We modified a 2-bend cystotome for continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) in manual or phacoemulsification cataract surgery to improve the safety and ease of performance. A 26G needle was converted into a cystotome with 3 bends. In this retrospective study, the performance of modified 3-bend cystotome was compared with conventional 2-bend cystotome. During cataract surgery, in the 3-bend cystotome group, mean completion time of CCC was shorter, mean times of viscoelastic agent supplement were less, and CCC success rate was higher than that in 2-bend group. Complication incidence, such as postoperative transient corneal edema and irreparable V-shaped tear, was also lower in 3-bend group. No posterior capsular rupture or no other complication was observed in either group. A polymethyl methacrylate intraocular lens or a hydrogel intraocular lens was implanted in the capsular bag in all eyes. We conclude that it is safe and efficient to accomplish a CCC using the 3-bend cystotome due to its ability to sustain the anterior chamber depth (ACD) and keep the posterior lip intact. Using the 3-bend cystotome also allowed for an adequate view into the anterior chamber from lack of wound deformation

Emergent Mott-insulators at non-integer fillings and devil's staircase induced by attractive interaction in many-body polarons

We investigate the ground state properties of an ultracold atom system consisting of many-body polarons, quasiparticles formed by impurity atoms in optical lattices immersing in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We find the nearest-neighbor attractive interaction between polarons can give rise to rich physics that is peculiar to this system. In a relatively shallow optical lattice, the attractive interaction can drive the system being in a self-bound superfluid phase with its particle density distribution manifesting a self-concentrated structure. While in a relatively deep optical lattice, the attractive interaction can drive the system forming the Mott-insulator phase even though the global filling factor is not integer. Interestingly, in the Mott-insulator regime, the system can support a series of different Mott-insulators with their effective density manifesting a devil's staircase structure with respect to the strength of attractive interaction. Detailed estimation on relevant experimental parameters shows that these rich physics can be readily observed in current experimental setups

In the title compound, C18H18O4, the 1,3-dioxane ring adopts a distorted envelope conformation with the C atom common to the cyclohexane ring forming the flap. In the crystal, inversion dimers linked by pairs of C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds occur

There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C15H16O5. In each, the 1,3-dioxane ring is in an envelope conformation with the C atom common to the cyclohexane ring forming the flap. The dihedral angles between the five essentially planar [maximum deviations from the least-squares planes of 0.049 (3) and 0.042 (3) Å] atoms of the 1,3-dioxane ring and the furan ring in the two molecules are 7.15 (1) and 6.80 (1)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds

IntroductionThe postoperative prognosis of peripheral adjacent lobe invasion non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the postoperative prognosis of NSCLC with direct adjacent lobe invasion by comparing it with that of visceral pleural invasion (primary lobe) T2 disease, and parietal pleural invasion T3 disease, and hence determine its most appropriate T category.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted to assess the survival of patients with peripheral direct adjacent lobe invasion NSCLC (group A), and it was compared with that of patients with visceral pleural invasion of the primary lobe (group B) and parietal pleural invasion (group C). All patients were node-negative on pathologic examination. Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare the postoperative survival between groups.ResultsA total of 263 patients were analyzed. The overall survival rates in groups A (n = 28), B (n = 167), and C (n = 68) at 5 years were 40.7, 54.6, and 41.9%, respectively; corresponding median survival in three groups were 53, 71, and 40 months, respectively. The survival difference among three groups was statistically significant (p = 0.031). A similar survival was observed between groups A and C, whereas group B had a much better survival than other groups.ConclusionsPeripheral adjacent lobe invasion NSCLC has a similar survival prognosis with that of parietal pleural invasion T3 disease and hence should be classified as T3 rather than T2. However, further studies are warranted

In the title complex, [La(C5H3N2O2)(C2O4)(H2O)2]n, the LaIII ion is coordinated by one N and three O atoms from two pyrazine-2-carboxylate ligands, by four O atoms from two oxalate ligands and by two O atoms of two water molecules, displaying a distorted bicapped square-antiprismatic geometry. The carboxylate groups of pyrazine-2-carboxylate and oxalate ligands link the lanthanum metal centres, forming layers parallel to (10). The layers are further connected by intermolecular O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding interactions, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular network

OBJECTIVES: to investigate the quality of life and the associated factors on left behind elderly in rural China. METHOD: the research was conducted cluster sampling to select 456 elderly left behind when family members migrated out of rural China to participate in a cross-sectional study by completing a general data questionnaire and Quality of Life questionnaire. RESULTS: 91.5% of the elderly requested psychological counseling and education. For the elderly, scores for mental health (39.56±13.73) were significantly lower compared with Chinese standard data (61.6±13.7) (POBJETIVOS: investigar la calidad de vida y los factores asociados a los adultos mayores que se quedan en las zonas rurales de China.
