Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation Following Policy Changes: Observations From China.
China's HIV/AIDS treatment policies have been evolving over the preceding decade. This study describes patterns of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation for a sample of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in rural Anhui, China, where most PLHIV were infected via paid plasma donation during the 1990s. A total of 481 PLHIV who were receiving ART were included in our analyses. Times between HIV diagnosis and the initiation of ART were examined relative to the time points when major ART-related policies changed in China. More than half (53%) of PLHIV who had been diagnosed by 2003 received ART within 6 months, whereas 93% of PLHIV who had been diagnosed in 2010 or later received ART within 6 months. The study results provide additional support that the "Four Frees and One Care" policy in 2003 and the relaxation of ART eligibility in 2010 have facilitated the initiation of treatment for PLHIV in China
The Role of Chaos in One-Dimensional Heat Conductivity
We investigate the heat conduction in a quasi 1-D gas model with various
degree of chaos. Our calculations indicate that the heat conductivity
is independent of system size when the chaos of the channel is strong enough.
The different diffusion behaviors for the cases of chaotic and non-chaotic
channels are also studied. The numerical results of divergent exponent
of heat conduction and diffusion exponent are in consistent with the
formula . We explore the temperature profiles numerically and
analytically, which show that the temperature jump is primarily attributed to
superdiffusion for both non-chaotic and chaotic cases, and for the latter case
of superdiffusion the finite-size affects the value of remarkably.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Polyethylenimine-Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Plasmid DNA Gene Delivery
An efficient molecular delivery technique based on the transporting high-molecular-weight PEI 600K-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PEI 600K-MWCNTs) into cell membranes is reported. The PEI 600K-MWCNTs exhibit low cytotoxicity and its associated plasmid DNA (pDNA) is delivered to cells efficiently, and the green fluorescent protein (GFP) levels up to 18 times higher than that of naked DNA were observed
The edge engineering of topological Bi(111) bilayer
A topological insulator is a novel quantum state, characterized by
symmetry-protected non-trivial edge/surface states. Our first-principle
simulations show the significant effects of the chemical decoration on edge
states of topological Bi(111) bilayer nanoribbon, which remove the trivial edge
state and recover the Dirac linear dispersion of topological edge state. By
comparing the edge states with and without chemical decoration, the Bi(111)
bilayer nanoribbon offers a simple system for assessing conductance fluctuation
of edge states. The chemical decoration can also modify the penetration depth
and the spin texture of edge states. A low-energy effective model is proposed
to explain the distinctive spin texture of Bi(111) bilayer nanoribbon, which
breaks the spin-momentum orthogonality along the armchair edge.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Parametric cooling of a degenerate Fermi gas in an optical trap
We demonstrate a novel technique for cooling a degenerate Fermi gas in a
crossed-beam optical dipole trap, where high-energy atoms can be selectively
removed from the trap by modulating the stiffness of the trapping potential
with anharmonic trapping frequencies. We measure the dependence of the cooling
effect on the frequency and amplitude of the parametric modulations. It is
found that the large anharmonicity along the axial trapping potential allows to
generate a degenerate Fermi gas with anisotropic energy distribution, in which
the cloud energy in the axial direction can be reduced to the ground state
value
