    The sustainable potential of efficient air-transportation industry and green innovation in realising environmental sustainability in G7 countries

    Air transportation has a deep impact on environmental degradation due to the higher fossil fuel consumption. On the other hand, this industry also embraces the highest innovation that may alter its environmental consequences. However, there is a dearth of empirical evidence that explores the impact of air transportation and eco-innovation on environmental quality. Therefore, this study is a pioneering attempt to examine the role of air-transportation and eco-innovation in reducing environmental degradation in G7 countries using annual data from 1990 to 2019. In doing so, we employed various advance econometric approaches to handle issues arises from panel data such as Pesaran (2007) and Bai and Carrion-I-Silvestre (2009) used to examine the presence of unit root, cross-sectional dependency checked through Pesaran (2015) test, and for parameters heterogeneity through Pesaran and Yamagata (2008). Moreover, the Westerlund and Edgerton (2008) test and Cross Sectional Augmented ARDL were employed to analyse the long run and short run association among variables. The overall results show that air transportation and eco-innovation play an important role in abating environmental deterioration. Air transportation is negatively correlated with carbon emission and PM2.5 exposure (air quality) due to the improved technical structure of aircraft engines and the use of mixed ration or alternative aviation fuels. These results provide valuable suggestions for all stakeholders

    Bed level changes in the surf zone during post-storm beach recovery

    The study of post-storm beach recovery is important for economic development and the protection of life in coastal areas. In this study, field observations were conducted for 21 days in the surf zone of Dongdao Beach, Hailing Island, China, after tropical storm “Cempaka”. Data on depth, wave, Eulerian velocity, sediment, three-dimensional topography of the beach, and high-frequency variations in bed-level elevation were collected. The results showed that the beach experienced medium- to low- to medium-energy waves during field observations and covered two complete astronomical tide cycles. Contrary to the effect of wave energy conditions on beaches under normal wave conditions, a higher wave energy during beach recovery can promote silting and accelerate beach recovery. Tidal water level is an important factor affecting beach restoration, and a smaller tidal range is conducive to beach accretion. In a mixed semidiurnal tide, beach erosion and accretion occurred in the “highest tide” and “sub-highest tide” tidal cycles, respectively, and the combined effect of the two affected the change in the bed level in a mixed semidiurnal tide. After the storm, the hydrodynamic forcing mechanism and self-organization process of the sand bar jointly drove the formation of the topography of the bar channel in the surf zone. After the storm stopped, the spectral energy in free surface elevation was mainly distributed in the very low frequency and decayed rapidly at the infragravity band. The very low-frequency pulsation of the surf zone during recovery is a prominent feature of bed-level elevation, depth, and velocity. This study provides a good case for the study of hydrodynamic and bed level changes in the post-storm surf zone, as well as a reference for future studies of the intrinsic mechanisms post-storm beach recovery processes around the world

    3, 3′-Diindolylmethane Exhibits Antileukemic Activity In Vitro and In Vivo through a Akt-Dependent Process

    3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM), one of the active products derived from Brassica plants, is a promising antitumor agent. The present study indicated that DIM significantly induced apoptosis in U937 human leukemia cells in dose- and time-dependent manners. These events were also noted in other human leukemia cells (Jurkat and HL-60) and primary human leukemia cells (AML) but not in normal bone marrow mononuclear cells. We also found that DIM-induced lethality is associated with caspases activation, myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) down-regulation, p21cip1/waf1 up-regulation, and Akt inactivation accompanied by c-jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) activation. Enforced activation of Akt by a constitutively active Akt construct prevented DIM-mediated caspase activation, Mcl-1 down-regulation, JNK activation, and apoptosis. Conversely, DIM lethality was potentiated by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Interruption of the JNK pathway by pharmacologic or genetic approaches attenuated DIM-induced caspases activation, Mcl-1 down-regulation, and apoptosis. Lastly, DIM inhibits tumor growth of mouse U937 xenograft, which was related to induction of apoptosis and inactivation of Akt, as well as activation of JNK. Collectively, these findings suggest that DIM induces apoptosis in human leukemia cell lines and primary human leukemia cells, and exhibits antileukemic activity in vivo through Akt inactivation and JNK activation

    Recent studies have shown that microtransplant (MST) could improve outcome of patients with elderly acute myeloid leukemia (EAML). To further standardize the MST therapy and improve outcomes in EAML patients, based on analysis of the literature on MST, especially MST with EAML from January 1st, 2011 to November 30th, 2022, the International Microtransplant Interest Group provides recommendations and considerations for MST in the treatment of EAML. Four major issues related to MST for treating EAML were addressed: therapeutic principle of MST (1), candidates for MST (2), induction chemotherapy regimens (3), and post-remission therapy based on MST (4).
