Adaptation of Authentic Materials in English Listening Comprehension Classes

    Get PDF
This paper examines the notion of authenticity in language teaching. Based on the definition of authenticity and related debates of the notion in the existing literature, this paper illustrates that authentic materials could be used in L2 listening classrooms by material adaptation. An example from a published L2 listening course book in the Chinese context is adopted as an example to illustrate this point. Implications for teaching are also discussed. Language teachers should understand the notion of authenticity, use authentic materials through graded tasks in class, and keep updated with the notion by learning from the existing literature

Role of Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) in Chinese Undergraduate Students’ Comprehension of Textbooks

Vocabulary knowledge has always been considered crucial in reading comprehension. This paper aims to link Chinese learners’ performance on Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) to the profiling of their textbook so as to draw pedagogical implications on English teaching. The participants were 108 freshmen in Jiangsu University of Technology, China. All of them took part in the VLT, and their English textbook was profiled to see the lexical level of the vocabulary. Results showed that 81.48% of the participants had mastered the 2,000-word level, and the vocabulary of the textbook was within the vocabulary knowledge of the participants. However, results also indicated that no participants had reached the mastery level of the K-3, K-5 and AWL words. Based on the findings of the research, it was suggested that the language teacher could make use of the textbook to consolidate the participants’ K-1 to K-2 words and at the same time give them more exposure to K-3 to K5 words as well as academic words by exposing them to some extra materials

The solvability and optimal controls for some fractional impulsive equation

This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of mild solution of some fractional impulsive equations. Firstly, we introduce the fractional calculus, Gronwall inequality, and Leray-Schauder’s fixed point theorem. Secondly with the help of them, the sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of solutions is presented. Finally we give an example to illustrate our main results

AbstractThis paper is concerned with the integral boundary value problems for first order integro-differential equations with impulsive integral conditions. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of extremal solutions

Numerical study of stall inception in a transonic axial compressor rotor based on the throttle model

    Get PDF
The goal of the current paper is to investigate inner flow behavior on stall inception in a transonic compressor rotor. The stall inception process is numerically carried out by unsteady 3-D simulations based on the throttle model. The current study shows that stall starts from the tip of the blade, and stall cell extends to the axial, circumferential and radial directions. Through the comparison of flow transition characteristics at different flow rate conditions, the interface between the incoming flow and tip clearance flow shifts forward to the upstream as the mass flow decreases. Eventually, the shock detaches from the blade leading edge, and tip clearance flow spills into the adjacent blade passage, thus stall happens in the affected blade passages
