    A model of isotope transport in the unsaturated zone, case study

    This work deals with a groundwater flow and solute transport model in the near-surface (predominantly unsaturated) zone. The model is implemented so that it allows simulations of contamination transport from a source located in a geological environment of a rock massif. The groundwater flow model is based on Richards’ equation. Evaporation is computed using the Hamon model. The transport model is able to simulate advection, diffusion, sorption and radioactive decay. Besides the basic model concept, the article also discusses potential cases that could lead to non-physical solutions. On three selected examples, which include, for example, rapidly changing boundary conditions, the article shows the solvability of such cases with the proposed model without unwanted effects, such as negative concentrations or oscillations of solution, that do not correspond to inputs

    Predictors of Enhancing Human Physical Attractiveness: Data from 93 Countries

    People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending \u3e10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. This study provides novel insight into universal beauty-enhancing behaviors by unifying evolutionary theory with several other complementary perspectives

    Práce byla zaměřena na muzea historických vozidel v České republice. V teoretické části byly vysvětleny důležité pojmy motoristického a muzejního sektoru a na jejich základě byla přiblížena významná muzea zaměřená na sektor osobních historických vozidel. Výzkumná část dále rozvedla postoje i fungování zmíněných muzeí v kontextu českého muzejního prostředí a přiblížila problematiku vnímání kategorie youngtimer. Teoretická i výzkumná část práce byly využity jako základ pro ideový projekt muzea zaměřeného na tuto kategorii, který byl zpracován v praktické části.The work focused on museums of historic vehicles in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part, important concepts from the field of motoring and museology were explained. On the basis of these concepts, important Czech museums focused on the sector of passenger historic vehicles were introduced. The research part further elaborated the attitudes and functioning of the mentioned museums in the context of the Czech museum environment and presented the perception of the youngtimer category. The theoretical and research part of the thesis was based on a conceptual project of a museum focused on this category, which was elaborated in the practical part of this thesis

    Contaminant Transport from a Deep Geological Repository: Lumped Parameters Derived from a 3D Hydrogeological Model

    A model of contaminant transport from a repository to the biosphere is one of the major needs in the safety assessment of the geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel. This work deals with the development of a procedure that obtained characteristic data from the transport path by postprocessing the results of the 3D flow and transport models, according to the repository concept for the Czech Republic. Postprocessing was used to map the entire transport pathway, which included the smallest tracer flows; therefore, it is called the “integral method”. The results are the characteristics of the storage system, such as: transport path length, flow time, total dilution, groundwater flow, longitudinal dispersivity, porosity, etc. These acquired characteristics can be used directly in safety analyses or to narrow the selection of candidate sites. Furthermore, these parameters were used to set up a model with lumped parameters (in this case, created in the GoldSim SW environment). Even only one “Pipe” component, after being properly set up, shows almost identical results to the entire 3D model. Based on the results of the 3D model, it is possible to set up a lumped parameter model that accurately simulates the transport path and can perform further calculations of a larger number of contaminants in repeated runs, e.g., with stochastic input data, which would be very laborious (or not possible at all) with the 3D model
