    Effects of Cigarette Smoking on Urinary Testosterone Excretion in Men

    Cigarette smoking is a major public health problem that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between cigarette smoking and concentration of testosterone in the urine. Forty young men age between 23 to 31 years were used for this study. The subjects were divided into two groups of 20 controls (noncigarette smoker) and 20 experimental groups (cigarette smoker). 5ml of mid-stream urine was collected from each subject at 0700 hour and urine testosterone concentration was estimated using enzyme immunoassay method. The result showed that the urinary testosterone concentration of non-cigarette smokers was 4.35±0.52 ng/ml, while the concentration in cigarette smokers was 2.81±0.38 ng/ml with

    A seven month study (March-September 2006) on the prevalence of congenital malaria was carried out at the labour unit of three different hospitals within Ilorin metropolis: Eyitayo Hospital, Surulere MedicalHospital and Children Specialist Hospital Centre Gboro Ilorin. A total of 130 blood samples were collected from the mothers and their newborn babies and examined for malaria parasite using both thin and thick films. Maternal packed cell volume (PCV) and genotype was also determined using haematocrit method and cellulose acetate electrophoresis respectively. The prevalence rate of maternal, fetal, placental and cord parasitaemia were 37(28.46%), 29(22.31%), 33(25.38%) and 30(23.08%) respectively.     The effect of aqueous extract of Ocimum gratissimum on hematological parameters of Wister rats was studied. Twenty five rats with weight ranging between 100-160g were used. The rats were divided into five groups; with group one as the control group.     Oxidative stress among subjects with metabolic syndrome in Sokoto, North.Western Nigeria

    Background: Oxidative stress is known to play a role in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome and its components. Racial differences may exist in the level of markers of oxidative stress and antioxidants in patients with metabolic syndrome.Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the oxidative stress and antioxidants status in subjects with metabolic syndrome in Sokoto, North.Western Nigeria.Methods: A cross.sectional community.based study was carried out. Two hundred subjects (96 males and 104 females) were recruited for the study using a multi.stage sampling technique. Demographic data were obtained from the participants. Evaluation of anthropometric variables, blood pressure, blood  glucose levels, lipid profiles, plasma insulin levels, total antioxidant status, and oxidative stress markers was performed.Results: The subjects with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher malondialdehyde as compared to those without metabolic syndrome (236.4 [92.2] vs. 184 [63.2] nmol/l). The antioxidant enzymes  (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase) were significantly lower in subjects with metabolic syndrome than in those without metabolic syndrome (11.3 [4.2] vs. 13.9 [4.1] U/ml, 160[42] vs. 220[32] U/ml, and 2.12 [0.2] vs. 2.42 [0.2] U/ml, respectively). Similarly, the antioxidant Vitamins (A, C, and E) levels were significantly lower in subjects with metabolic syndrome than in those withoutmetabolic syndrome (7.1 [4.1] vs. 7.7 [4.2] µmol/L, 225 [55.3] vs. 227.6 [62.3] µmol/L, and 75.9 [13.9] vs. 82.8 [18.6] mg/dl, respectively). There was a positive correlation between components of metabolic syndrome and free radicals.Conclusion: Significantly increased oxidative stress and diminished antioxidant defenses were found among Nigerians with metabolic syndrome.Key words: Antioxidants, metabolic syndrome, oxidative stres

    Teratogenic effect of isotretinoin on the morphology and palate development in rat fetuses

    The effect of isotretinoin currently used in dermatological treatments was investigated on the morphology and palate development during organogenesis in rat fetuses. This was in an attempt to evaluate the morphological implications associated with isotretinoin consumption. The animals were randomly divided into groups: A, B and C. Group A was further divided into subgroups: A1 and A2 and administered orally with 35 and 70 mg of isotretinoin (dissolved in vegetable oil) per kg of average body weight on day 11 of gestation. The same subdivision and administration goes for groups B and C, but on days 12 and 13, respectively. The control group received an equivalent volume of vegetable oil for each group on gestational days: 11, 12 and 13. After delivery, the fetuses were weighed and studied morphometrically and microscopically. The results revealed that group A had most of the primary palate affected (78.61and 88.89% for subgroups 1 and 2, respectively); group B had most of the secondary palate affected (50.00 and 71.43% for subgroups 1 and 2, respectively) while majority of the fetuses in group C only showed mild malformation both in the primary and secondary palate (28.57 and 35.72% for sub groups 1 and 2, respectively). The data from morphometric parameters showed that the effect of isotretinoin on the fetuses is dose dependent. Isotretinoin should therefore be taking with caution especially by pregnant women during the first and second trimester of pregnancy

    The haematological and biochemical profile of blood of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed on diets  containing watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seedmeal were evaluated using packed cell volume (PCV);  haemoglobin content (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), mean corpuscular  haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), blood glucose, cholesterol, total protein, albumin and globulin as indices. 150 tilapia fingerlings of average  weight 6.12±0.05g were acclimatized for a week, weighed and allotted into five dietary treatments; DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4 and DT5 containing 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% Citrullus lanatus replacement levels with soybean meal, respectively. The diets were isonitrogenous and isolipidic. Each treatment was replicated three times with ten fish per replicate. Fish were fed 5% body weight on two equal proportion per day. The results from the study indicated that there was no significant difference (p&gt;0.05) in the haematological and biochemical parameters of the blood of fish fed on the various dietary treatments.Keywords: Blood biochemistry, Citrullus lanatus, haematology, tilapia, watermelo

    Multiple pathologic fractures secondary to parathyroid adenoma is rarely recognized and reported in the tropics. Inadequate evaluation causes worsened disability and increased psychological stress. We present a 27-year-old Nigerian male student with recurrent unexplained pathological fractures of the long bones. Primary Hyperparathyroidism was later diagnosed and he benefited from a unilateral parathyroidectomy. Primary hyperparathyroidism secondary to parathyroid adenoma is difficult to diagnose and needs a high index of suspicion.     Assessment of a self-reported Drinks Diary for the estimation of drinks intake by care home residents: Fluid Intake Study in the Elderly (FISE)

    Objectives: We evaluated the accuracy of a newly developed self-completed Drinks Diary in care home residents and compared it with direct observation and fluid intake charts. Design: Observational study. Setting: Residential care homes in Norfolk, UK. Participants: 22 elderly people (18 women, mean age 86.6 years SD 8.6, 12 with MMSE scores <27). Measurements: Participants recorded their own drinks intake over 24 hours using the Drinks Diary while care staff used the homes’ usual fluid intake chart to record drinks intake. These records were compared with drinks intake assessed by researcher direct observation (reference method), during waking hours (6am to 10pm), while drinks taken from 10pm to 6am were self-reported and checked with staff. Results: Drinks intake assessed by the Drinks Diary was highly correlated with researcher direct observation (Pearson correlation coefficient r=0.93, p<0.001, mean difference -163ml/day) while few staff-completed fluid charts were returned and correlation was low (r=0.122, p=0.818, mean difference 702ml/day). The Drinks Diary classified 19 of 22 participants correctly as drinking enough or not using both the European Food Safety Authority and US recommendations. Conclusion: The Drinks Diary estimate of drinks intake was comparable with direct observation and more accurate (and reliably completed) than staff records. The Drinks Diary can provide a reliable estimate of drinks intake in elderly care home residents physically and cognitively able to complete it. It may be useful for researchers, care staff and practitioners needing to monitor drinks intake of elderly people, to help them avoid dehydration

In addition, intricate details about disease disparity among diferent human populations are beginning to emerge.     Seminal Fluid Analysis And Biophysical Profile: Findings And Relevance In Infertile Males In Ilorin, Nigeria

    To determine if there was a bearing of body mass index (BMI) on male infertility, a cross-sectional study of males of infertile couples, attending our infertility clinic was carried out. Apart from BMI determination, the semens of these men were analyzed to ascertain their spermogram. Out of 47 men involved in the study, 66% (31) were below 40 years of age. Seventeen (36.2%) of these were between 30-39 years. About 49% of the study subjects had oligospermia, while 23.4% were azoospermic. Those subjects between 30-39 years had the worse spermogram. Thirty-two (68.1%) and 15(31.9%) of the whole population had good spermatozoa motility and morphology respectively. Poor BMI, whether low or elevated, affected the semen quality. In conclusion, infertile males should be encouraged to seek help early. Attending clinician should pay attention to their past or present genital infections and the biophysical parameters. Afr. J.
