    The Dominance of Gamelan in South Korea in a Discursive Perspective

    This article provides a genealogical investigation through a postcolonial perspective about gamelan discourses in South Korea. Gamelan is known as a traditional orchestra representative of Indonesia, especially in academic circles. Whereas Indonesian culture is still not well known in South Korea, Indonesian traditional instruments are not limited to gamelan. There are also a great many other traditional instruments on each island and among different ethnic groups in the nation. How and why has gamelan come to be seen as such a representative Indonesian musical instrument within South Korea? Knowledge of gamelan or Indonesian music is a more recent issue in South Korea where there has been no long history of Indonesian musical discourse. The aim of this article is therefore to understand how gamelan was decontextualized from its origin through orientalism and colonial era research into the performing arts, and how this led to it becoming a representative Indonesian traditional music form in South Korea throughFoucault’s theory of discourse. To do this, historical data was investigated using genealogical methodology. Gamelan was one of the popular objects during the colonial era for Western musicians and musicologists. The popularity of gamelan has been parallel with the development of ethnomusicology, and it has flown into South Korea with increasing Korean students who study in the West and through interactions between musicologists in the ethnomusicology field.     Public Diplomacy Activities of Korean Cultural Center in Contemporary Theory Perspective

    This paper focuses on activities of Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI) through the analysis of Korean government policies regarding public diplomacy by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). KCC is affiliated organization under the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) under Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST). KCC is established in foreign countries to spread Korean culture and enhance national image through political communication with public. Since the beginning, KCCI has shown contradictory tendencies. On one hand, their mission is to show Korea's strength, but on the other hand, they organize cultural exchange programs that imply equality between the Korean side and its partners. By using a public diplomacy 3.0 theory which is based on cosmopolitanism to evaluate KCCI’s practices, this paper finds that practice of public diplomacy by KCCI is still consisted within public diplomacy 2.0 which is focus on enhancement of national image and creation of a favorable diplomatic environment due to holding hegemony in global soft power competition

    Functional Characterization of Siberian Wild Rye Grass \u3cem\u3eEsHSP 16.9\u3c/em\u3e Gene Conferring Diverse Stress Tolerance in Prokaryotic Cells

    Siberian wild rye (Elymus sibiricus L.) is a perennial, caespitose, and self-pollinating grass indigenous to Northern Asia and also is widely distributed from Northern Europe to Japan. The plant shows strong environmental adaptability with tolerance to drought and cold; thus, it is often used as forage resources (Yan et al., 2007). Environmental stresses caused by global warming are acknowledged to be as a serious issue in agriculture due to reductions of crop productivity (Ahuja et al., 2010). Genetic natural breeding of Siberian wild rye would potentially increase the productivity of forage crops; however, genetic studies on this grass have yet to be conducted. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are the well characterized stress inducible proteins playing as molecular chaperones in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We have also identified two differently localized small Hsps: rice chloroplastic and alfalfa mitochondrial Hsps confer tolerance to oxidative and heat stresses in tall fescue and to salinity and arsenic stresses in E. coli, tobacco, and tall fescue, respectively (Lee et al., 2012a; Lee et al., 2012b). Here, we cloned the small Hsp16.9 gene from various heat stress-induced fragments in Siberian wild rye using differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis.     Association of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with subclinical inflammation and 10-year cardiovascular disease risk as determined by Framingham risk scores in Korean male smokers

    Various risk factors and the multifactorial pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been studied. We focused on the interaction between insulin resistance and inflammatory processes. Thus, we analyzed the association of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio with subclinical inflammation and CVD risk in male smokers. We retrospectively reviewed medical records from the Health Promotion Center of Severance Hospital in Korea between 2015 and 2017. Subjects were currently smoking men aged 30 to 59, with leukocyte counts within the normal range, for a total of 1,566. We grouped participants into four groups using the median TG/HDL ratio and the median leukocyte count. The odds ratio (OR) of high Framingham 10-year CVD risk (≥10%) was calculated using multiple logistic regression. The median Framingham 10-year CVD risk increased significantly from Group 1 (low leukocyte count, low TG/HDL ratio) to Group 4 (high leukocyte count, high TG/HDL ratio). The OR for Group 4 was 2.46 compared with Group 1 after adjusting for various CVD risk factors. In subgroup analysis, the OR of the highest leukocyte group was 1.57 compared to the lowest leukocyte group after adjusting for other variables. In conclusion, TG/HDL ratio and subclinical inflammation were positively related to CVD risk in Korean male smokers

    Overexpression of transglutaminase 2 accelerates the erythroid differentiation of human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cell line through PI3K/Akt signaling pathway

    AbstractTransglutaminase 2 (TG2) is a GTP-binding protein with transglutaminase activity. Despite advances in the characterization of TG2 functions and their impact on cellular processes, the role of TG2 in Human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cell line is still poorly understood. To understand the biological significance of TG2 during the differentiation of K562 cells, we established and characterized K562 cells that specifically express TG2. Non-transfected K562 cells showed the increase of membrane-bound-TG2 level after 3 days in the response to Hemin and all trans-retinoic acid (tRA), indicating that membrane recruitment of TG2 is occurred during the erythroid differentiation. However, membrane recruitment of TG2 in TG2-transfected cells revealed within earlier time period, compared with that in vector-transfected cells. The ability of membrane-bound-TG2 to be photoaffinity-labeled with [α-32P]GTP was also increased in TG2-transfected cells. TG2-transfected cells activated Akt phosphorylation and inactivated ERK1/2 phosphorylation, compared with vector-transfected cells. Furthermore, phosphorylation of CREB, one of the Akt substrates, was increased in TG2-transfected cells and this phenomenon was confirmed by RT-PCR analysis of several marker genes related with erythroid lineage in the absence of PI3K specific inhibitor, Wortmannin, indicating that PI3K/Akt signaling pathway also involved in the differentiation of the cell. Finally, as results of benzidine positive staining as well as hemoglobinization analysis, overexpression of TG2 revealed acceleration of the erythroid differentiation of K562 cells. Taken together, there was no increased TG2 expression level in the response of Hemin/tRA and delayed differentiation in vector transfected cells than in TG2-transfected cells, suggesting that suppression of TG2 expression may retard the erythroid differentiation of K562 cells. Therefore, our study may give a new insight for another aspect of the development of this disease

    As increased agricultural insecticide uses and trends in insecticide resistance, increased labor cost to apply insecticide and limited its application to fertility season in green house. There is a need of a safe, labor-saving and confined space application concept to manage control tiny-scale insect pest such as thrips and whitefly. Fumigation with ethyl formate (EF), which is considered as effective to various insect pest and safely use in quarantine treatment, was evaluated in the confined space (glass house) and semi-confined space (vinyl house). The new application technology for application of liquid EF could be the one of the key options for control of tiny flying insects in greenhouses that would save labor and operation costs.     Prevalence of human parechovirus and enterovirus in cerebrospinal fluid samples in children in Jinju, Korea

    PurposeHuman parechovirus (HPeV) and enterovirus (EV) are causative agents of a sepsis-like illness in neonates and of infections of the central nervous system in young children. The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of HPeV3 and EV infection in young children with a sepsis-like illness or with meningitis in Jinju, Korea.MethodsCerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected from 267 patients (age range, 1 day to 5 years) and assessed for HPeV and EV by performing reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. Amplification products of the VP3/VP1 region of HPeV and of the VP1 region of EV were sequenced to identify the virus type.ResultsHPeV and EV were detected in 3.4% and 7.5% of the total CSF samples assessed, respectively. The age distribution of EV-positive patients (median age, 1.4 months) had a significantly broader range than that of HPeV-positive patients (median age, 7.8 months). The peak seasons for HPeV and EV infection were spring and summer, respectively. The clinical symptoms for HPeV and EV infection were similar, and fever was the most common symptom. Pleocytosis was detected in 22.2% of HPeV-positive patients and 35.5% of EV-positive patients. The VP3/VP1 gene sequence of the nine Korean strains clustered most closely with the Japanese strain (AB759202).ConclusionThe data indicate that HPeV infection is predominant in young infants (<6 months) and that meningitis without pleocytosis was caused by both HPeV and EV infection in children

    Pulmonary cryptococcosis is rare in immunocompetent subjects. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old boy who was referred to our pediatric department for the management of multiple consolidations detected on chest radiography, which was routinely performed when the patient was being evaluated for an ankle fracture. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed, and the definitive diagnosis was established as cryptococcal pneumonia.
