The Study of Risk Assessment of Soil Liquefaction on Land Development and Utilization by GIS in Taiwan
The issue of soil liquefaction has been investigated widely in the past 50 years. However, there is no an integrated method have been considered for the factors between regions’ vulnerability of soil liquefaction and resilience capacity to perform the risk assessment of soil liquefaction hazard. This study selects Yunlin and Chiayi County as a demonstration area, and uses Model Builder of geo-processing models to connect multiple analysis processes, the liquefaction risk distribution in Yun-Chia Plain’s area is carried out in 100 × 100 m grid map scale by GIS. The study results could provide the reference of land development and management in Taiwan
Scheduling irrigation for jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.)
This study was performed to select suitable indicator for scheduling the irrigation of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) grown in the Loess Plateau. The relationships between plant-based indicators and soil matrix potential as well as meteorological factors of jujube under deficit irrigation compared with well irrigation were determined. The results showed that maximum daily trunk shrinkage increased and maximum daily trunk diameter, gas conductance and midday leaf water potential decreased in response to higher and lower soil matrix potential, respectively. However, the maximum daily trunk shrinkage signal intensity to noise ratio was highest in response to higher and lower soil matrix potential. Besides, the maximum daily trunk shrinkage correlated well with reference evapotranspiration and vapor pressure deficit (r2= 0.702 and 0.605 respectively). When the soil water potential was greater than -25kPa or less than –40 kPa, maximum daily trunk shrinkage values showed increasing trend, suggesting that Jujube might be subject to water stress. Based on this, the suitable soil water potential values of pear-jujube in anthesis and setting periods were identified between -40 kPa and - 25 kPa and the values can conduct precise irrigation of jujube in the Loess Plateau. Keywords: Water stress, water status indicators, soil water potential, Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), anthesis, fruit setting periodsAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 9(35), pp. 5694-5703, 30 August, 201
A statistical method for adjusting covariates in linkage analysis with sib pairs
BACKGROUND: We propose a statistical method that includes the use of longitudinal regression models and estimation procedures for adjusting for covariate effects in applying the Haseman-Elston (HE) method for linkage analysis. Our methodology, which uses the covariate adjusted trait, contains three steps: a) modelling the covariate-adjusted population means of quantitative traits through regression; b) estimating the value of covariate-adjusted quantitative traits; and c) evaluating the linkage between the adjusted trait values and the markers based on alleles shared identically by descent. RESULTS: We applied our adjusted HE method and the standard HE method in S.A.G.E. to the sib-pair subset of the Framingham Heart Study distributed by Genetic Analysis Workshop 13 with systolic blood pressure as the quantitative trait. Both methods gave similar patterns for the LOD scores, and exhibited highest multipoint LOD scores near location 70 cM of chromosome 12. CONCLUSION: The adjusted HE method has two major advantages over the standard HE method used in S.A.G.E.: a) it has the capability to handle longitudinal data; b) it provides a more natural approach for adjusting the repeatedly measured covariates from each subject
Mir-23b down-regulates the expression of target gene of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 1a1 and increases the sensitivity of cervical cancer stem cells to cisplatin
Purpose: To study the effect of miR-23b on the expression of the target gene of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1), and cisplatin (CDDP) susceptibility of cervical carcinoma stem cells.
Methods: Human cervical cancer cell line Hela cells were cultured in vitro, and miR-23b mimic and negative control were transfected into the cells using lipofectamine method. The growth of the two groups of cells was determined using growth curve method, and their proliferation measured using plate clone formation. The influence of treatments on the sensitivity of the cells to CDDP was assayed using MTT method. The mRNA expression of ALDH1A1 in Hela cells was assayed using real-time quantitative polymerase hain reation (PCR), while its protein expression was assayed by Western blot.
Results: The levels of expressions of ALDH1A1 protein and mRNA in the miR-23b overexpression group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p < 0.05). The sensitivities of Hela cells to CDDP in the ALDH1A1 inhibition group and the control group were dose-dependent to some extent, but cell inhibition in ALDH1A1 inhibition group markedly increased, relative to control when the CDDP dose was 0.1 ppc (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Up-regulating the expression of miR-23b significantly inhibits the growth and proliferation of cervical cancer cells, and increases their sensitivity to CDDP via down-regulation of the expression of the target gene for ALDH1A1. Therefore, during cervical carcinoma treatment, increasing the level of miR-23b may produce a chemotherapeutic effect.
