Salmon mislabeling rates uncovered in restaurants and grocery stores in Seattle

    Get PDF
Salmon has been a cultural icon in Seattle, Washington for many generations because it has and continues to sustain the people who reside on this land. Seafood fraud, in which a seafood’s genetic identity does not match its vendor-claimed identity, is not a new phenomenon, and many studies have been conducted internationally to explore the extent of this issue. With human and environmental health concerns on the line, a salmon fraud (mislabeling) study must be conducted in a state where immensely high salmon sales and serious recreational efforts occur to assess Seattle’s marketplace honesty. By genetically barcoding the highly conserved Cytochrome C Oxidase (COI) mitochondrial gene of 119 salmon samples collected from the 7 congressional districts of Seattle, this study identifies a 17.6% overall salmon mislabeling rate in sushi restaurants and grocery stores. Sushi restaurants substituted wild Pacific salmon for another type of salmon significantly more than grocery stores. The type of mislabeling that tended to occur in grocery stores highlights that perhaps this mislabeling issue could be bringing to light a more systemic substitution problem that occurs higher up on the fish supply chain

This study explored the policies and laws established to govern the process school districts within Missouri use to administer and interpret cognitive assessments, as well as the perceptions of special education administrators and process coordinators. Archival data from DESE as well as from the Missouri Association of School Psychologists were examined to provide supporting information. This analysis was mixed methods in nature while employing a pragmatic approach. The researcher sought to understand the experiences of special education administrators and process coordinators as described by the participants. Both the qualitative and quantitative portions of the findings provided rich and dynamic insight into the participants' perceptions regarding the current assessment practices of Missouri K-12 districts. They also provided cognizance of the qualifications of personnel utilized to administer and interpret cognitive assessments in Missouri K-12 districts as well as how those qualifications compared to established law, policies, and standards. These paralleled need for educational leadership at the state level to provide clarity and communication to Missouri school districts as well as consider measures of accountability, funding, and recruitment.Includes bibliographical references

Joseph Stoll, in Amish and Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History, and Samuel Coon, in The School by the Cornfield, provide two very different perspectives on the struggle to establish Anabaptist schools. The books contrast primarily in their geographic and chronological scope. However, both write about parochial schools with a voice sympathetic to the vision of Amish and Mennonite school founders. They use similar sources, drawing on newspaper accounts, published Amish schools’ histories, and Amish and Mennonite periodicals, as well as personal recollections from individuals involved in school conflicts. Prenatal Diagnosis of Fetal Cystic Hygromas Associated with Generalized Lymphangiectasis

Ultrasonography has made possible the prenatal diagnosis of many congenital fetal abnormalities. This report describes two cases of bilateral cystic hygromas of the neck associated with generalized lymphangiectasis that were diagnosed by ultrasound. Ultrasonic scans revealed moderate polyhydramnios: thick, edematous placenta and edematous fetus with large cystic mass occupying both sides of the neck and extending to the upper chest wall, ascites, and pleural effusion at gestational ages of 21.5 and 24 weeks, respectively. In one case, chromosomal study from amniotic fluid cell culture revealed X chromosome monosomy, often associated with lymphatic anomalies. The prenatal diagnosis was confirmed at birth: both infants delivered prematurely, were stillborn, and showed gross evidence of cystic hygromas of the neck. In this lymphatic defect, chromosomal analysis may be used for the diagnosis and in genetic counseling for subsequent pregnancies

BACKGROUND: The Community Alliance for Research Empowering Social Change (CARES) is an academic–community research partnership designed to train community members on research methods and develop the infrastructure for community-based participatory research (CBPR) to examine and address racial/ethnic health disparities. The Brentwood Community Health Assessment (BCHA) was developed through a CBPR pilot project grant from CARES. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the BCHA is to assess health care utilization and identify existing barriers to health care access among a multi-ethnic community in the Hamlet of Brentwood, New York. METHODS: Using CBPR approaches, the community–academic research partnership develop the study design and survey instrument. Trained Bilingual (English/Spanish) data collectors verbally administered surveys door-to-door to residents of Brentwood from October 2010 to May 2011. Inclusion criteria required participants to be at least 18 years of age and speak either English or Spanish. RESULTS: Overall, 232 residents completed the BCHA; 49% were male, 66% Hispanic, 13% non-Hispanic White, 13% non-Hispanic Black, 29% had less than a high school education, and 33% were born in United States. The assessment results revealed that most residents are able to access health care when needed and the most significant barriers to health care access are insurance and cost. CONCLUSIONS: We describe the community–academic partnered process used to develop and implement the BCHA and report assessment findings; the community-partnered approach improved data collection and allowed access into one of Suffolk County’s most vulnerable communities

    Get PDF
For many piano students, it has always been a challenge to memorize pieces. Most of them would admit to making mistakes and experiencing a mental block during a performance. Difficulty in memorizing may cause difficulty in playing the piano. Though some studies about this case have already been done, this research tried to look for new findings regarding the perceptions of piano students about memorization as a major element for piano performance. The study also described the memorization strategies utilized by the students. Through purposive sampling, ten piano students were selected to participate in this phenomenological study. They were also observed during their piano practices to confirm gathered data from a semi-structured interview. An interview guide was utilized to gather information which was transcribed, categorized, and thematically analyzed. The results revealed that the piano students highly preferred to memorize because it helps boost confidence, focus, and interpret the music well. It was also revealed that during practice, certain memorization strategies such as separation of hands, repetition, singing of the melody, and listening to recordings were used to perform by memory. However, the process of being able to perform by memory takes a lot of hard work and discipline. Therefore, it is recommended for students and teachers to work together in the learning and memorization process
