    Market Manipulation: A Comprehensive Study of Stock Pools

    Using a hand collected new data set, this paper examines in detail a classic account of stock market manipulation—the “stock pools” of the 1920s, which prompted the current anti-manipulation rules in the United States. We examine abnormal turnover and returns and the relationship between them, as well as the long-term performance of the selected stocks. We conclude that the evidence suggests informed trading rather than manipulation. Our findings have implications for regulatory policy as well as the investigation and prosecution of manipulation cases

    Light Multi-segment Activation for Model Compression

    Model compression has become necessary when applying neural networks (NN) into many real application tasks that can accept slightly-reduced model accuracy with strict tolerance to model complexity. Recently, Knowledge Distillation, which distills the knowledge from well-trained and highly complex teacher model into a compact student model, has been widely used for model compression. However, under the strict requirement on the resource cost, it is quite challenging to achieve comparable performance with the teacher model, essentially due to the drastically-reduced expressiveness ability of the compact student model. Inspired by the nature of the expressiveness ability in Neural Networks, we propose to use multi-segment activation, which can significantly improve the expressiveness ability with very little cost, in the compact student model. Specifically, we propose a highly efficient multi-segment activation, called Light Multi-segment Activation (LMA), which can rapidly produce multiple linear regions with very few parameters by leveraging the statistical information. With using LMA, the compact student model is capable of achieving much better performance effectively and efficiently, than the ReLU-equipped one with same model scale. Furthermore, the proposed method is compatible with other model compression techniques, such as quantization, which means they can be used jointly for better compression performance. Experiments on state-of-the-art NN architectures over the real-world tasks demonstrate the effectiveness and extensibility of the LMA

    Psoralen Induced Liver Injury by Attenuating Liver Regenerative Capability

    Psoralen is a major component of the common traditional Chinese medicine Fructus Psoraleae (FP). In this study, we focused on psoralen to explore FP-induced hepatotoxicity and the underlying mechanisms. The acute oral median lethal dose of psoralen in ICR mice was determined to be 1,673 mg/kg. C57BL/6 mice were administered psoralen intragastrically at doses of 400 mg/kg or 800 mg/kg, and were sacrificed 24 h after treatment. Changes in various hepatotoxicity indicators demonstrated that psoralen can cause mild liver injury in mice. Psoralen inhibited the viability of normal human liver L02 cells in vitro by inducing S-phase arrest. In addition, psoralen in both the mouse livers and L02 cells upregulated cyclin E1 and p27 protein levels. The 2/3 partial hepatectomy mouse model was used to further explore the effects of psoralen on the liver regeneration and hepatocellular cycle arrest in vivo. The results showed that the decrease of liver regenerative and self-healing capabilities induced by hepatocellular cycle arrest may play an important role in the hepatotoxicity of psoralen. The further mechanism researches indicated that psoralen-induced hepatotoxicity was associated with inhibition of mTOR signalling pathway and mitochondrial injury; furthermore, MHY, an mTOR activator, partly alleviated the inhibition of mTOR and S-phase cycle arrest induced by psoralen in L02 cells. In conclusion, in this study we showed for the first time, that psoralen significantly induced liver injury in mice; the decrease of liver regenerative and compensatory capabilities induced by hepatocellular cycle arrest may play an important role in the progression of hepatotoxicity associated with the upregulation of cyclin E1 and p27, as well as the inhibition of mTOR signalling and mitochondrial injury. Our findings may contribute to the reduction of hepatotoxicity risk induced by Fructus Psoraleae

    SWOT analysis was adopted to analyze the integrated development of the cinnamon industry in the city of Fangchenggang. The integrated cinnamon industry in the city enjoys great advantages and opportunities, but there are also some problems in its development process, such as the low educational level of cinnamon farmers, weak driving ability and brand influence of leading enterprises, as well as the lack of a strong benefit coupling mechanism. To solve these problems, this paper puts forward several suggestions, such as extending the industrial chain to realize the integration of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries, attaching importance to brand building, optimizing the structure of practitioners, and strengthening the training of cinnamon farmers, optimizing a number of innovative regional enterprises that can lead the development of cinnamon industry and closely connects farmers, and improving the benefit coupling mechanism between farmers and enterprises
