Effect modification of environmental factors on influenza-associated mortality: a time-series study in two Chinese cities
Background: Environmental factors have been associated with transmission and survival of influenza viruses but no studies have ever explored the role of environmental factors on severity of influenza infection. Methods: We applied a Poisson regression model to the mortality data of two Chinese metropolitan cities located within the subtropical zone, to calculate the influenza associated excess mortality risks during the periods with different levels of temperature and humidity. Results: The results showed that high absolute humidity (measured by vapor pressure) was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with increased risks of all-cause and cardiorespiratory deaths, but not with increased risks of pneumonia and influenza deaths. The association between absolute humidity and mortality risks was found consistent among the two cities. An increasing pattern of influenza associated mortality risks was also found across the strata of low to high relative humidity, but the results were less consistent for temperature. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for people with chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases to take extra caution against influenza during hot and humid days in the subtropics and tropics. Resveratrol Improves Brain-Gut Axis by Regulation of 5-HT-Dependent Signaling in the Rat Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is at high risk of co-morbid depression and anxiety, which reduces patientsβ quality of life and increases the burden of health care costs. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for IBS still remain unknown. This study investigated the effects of resveratrol on stress-related depression, anxiety, intestinal and visceral dysfunction in rat model of IBS. Rats received chronic acute combining stress (CACS) for 22 days exhibited depression/anxiety-like behavior, visceral hypersensitivity and altered intestinal motility, as measured by the forced swimming, marble bury, abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) and intestinal tract motility (ITM) tests. These abnormalities were accompanied by reduced 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level in the hippocampus and increased 5-HT expression in the gut (ileum and colon) after CACS. Chronic treatment of IBS rats with resveratrol dose-dependently normalized CACS-induced both central nervous and peripheral dysfunction, which were consistent with its differentially regulating 5-HT contents in the brain and intestine. Pretreatment with the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist NAN-190 hydrobromide (NAN-190) prevented such effects. While sub-threshold of 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT potentiated the effects of low dose of resveratrol (10 mg/kg) on CACS-related behavioral abnormalities. Furthermore, resveratrol markedly increased PKA, p-cAMP-response element binding protein (p-CREB) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus of IBS rats, while decreased PKA, pCREB and BDNF levels were found in the ileum and colon. These effects were prevented by NAN-190, which were consistent with the behavioral changes. The present results suggested that resveratrol improved anti-IBS-like effects on depression, anxiety, visceral hypersensitivity and intestinal motility abnormality through regulating 5-HT1A-dependent PKA-CREB-BDNF signaling in the brain-gut axis
Sialic acid profiles in the respiratory tracts of selected species of raptors: evidence for potential binding sites for human and avian influenza A viruses
Abstract Context. The ability of influenza A viruses to recognise and bind to cell surface receptors such as sialic acid linked to galactose by an a2,3 linkage (SAa2,3-gal) and sialic acid linked to galactose by an a2,6 linkage (SAa2,6-gal) is a major determinant of influenza A virus infection. Although the epidemiological surveys of influenza A virus infection in raptors suggest that some raptor species are susceptible to influenza A viruses under natural conditions, the sialic acid profiles in the respiratory and intestinal tracts of raptors are unknown. Aims. To examine the sialic acid receptor profiles in the respiratory tracts of the selected raptor species and assess the potential susceptibility of raptors to avian and human influenza viruses and the role of raptors in the epidemiology and evolution of influenza A viruses. Methods. The lectin immunohistochemistry staining method was used to examine the sialic acid profiles in the respiratory tracts of eight different species of raptors. Key results. A strong staining with Maackia amurensis agglutinin (MAA), specific for sialic acid linked to galactose by an a2,3 linkage (SAa2,3-gal), was observed in the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract of Accipiter nisus and Falco tinnunculus. However, a positive staining for both MAA and Sambucus nigra agglutinin (SNA), specific for sialic acid linked to galactose by an a2,6 linkage (SAa2,6-gal), was detected in the epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract of Accipiter gularis, Buteo buteo, Otus sunia, Bubo bubo and Asio otus, and in the epithelial cells of the alveoli of Buteo buteo, Falco peregrinus, Otus sunia and Bubo bubo. Conclusions. Both avian and human influenza A virus receptors are expressed in six species of raptors examined. There are some variations in the type and distribution of sialic acid receptor expression among different raptor species. No correlation between phylogeny of birds and their sialic acid receptor distributions was observed. Implications. Since SAa2,3-gal and SAa2,6-gal are often considered as the primary receptors for avian influenza A viruses and human influenza A viruses, respectively, our data suggest that raptors could be a potential host for avian and human influenza A viruses
Magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of 23Na40K with 40K
We present measurements of more than 80 magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of ultracold 23Na40K with 40K. We assign quantum numbers to a group of low-field resonances and show that they are probably due to long-range states of the triatomic complex in which the quantum numbers of the separated atom and molecule are approximately preserved. The resonant states are not members of chaotic bath of short-range states. Similar resonances are expected to be a common feature of alkali-metal diatom + atom systems
SP70 is a novel biomarker of hepatocellular carcinoma
BackgroundTumor-specific protein 70 (SP70) was identified as a new biomarker associated with the proliferation and invasion of cancer cells. This study aimed to investigate the expression of SP70 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and assess its clinical value in the diagnosis and prediction of early HCC recurrence.MethodsA total of 1049 subjects from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were recruited in this study. Serum SP70, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and prothrombin induced by vitamin K absence II (PIVKA-II) were measured. The diagnostic performance for HCC was obtained using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was calculated using the KaplanβMeier method. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify predictive factors of RFS.ResultsSP70 was highly expressed in HCC cells and HCC tissue. Serum SP70 levels in the HCC group were significantly higher than in the benign liver diseases group and healthy control group (P<0.001). SP70 combined with AFP showed the best diagnostic performance (AUC=0.909, 95%CI [confidence interval]=0.890β0.929). KaplanβMeier analysis revealed that patients with high SP70 levels had shorter median RFS than those with low SP70 levels (P=0.003). In addition, high SP70 levels were significantly associated with shorter RFS (P=0.037) in the AFP-negative subgroup. Univariate and multivariate analyses confirmed that preoperative serum SP70 level, serum AFP, tumor diameter and microvascular invasion were independent prognostic factors of RFS.ConclusionSP70 is a promising biomarker in diagnosing HCC. High preoperative serum SP70 level is associated with an increased risk of early relapse and could be used as a valuable marker to predict early recurrence of HCC after resection
Experimental Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution Over 1000 km Fiber Distance
Quantum key distribution (QKD) aims to generate secure private keys shared by
two remote parties. With its security being protected by principles of quantum
mechanics, some technology challenges remain towards practical application of
QKD. The major one is the distance limit, which is caused by the fact that a
quantum signal cannot be amplified while the channel loss is exponential with
the distance for photon transmission in optical fiber. Here using the
3-intensity sending-or-not-sending protocol with the
actively-odd-parity-pairing method, we demonstrate a fiber-based twin-field QKD
over 1002 km. In our experiment, we developed a dual-band phase estimation and
ultra-low noise superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors to suppress
the system noise to around 0.02 Hz. The secure key rate is
per pulse through 1002 km fiber in the asymptotic regime, and
per pulse at 952 km considering the finite size effect.
Our work constitutes a critical step towards the future large-scale quantum
network.Comment: 47 pages, 17 figure
