    Minimum Width of Leaky-ReLU Neural Networks for Uniform Universal Approximation

    The study of universal approximation properties (UAP) for neural networks (NN) has a long history. When the network width is unlimited, only a single hidden layer is sufficient for UAP. In contrast, when the depth is unlimited, the width for UAP needs to be not less than the critical width wmin=max(dx,dy)w^*_{\min}=\max(d_x,d_y), where dxd_x and dyd_y are the dimensions of the input and output, respectively. Recently, \cite{cai2022achieve} shows that a leaky-ReLU NN with this critical width can achieve UAP for LpL^p functions on a compact domain KK, \emph{i.e.,} the UAP for Lp(K,Rdy)L^p(K,\mathbb{R}^{d_y}). This paper examines a uniform UAP for the function class C(K,Rdy)C(K,\mathbb{R}^{d_y}) and gives the exact minimum width of the leaky-ReLU NN as wmin=max(dx+1,dy)+1dy=dx+1w_{\min}=\max(d_x+1,d_y)+1_{d_y=d_x+1}, which involves the effects of the output dimensions.     An Experimental and Analytical Study of Ice Part Fabrication with Rapid Freeze Prototyping

    Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) is a new solid freeform fabrication process that builds an ice part by rapidly freezing water layer by layer. In this paper, we will present our recent progress in the development of this novel process. An experimental system has been built for conducting the research. It consists of an XY-table and Z-stroke driven by micro-stepping motors and a water dispensing and deposition subsystem which incorporates a solenoid valve and a syringe pump placed inside a freezer. Simple heat transfer analysis is made to help select proper values of process parameters and predict part building failures. Example ice parts have been successfully built with this process. Key factors of this freeform fabrication process are identified

    Effects of heat treatment on the structure, digestive property, and absorptivity of holoferritin

    Ferritin, as an iron storage protein, has been considered to be a well-utilized iron supplement. However, the typical thermal processing of food rich in ferritin may affect the structure and function of ferritin as an iron supplement. Here, a plant ferritin (soybean seed ferritin, SSF) and an animal ferritin (donkey spleen ferritin, DSF) were used to analyze the changes in fundamental structure and iron content after thermal treatments (68 °C for 30 min, 100 °C for 10 min). Then, SSF and DSF after thermal treatment were administered intragastrically to mice to further evaluate its digestive stability and absorptivity after thermal processing. Results showed the secondary structure, oligomeric states, iron content, and digestive stability of DSF were maintained better than that of SSF after thermal treatments, indicating that DSF has a higher thermostability than SSF. Both SSF and DSF after thermal treatment exhibited higher absorptivity than untreated ferritins. SSF showed higher absorptivity than DSF whether heated or not

    LncRNA TP73-AS1 Promotes Cell Proliferation and Inhibits Cell Apoptosis in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Through Repressing KISS1 Expression and Inactivation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR Signaling Pathway

    Background/Aims: Emerging evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a vital regulatory role in the pathogenesis and progression of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We aim to determine lncRNA profiles in clear cell RCC (ccRCC) and investigate key lncRNAs involved in ccRCC tumorigenesis and progression. Methods: RNA sequencing technique and qPCR were used to determine the candidate lncRNAs in ccRCC tissues. The correlations between lncRNA P73 antisense RNA 1T (TP73-AS1) levels and survival outcomes were analyzed to elucidate its clinical significance. The underlying mechanisms of TP73-AS1 in ccRCC were analyzed through in vitro functional assays. Results: We found TP73-AS1 was upregulated in 40 ccRCC tissues compared with adjacent normal renal tissues and increased TP73-AS1 was correlated to aggressive clinicopathologic features and unfavorable prognosis. Knockdown of TP73-AS1 suppressed cell proliferation, invasion and induced cell apoptosis. We also identified KISS-1 metastasis-suppressor (KISS1) was significantly upregulated in TP73-AS1 knockdown cells. Further, we revealed that TP73-AS1 suppressed KISS1 expression through the interaction with Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and the specific binding to KISS1 gene promoter region. Knockdown of KISS1 partly reversed TP73-AS1 knockdown-induced inhibition of cell proliferation and promotion of apoptosis. We further determined that TP73-AS1 knockdown activated PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, while overexpression of TP73-AS1 induced inhibition of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway and these effects could be partly abolished by overexpression of KISS1. Conclusion: In conclusion, we identified that TP73-AS1 as an oncogenic lncRNA in the development of ccRCC and a potential target for human renal carcinoma treatment

    Increased plasma apoM levels in the patients suffered from hepatocellular carcinoma and other chronic liver diseases

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To determine plasma apolipoprotein M (apoM) levels and other lipid profiles in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients compared to other chronic liver diseases and normal subjects.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>36 HCC, 68 chronic hepatitis, 29 liver cirrhosis patients and 64 normal controls were subjected in the present study. Serum lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoprotein AI (apoAI) and apoB were determined by the conventional methods. Plasma apoM levels were semi-quantitatively determined by both dot-blotting and western blotting analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Serum levels of triglycerides (TG), HDL-cholesterol, apoAI and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) were significantly lower in the HCC patients than in the normal subjects, whereas there were no obvious differences on serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and apoB between HCC patients and normal subjects. However, plasma apoM levels in HCC patients were significantly increased than those in the normal subjects, but lower than those in the chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is concluded that serum TG, apoAI, HDL-C and Lp(a) were significantly decreased in HCC patients than in controls, whereas plasma apoM levels were significantly increased in the HCC patients. Decreased serum TG, apoAI, HDL-C and Lp(a) may reflect the liver damage in HCC patients, whereas the clinical significance of increased plasma apoM levels in relation to HCC is not clear.</p

    Life history traits of low-toxicity alternative bisphenol S on Daphnia magna with short breeding cycles : A multigenerational study

    Due to relatively lower toxicity, bisphenol S (BPS) has become an alternative to previously used bisphenol A. Nevertheless, the occurrence of BPS and its ecological impact have recently attracted increasing attentions because the toxicology effect of BPS with life cycle or multigenerational exposure on aquatic organisms remains questionable. Herein, Daphnia magna (D. magna) multigenerational bioassays spanning four generations (F0–F3) and single-generation recovery (F1 and F3) in clean water were used to investigate the ecotoxicology of variable chronic BPS exposure. For both assays, four kinds of life-history traits (i.e., survival, reproduction, growth and ecological behavior) were examined for each generation. After an 18-day exposure under concentration of 200 μg/L, the survival rate of D. magna was less than 15 % for the F2 generation, whereas all died for the F3 generation. With continuous exposure of four generations of D. magna at environmentally relevant concentrations of BPS (2 μg/L), inhibition of growth and development, prolonged sexual maturity, decreased offspring production and decreased swimming activity were observed for the F3 generation. In particular, it is difficult for D. magna to return to its normal level through a single-generation recovery in clean water in terms of reproductive function, ecological behavior and population health. Hence, multi-generational exposure to low concentrations of BPS can have adverse effects on population health of aquatic organisms with short breeding cycles, highlighting the necessity to assess the ecotoxicology of chronic BPS exposure for public health.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Triptolide (TP) is the major active component of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TWHF) and possesses multiple pharmacological effects. However, hepatotoxicity of TP which is one of the toxic properties slows its progression in clinical application. 18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) is the main bioactive ingredient of Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), a herbal medicine famous for its detoxification. This study aims to investigate whether GA possesses protective effect against TP-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. TP interference markedly elevated serum levels of ALT, AST, and ALP, caused evident liver histopathological changes, and elevated hepatic TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IFN-γ as well as nuclear translocation of NF-κB. TP also significantly elevated liver MDA and declined hepatic activities of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px. Assay of TUNEL and apoptosis proteins (Bax, Bcl-2, and active caspase-3) showed that TP induced severe hepatocellular apoptosis. In contrast, low-dose GA (50 mg/kg) significantly reversed TP-induced changes above. However, high-dose GA (100 mg/kg) had no such effect. Overall, these findings indicated that low-dose GA but not high-dose GA exhibited a protective effect against TP-induced hepatotoxicity in rats by anti-inflammation, antioxidation, and antiapoptosis, which suggests that the doses of GA/Licorice should be carefully considered when used together with TWHF or TWHF preparations

    Check on the features of potted 20-inch PMTs with 1F3 electronics prototype at Pan-Asia

    The Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) is a neutrino project with a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector located at 700-m underground. The large 20-inch PMTs are one of the crucial components of the JUNO experiment aiming to precision neutrino measurements with better than 3% energy resolution at 1 MeV. The excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume provide many exciting opportunities for addressing important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With the container #D at JUNO Pan-Asia PMT testing and potting station, the features of waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs were measured with JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype in waveform and charge, which are valuable for better understanding on the performance of the waterproof potted PMTs and the JUNO 1F3 electronics. In this paper, basic features of JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype run at Pan-Asia will be introduced, followed by an analysis of the waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs and a comparison with the results from commercial electronics used by the container #A and #B
