perfectly vertically correlated 2D InAs islands, having the highest In content and the lowest emission energy, while a slight deviation from the perfectly vertical correlation produces larger QDs with lower In content and higher emission energy.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Aging, the urban-rural gap and disability trends: 19 years of experience in China - 1987 to 2006

    As the age of a population increases, so too does the rate of disability. In addition, disability is likely to be more common in rural compared with urban areas. The present study aimed to examine the influence of rapid population changes in terms of age and rural/urban residence on the prevalence of disability. Data from the 1987 and 2006 China Sampling Surveys on Disability were used to estimate the impacts of rapid ageing and the widening urban-rural gap on the prevalence of disability. Stratum specific rates of disability were estimated by 5-year age-group and type of residence. The decomposition of rates method was used to calculate the rate difference for each stratum between the two surveys. The crude disability rate increased from 4.89% in 1987 to 6.39% in 2006, a 1.5% increase over the 19 year period. However, after the compositional effects from the overall rates of changing age-structure in 1987 and 2006 were eliminated by standardization, the disability rate in 1987 was 6.13%, which is higher than that in 2006 (5.91%). While in 1987 the excess due to rural residence compared with urban was ,1.0%, this difference increased to .1.5% by 2006, suggesting a widening disparity by type of residence. When rates were decomposed, the bulk of the disability could be attributed to ageing, and very little to rural residence. However, a wider gap in prevalence between rural and urban areas could be observed in some age groups by 2006. The increasing number of elderly disabled persons in China and the widening discrepancy of disability prevalence between urban and rural areas may indicate that the most important priorities for disability prevention in China are to reinforce health promotion in older adults and improve health services in rural communities

    Evaluation on a Personalized Mobile Advertising System: a Comparative Approach

    Along with the high proliferation of mobile phones and other mobile devices, research on the use of short messaging service&#;SMS&#; to access customers through their handheld devices has gained much attention, which is termed as mobile advertising. In order to make the best use of mobile advertising to benefit companies and customers becomes more emergent. One of the most important and successful factor that will bring more positive attitudes towards mobile advertising and induce customers to behave positively is personalization, which has been confirmed in many prior studies. Therefore, it’s necessary and essential for researchers to design an effective system capable of recommending personalized mobile advertising to mobile users. The purpose of this paper is to fulfill this task. We present such a kind of personalized mobile advertising system based on Bayesian Network. Then, we brought out a thorough evaluation of our system in a laboratory environment. Experimental results showed better performance of our system in furnishing personalized mobile advertising than conventional method (random advertising)

    Therapeutic Effect of Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Depressive-Like Behavior, Hyperglycemia and Insulin Receptor Expression in Zucker Fatty Rats

    Depression and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are common comorbid diseases and highly prevalent in the clinical setting with an unclarified mechanism. Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF, fa/fa) rats natively develop T2D with hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. Here we studied whether ZDF rats also innately develop depression, what a correlation is between depression and T2D, whether insulin receptor (IR) expression is involved in, and whether transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) would be beneficial in amelioration of the comorbidity. Six week old male ZDF and Zucker lean (ZL, fa/+) littermates were randomly divided into naïve (ZDF, n = 6; ZL, n = 7) and taVNS (ZDF-taVNS, n = 8; ZL-taVNS, n = 6) groups. Once daily 30 min-taVNS sessions were administrated under anesthesia for 34 consecutive days in taVNS groups. Blood glucose levels were tested weekly, and plasma glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) level and immobility time in forced swimming test were determined on day 35 in all groups. The expression of insulin receptor (IR) in various tissues was also detected by immunostaining and Western blot. We found that naïve ZDF rats developed hyperglycemia steadily. These ZDF rats showed a strong positive correlation between longer immobility time and higher plasma HbAlC level. Long term taVNS treatment simultaneously prevented the development of depression-like behavior and progression of hyperglycemia in ZDF rats. The expression of IR in various tissues of naïve ZDF rats is lower than in naïve ZL and long-term taVNS treated ZDF rats. Collectively, our results indicate that in ZDF rats, i) depression and T2D develop simultaneously, ii) immobility time and HbAlc concentrations are highly and positively correlated, iii) a low expression of IR may be involved in the comorbidity of depression and T2D, and iv) taVNS is antidiabetic and antidepressive possibly through IR expression upregulation

    Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Triggers Melatonin Secretion and Is Antidepressive in Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats

    Decreased circulating melatonin is implicated in depression. We recently found that Zucker diabetic fatty rats (ZDF, fa/fa) develop depression-like behaviors and that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is antidepressive in ZDF rats. Here we studied whether the ZDF rats could be used as a depression rodent model and whether the antidepressive effect of taVNS is mediated through modulation of melatonin secretion. Adult male ZDF and Zucker lean (ZL, fa/+) littermates were used. 30 min-taVNS procedures (2/15 Hz, 2 mA) were administered once daily under anesthesia for 34 consecutive days in pineal intact ZDF (n = 8) and ZL (n = 6) rats, as well as in pinealectomized ZDF rats (n = 8). Forced swimming test (FST) was used to determine depression-like behavior and ELISA to detect plasma melatonin concentration on day 35. We found that naïve ZDF rats had a longer immobility time in FST and that long-term (34 days) taVNS treatment ameliorated the depression-like behavior. In both pineal intact and pinealectomized ZDF rats, taVNS induced acute melatonin secretion, both during and after the taVNS session. A low melatonin level is related to the poor FST performance in ZDF rats (R = −0.544) in contrast to ZL rats (R = 0.247). In conclusion, our results show that ZDF rats are ideal candidates of innate depression and that taVNS is antidepressive through triggering melatonin secretion and increasing its production

    Topologically protected vortex transport via chiral-symmetric disclination

    Vortex phenomena are ubiquitous in nature, from vortices of quantum particles and living cells [1-7], to whirlpools, tornados, and spiral galaxies. Yet, effective control of vortex transport from one place to another at any scale has thus far remained a challenging goal. Here, by use of topological disclination [8,9], we demonstrate a scheme to confine and guide vortices of arbitrary high-order charges10,11. Such guidance demands a double topological protection: a nontrivial winding in momentum space due to chiral symmetry [12,13] and a nontrivial winding in real space arising from collective complex coupling between vortex modes. We unveil a vorticity-coordinated rotational symmetry, which sets up a universal relation between the topological charge of a guided vortex and the order of rotational symmetry of the disclination structure. As an example, we construct a C3-symmetry photonic lattice with a single-core disclination, thereby achieving robust transport of an optical vortex with preserved orbital angular momentum (OAM) that corresponds solely to one excited vortex mode pinned at zero energy. Our work reveals a fundamental interplay of vorticity, disclination and higher-order topological phases14-16, applicable broadly to different fields, promising in particular for OAM-based photonic applications that require vortex guides, fibers [17,18] and lasers [19].Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
