A Mobile Geo-Communication Dataset for Physiology-Aware DASH in Rural Ambulance Transport
Use of telecommunication technologies for remote, continuous monitoring of
patients can enhance effectiveness of emergency ambulance care during transport
from rural areas to a regional center hospital. However, the communication
along the various routes in rural areas may have wide bandwidth ranges from 2G
to 4G; some regions may have only lower satellite bandwidth available.
Bandwidth fluctuation together with real-time communication of various clinical
multimedia pose a major challenge during rural patient ambulance transport.;
AB@The availability of a pre-transport route-dependent communication bandwidth
database is an important resource in remote monitoring and clinical multimedia
transmission in rural ambulance transport. Here, we present a geo-communication
dataset from extensive profiling of 4 major US mobile carriers in Illinois,
from the rural location of Hoopeston to the central referral hospital center at
Urbana. In collaboration with Carle Foundation Hospital, we developed a
profiler, and collected various geographical and communication traces for
realistic emergency rural ambulance transport scenarios. Our dataset is to
support our ongoing work of proposing "physiology-aware DASH", which is
particularly useful for adaptive remote monitoring of critically ill patients
in emergency rural ambulance transport. It provides insights on ensuring higher
Quality of Service (QoS) for most critical clinical multimedia in response to
changes in patients' physiological states and bandwidth conditions. Our dataset
is available online for research community.Comment: Proceedings of the 8th ACM on Multimedia Systems Conference

Modeling Nonlinear Vector Time Series Data
In this chapter, we review nonlinear models for vector time series data and develop new nonparametric estimation and inference for them. Vector time series data exist widely in practice. In financial markets, multiple time series are usually correlated. When analyzing several interdependent time series, in general one should consider them as a single vector time series fitted by multivariate models, which provides a useful tool for modeling interdependencies among multiple time series and for simultaneously analyzing feedback and Granger causality effects. Since nonlinear features are widely observed in time series, we consider nonlinear methodology for modeling nonlinear vector time series data, which allows flexibility in the model structure and avoids the curse of dimensionality
Characterization of wave physics using the rigorous Helmholtz decomposition based on the surface integral equation
Helmholtz decomposition (HD) is a fundamental tool of vector calculus and plays an important role in electromagnetics. In this work, arbitrary vector field defined on the open or closed surface is decomposed into the sum of an irrotational (curl-free) vector field and a solenoidal (divergence-free) vector field by using the surface integral equation method. Unlike the popular loop-tree decomposition that is only a quasi-HD suitable for the circuit physics in the low frequency regime, the HD developed in this paper is rigorous and can capture both circuit and wave physics from very low frequency to high frequency regimes. The work could provide insightful physical interpretations for complex electromagnetic phenomena. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Local orbital-angular-momentum dependent surface states with topological protection
Chiral surface states along the zigzag edge of a valley photonic crystal in
the honeycomb lattice are demonstrated. By decomposing the local fields into
orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, we find that the chiral surface states
present OAM-dependent unidirectional propagation characteristics. Particularly,
the propagation directivities of the surface states are quantified by the local
OAM decomposition and are found to depend on the chiralities of both the source
and surface states. These findings allow for the engineering control of the
unidirectional propagation of electromagnetic energy without requiring an
ancillary cladding layer. Furthermore, we examine the propagation of the chiral
surface states against sharp bends. It turns out that although only certain
states successfully pass through the bend, the unidirectional propagation is
well maintained due to the topology of the structure.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
