    A Corpus-Based Study of Contrastive/Concessive Linking Adverbials in Spoken English of Chinese EFL Learners

    This paper reports a corpus-based study on the usage patterns of contrastive/concessive linking adverbials in Chinese EFL learnersā€™ speech. The results suggest that: a) compared with English native speakers, the Chinese learners tend to significantly underuse contrastive/concessive adverbials in their speech; b) while both the learners and the native speakers rely heavily on a limited set of contrastive/concessive adverbials in their speech, the learners are found to overuse certain adverbials and underuse others; c) the learners prefer to use contrastive/concessive linking adverbials in initial position of a sentence. The factors underlying what is found in learnersā€™ use of contrastive/concessive adverbials are multifold, such as mother tongue influence, teaching instructions, and semantic misuse. Pedagogical implications of the present study are drawn and research suggestions are presented at the end of the paper

    What influences people to choose ridesharing? An overview of the literature

    Ridesharing is a shared mobility service in which passengers and drivers with similar origins and destinations are matched to travel in the same vehicle. This service utilises unused seats in vehicles and multi-passenger rides to reduce the cost of travel. To promote ridesharing, both service providers and policymakers should carefully analyse passenger adoption behaviour to support future decision-making and planning. In this paper, 80 studies on passenger ridesharing behaviour published since 2004 are reviewed. The motivating factors and barriers are analysed and classified in terms of demographic factors, psychological factors, and situational factors, and boundary conditions are included. The work provides a corresponding research framework on ridesharing behaviour. Finally, the current literature gaps are summarised and research recommendations are provided. This study provides a comprehensive and systematic research basis for ridesharing studies, and presents important theoretical and practical contributions to guide sustainable ridesharing behaviour

    Validating quantum-supremacy experiments with exact and fast tensor network contraction

    The quantum circuits that declare quantum supremacy, such as Google Sycamore [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)], raises a paradox in building reliable result references. While simulation on traditional computers seems the sole way to provide reliable verification, the required run time is doomed with an exponentially-increasing compute complexity. To find a way to validate current ``quantum-supremacy" circuits with more than 5050 qubits, we propose a simulation method that exploits the ``classical advantage" (the inherent ``store-and-compute" operation mode of von Neumann machines) of current supercomputers, and computes uncorrelated amplitudes of a random quantum circuit with an optimal reuse of the intermediate results and a minimal memory overhead throughout the process. Such a reuse strategy reduces the original linear scaling of the total compute cost against the number of amplitudes to a sublinear pattern, with greater reduction for more amplitudes. Based on a well-optimized implementation of this method on a new-generation Sunway supercomputer, we directly verify Sycamore by computing three million exact amplitudes for the experimentally generated bitstrings, obtaining an XEB fidelity of 0.191%0.191\% which closely matches the estimated value of 0.224%0.224\%. Our computation scales up to 41,932,80041,932,800 cores with a sustained single-precision performance of 84.884.8 Pflops, which is accomplished within 8.58.5 days. Our method has a far-reaching impact in solving quantum many-body problems, statistical problems as well as combinatorial optimization problems where one often needs to contract many tensor networks which share a significant portion of tensors in common.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, comments are welcome

    Panax Quinquefolium Saponins Attenuate Myocardial Dysfunction Induced by Chronic Ischemia

    Background/Aims: Previous studies in rat models of myocardial ischemia showed that Panax quinquefolium saponins (PQS) could attenuate ischemic/reperfusion injury, increase vessel density and improve cardiac function. In the current study, we examined whether PQS could attenuate myocardial dysfunction in a swine model of chronic myocardial ischemia (CMI). Methods: CMI was established in Bama mini-pigs by placing amroid constrictor on the left anterior descending artery (LAD). Starting from 2 months after the surgery, pigs randomly received PQS (30 mg/kg/day), atorvastatin (1.5 mg/kg/day), or no drug for one month (n=6). A group of pigs receiving sham surgery was included as an additional control. Glucose utilization was assessed with positron emission tomography-computer tomography (PET-CT). Cardiac function was assessed with echocardiography. Myocyte size, nuclear density, and arteriolar density were examined in tissue section obtained from the ischemia area. Potential molecular targets of PQS were identified using proteomic analysis with isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTARQ) and network pharmacology. Results: In comparison to the sham controls, pigs implanted with ameroid constrictor had decreased ventricular wall motion, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and glucose utilization. PQS significantly increased cardiac function and glucose utilization. Arteriole density and myocyte nuclear density were increased. Myocyte diameter was decreased. PQS also attenuated the CMI-induced change of protein expression profile. The effects of atorvastatin were generally similar to that of PQS. However, PQS attenuated the reduction of left ventricular systolic WT induced by CMI more robustly than atorvastatin. Conclusion: The results from the current study supports the use of PQS in patients with coronary artery disease

    Case Studies of Environmental Visualization

    The performance gap between simulation and reality has been identified as a major challenge to achieving sustainability in the Built Environment. While Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) surveys are an integral part of better understanding building performance, and thus addressing this issue, the importance of POE remains relatively unacknowledged within the wider Built Environment community. A possible reason that has been highlighted is that POE survey data is not easily understood and utilizable by non-expert stakeholders, including designers. A potential method by which to address this is the visualization method, which has well established benefits for communication of big datasets. This paper presents two case studies where EnViz (short for ā€œEnvironmental Visualizationā€), a prototype software application developed for research purposes, was utilized and its effectiveness tested via a range of analysis tasks. The results are discussed and compared with those of previous work that utilized variations of the methods presented here. The paper concludes by presenting the lessons drawn from the five-year period of EnViz, emphasizing the potential of environmental visualization for decision support in environmental design and engineering for the built environment, and suggests directions for future development

    Epidemiological investigation and analysis of Clostridium perfringens food poisoning caused by food delivery

    Objective To find out the suspicious food, pathogenic factors and risk factors of a foodborne disease outbreak in a factory, and to discuss the problems exposed in the investigation of the incident, so as to provide reference for the prevention, control and investigation of similar incidents in the future. Methods A case was defined as the onset of abdominal pain or diarrhea (ā‰„3 times/24 hours) or vomiting in a person who worked in M factory from March 3 to March 4 in 2019. Case interviews and retrospective research was carried out using descriptive and analytical epidemics pathological method. Stool specimens of the cases, leftover food and related environmental samples were gathered for pathogen isolation and toxin gene detection using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results 106 cases were identified with a attack rate of 73.6% (106/144). The symptoms were diarrhea (78.3%, 83/106), abdominal cramps (78.3%, 83/106), abdominal gas pains (9.4%, 10/106), and no fever. The epidemic curve showed a point source exposure pattern. The median incubation time was 10 hours (range: 2-22 h). Illness were associated with three food items of the lunch on March 3 in 2019 by univariate analysis and Logistic regression analysis: braised fish pieces [relative risk (RR)=1.55, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.29-1.85], pork stir-fried with garlic sprouts (RR=1.26, 95%CI: 1.01-1.57) and duck blood stir-fried with pickles (RR=1.47, 95%CI: 1.16-1.87). Alpha toxin and enterotoxin CPE genes were positive and beta toxin genes was negative in the Clostridium perfringens strain isolated in anal swabs of three patients, three environmental samples and two leftover food samples. There were possible bacterial contamination and reproduction in the processing and preparation of enterprise D, which delivered food. Conclusion This incident was caused by the food poisoning of Clostridium perfringens caused by the consumption of a meal provided by a catering company. After the meal was delivered, it should be cooled quickly and stored at low temperature. If it cannot be eaten immediately, it should be heated sufficiently before eating

    Evaluation of Proton Therapy Accuracy Using a PMMA Phantom and PET Prediction Module

    Purpose: Positron emission tomography (PET) scanning is a widely used method of proton therapy verification. In this study, a proton radiotherapy accuracy verification process was developed by comparing predicted and measured PET data to verify the correctness of PET prediction and was tested at the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center.Method: Irradiation was performed on a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom. There were two dose groups, to which 2 and 4 Gy doses were delivered, and each dose group had different designed dose depths ranging from 5 to 20 cm. The predicted PET results were obtained using a PET prediction calculation module. The measured data were collected with a PET/computed tomography device. The predicted and measured PET data were normalized to similar PET amplitude values before comparison and were compared using depth and lateral profiles for the position error. The error was evaluated at the position corresponding to 50% of the maximum on the PET curves. The mean and standard deviation were calculated based on the data sampled in the scoring area. Gamma index analysis is also applied in the comparison.Results: In the depth comparison, the 2 and 4 Gy dose cases yielded similar mean depth errors between 1 and āˆ’1 mm, and the deviation was <2 mm. In the lateral comparison, the 2 Gy cases had a mean lateral error around 1 mm, and the 4 Gy cases had a mean lateral error <1 mm, with a standard deviation <1 mm for both the 2 and 4 Gy cases. All the cases have a gamma passing rate over 95%.Conclusion: The comparison of these PMMA phantom cases revealed good agreement between the predicted and measured PET data, with depth and lateral position errors <2 mm in total, considering the uncertainty. The comparison results demonstrate that the PET predictions obtained in PMMA phantom tests for single proton beam therapy verification are reliable and that the research can be extended to verification in human body treatment with further investigation
