Prospective impacts of sugarcane burning suppression: the agro-environmental contributions of the Green Protocol to sustainability.
Spitzer observations of the Orion OB1 association: disk census in the low mass stars
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of two fields in the
Orion OB1 association. We report here IRAC/MIPS observations for 115 confirmed
members and 41 photometric candidates of the ~10 Myr 25 Orionis aggregate in
the OB1a subassociation, and 106 confirmed members and 65 photometric
candidates of the 5 Myr region located in the OB1b subassociation. The 25
Orionis aggregate shows a disk frequency of 6% while the field in the OB1b
subassociation shows a disk frequency of 13%. Combining IRAC, MIPS and 2MASS
photometry we place stars bearing disks in several classes: stars with
optically thick disks (class II systems), stars with an inner transitional
disks (transitional disk candidates) and stars with "evolved disks"; the last
exhibit smaller IRAC/MIPS excesses than class II systems. In all, we identify 1
transitional disk candidate in the 25 Orionis aggregate and 3 in the OB1b
field; this represents ~10% of the disk bearing stars, indicating that the
transitional disk phase can be relatively fast. We find that the frequency of
disks is a function of the stellar mass, suggesting a maximum around stars with
spectral type M0. Comparing the infrared excess in the IRAC bands among several
stellar groups we find that inner disk emission decays with stellar age,
showing a correlation with the respective disk frequencies. The disk emission
at the IRAC and MIPS bands in several stellar groups indicates that disk
dissipation takes place faster in the inner region of the disks. Comparison
with models of irradiated accretion disks, computed with several degrees of
settling, suggests that the decrease in the overall accretion rate observed in
young stellar groups is not sufficient to explain the weak disk emission
observed in the IRAC bands for disk bearing stars with ages 5 Myr or older.Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journa
HOW TO START IN BACKSTROKE CONSIDERING THE NEW RULES?
FINA recently changed the rule that governs the starting position for the backstroke starting technique. With this change, swimmers may now decide to start with the feet emerged, which was previously strictly forbidden. This new liberalization naturally determines the rise of a new technical question for swimmers and coaches: do a starting position with the feet emerged allow a better performance, or better performance conditions for the following actions? To our knowledge no previous scientific results are available concerning this question, allowing to support any technical decision. During this presentation we will try to deliver arguments to support a technical option in this particular topic, based on the research developed by our group, comparing the traditional starting technique with the feet immerged (BSFI), with the one allowed nowadays, with both feet totally, or partially, emerged (BSFE). To fulfil this purpose, we studied six experienced male swimmers that maximally performed 4 repetitions of each technique over a distance of 15 meters. All performances were dual-media videotaped (50 Hz) in the sagittal plane, synchronized with kinetic and EMG data simultaneously registered. Kinetic data were assessed using an underwater force plate mounted on a special support on the wall of the pool, allowing the registration of the horizontal component of the forces exerted by the swimmers’ feet. The handgrip system was adapted to reproduce its legal position and configuration, but instrumented with a load cell (Globus, Italy) to allow the assessment of the horizontal component of the forces exerted by swimmers’ upper limbs. Findings pointed out that BSFI was significantly faster till the 5m reference, with less muscular activity, and with a tendency to produce higher forces against the starting wall. No argument was obtained to support the use of the BSFE in swimming competitions
Ionospheric response to the 2009 sudden stratospheric warming over the equatorial, low, and middle latitudes in the South American sector
The present study investigates the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and F-layer response in the Southern Hemisphere equatorial, low, and middle latitudes due to major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event, which took place during January-February 2009 in the Northern Hemisphere. In this study, using 17 ground-based dual frequency GPS stations and two ionosonde stations spanning latitudes from 2.8°N to 53.8°S, longitudes from 36.7°W to 67.8°W over the South American sector, it is observed that the ionosphere was significantly disturbed by the SSW event from the equator to the midlatitudes. During day of year 26 and 27 at 14:00 UT, the TEC was two times larger than that observed during average quiet days. The vertical TEC at all 17 GPS and two ionosonde stations shows significant deviations lasting for several days after the SSW temperature peak. Using one GPS station located at Rio Grande (53.8°S, 67.8°W, midlatitude South America sector), it is reported for the first time that the midlatitude in the Southern Hemisphere was disturbed by the SSW event in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract: The potential risk of nanoproducts is increasingly multifaceted. Screening for the implementation of new tests can follow the decision tree (decision yes/no) considering the previously known information and data from tests about the behavior in the environment, the characteristics and the novelty o f nano- product. The sequence of steps evaluated by the decision tree will depend on the methodology state of the art for risk assessment and the characteristics of each case study
