    A Far-Infrared Survey of Molecular Cloud Cores

    We present a catalogue of molecular cloud cores drawn from high latitude, medium opacity clouds, using the all-sky IRAS Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) images at 60 and 100~μ\mum. The typical column densities of the cores are N(H2)3.8×1021 N(H_2)\sim 3.8 \times 10^{21} cm2^{-2} and the typical volume densities are n(H2)2×103 n(H_2) \sim 2 \times 10^3cm3^{-3}. They are therefore significantly less dense than many other samples obtained in other ways. Those cloud cores with IRAS point sources are seen to be already forming stars, but this is found to be only a small fraction of the total number of cores. The fraction of the cores in the protostellar stage is used to estimate the prestellar timescale - the time until the formation of a hydrostatically supported protostellar object. We argue, on the basis of a comparison with other samples, that a trend exists for the prestellar lifetime of a cloud core to decrease with the mean column density and number density of the core. We compare this with model predictions and show that the data are consistent with star formation regulated by the ionisation fraction.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Bosses were made of fiber/resin composite materials to evaluate their potential in lightweight pressure vessels. An approximate 25% weight savings over the standard aluminum boss was achieved without boss failures during burst tests. Polymer liners and metal liners are used in fiber composite pressure vessels for containment of gases. The internal support of these liners required during the filament winding process has previously been provided by dissolvable salt mandrels. An internal pressurization technique has been developed which allows overwinding the liner without other means of support and without collapse.     High-performance fiber/epoxy composite pressure vessels

    Activities described include: (1) determining the applicability of an ultrahigh-strength graphite fiber to composite pressure vessels; (2) defining the fatigue performance of thin-titanium-lined, high-strength graphite/epoxy pressure vessel; (3) selecting epoxy resin systems suitable for filament winding; (4) studying the fatigue life potential of Kevlar 49/epoxy pressure vessels; and (5) developing polymer liners for composite pressure vessels. Kevlar 49/epoxy and graphite fiber/epoxy pressure vessels, 10.2 cm in diameter, some with aluminum liners and some with alternation layers of rubber and polymer were fabricated. To determine liner performance, vessels were subjected to gas permeation tests, fatigue cycling, and burst tests, measuring composite performance, fatigue life, and leak rates. Both the metal and the rubber/polymer liner performed well. Proportionately larger pressure vessels (20.3 and 38 cm in diameter) were made and subjected to the same tests. In these larger vessels, line leakage problems with both liners developed the causes of the leaks were identified and some solutions to such liner problems are recommended

    The initial conditions of isolated star formation: IV - C18O observations and modelling of the pre-stellar core L1689B

    We present C18O observations of the pre-stellar core L1689B, in the (J=3-2) and (J=2-1) rotational transitions, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. We use a lambda-iteration radiative transfer code to model the data. We adopt a similar form of radial density profile to that which we have found in all pre-stellar cores, with a `flat' inner profile, steepening towards the edge, but we make the gradient of the `flat' region a free parameter. We find that the core is close to virial equilibrium, but there is tentative evidence for core contraction. We allow the temperature to vary with a power-law form and find we can consistently fit all of the CO data with an inverse temperature gradient that is warmer at the edge than the centre. However, when we combine the CO data with the previously published millimetre data we fail to find a simultaneous fit to both data-sets without additionally allowing the CO abundance to decrease towards the centre. This effect has been observed qualitatively many times before, as the CO freezes out onto the dust grains at high densities, but we quantify the effect. Hence we show that the combination of mm/submm continuum and spectral line data is a very powerful method of constraining the physical parameters of cores on the verge of forming stars.Comment: 10 pages.     Youth Program Adult Leader\u27s Directive Assistance and Autonomy Support and Development of Adolescents’ Agency Capacity

    Developing a capacity for exercising agency is an important developmental task of adolescence. Many organized youth programs provide adolescents opportunities to build their capacity to exercise agency. The researchers tested hypotheses that adult youth program leader\u27s directive assistance and autonomy support would promote adolescents’ capacity for agency. They surveyed 441 high school adolescents and 11 adult advisors from 10 Future Farmers of America chapters twice over 2 years. Adolescents self‐reported on their capacity for agency and advisors reported on each adolescent\u27s capacity. Directive assistance and autonomy support correlated with the capacity for agency within both time points. Only autonomy support predicted adolescents’ capacity for agency over time. Implications of leader\u27s support for adolescents’ capacity for exercising agency are discussed

In the chemical field, there is a huge amount of information available in the published literature, the vast majority of which is not available in machine-understandable formats. PatentEye, a prototype system for the extraction and semantification of chemical reactions from the patent literature has been implemented and is discussed. A total of 4444 reactions were extracted from 667 patent documents that comprised 10 weeks' worth of publications from the European Patent Office (EPO), with a precision of 78% and recall of 64% with regards to determining the identity and amount of reactants employed and an accuracy of 92% with regards to product identification. Analytical solutions for the bulk motion were tested by experiments involving material being introduced at a constant volume flux, and a reasonable agreement found between theoretical predictions and laboratory measurements

    Exploring the anthelmintic properties of Australian native shrubs with respect to their potential role in livestock grazing systems

    We measured in vitro anthelmintic activity in extracts from 85 species of Australian native shrub, with a view to identifying species able to provide a degree of worm control in grazing systems. Approximately 40% of the species showed significant activity in inhibiting development of Haemonchus contortus larvae. The most active extracts showed IC50 values of 60–300 mg/ml. Pre-incubation with polyvinylpolypyrrolidine removed the activity from some extracts, implicating tannins as the bioactive agent, while in other cases the pre-incubation had no effect, indicating the presence of other anthelmintic compounds. Plant reproductive maturity (onset of flowering or fruiting) was associated with increasing anthelmintic activity in some species. Variability was observed between plants of the same species growing in different environments, while variation between individual plants of the same species within a single field suggests the existence of distinct chemotypes. Significant activity against adult H. contortus worms in vitro was also demonstrated in a limited number of extracts tested against this life stage. Our study indicates that there is potential for Australian native shrubs to play an anthelmintic role in grazing systems, and highlights some plant biology factors which will need to be considered in order to maximize any anthelmintic effects.A.
