BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and heavy drinking commonly co-occur and can infuence the course of HIV. There have been no interventions designed to address both of these conditions among people living with HIV (PLWH), and none that have used telehealth methods. The purpose of this study was to better understand pain symptoms, patterns of alcohol use, treatment experiences, and technology use among PLWH in order to tailor a telehealth intervention that addresses these conditions SUBJECTS: Ten participants with moderate or greater chronic pain and heavy drinking were recruited from a cohort of patients engaged in HIV-care (Boston Alcohol Research Collaborative on HIV/AIDS Cohort) and from an integrated HIV/primary care clinic at a large urban hospital. METHODS: One-on-one interviews were conducted with participants to understand experiences and treatment of HIV, chronic pain, and alcohol use. Participants’ perceptions of the infuence of alcohol on HIV and chronic pain were explored as was motivation to change drinking. Technology use and treatment preferences were examined in the fnal section of the interview. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and uploaded into NVivo® v12 software for analysis. A codebook was developed based on interviews followed by thematic analysis in which specifc meanings were assigned to codes. RESULTS: A number of themes were identifed that had implications for intervention tailoring including: resilience in coping with HIV; autonomy in health care decision-making; coping with pain, stress, and emotion; understanding treatment rationale; depression and social withdrawal; motives to drink and refrain from drinking; technology use and capacity; and preference for intervention structure and style. Ratings of intervention components indicated that participants viewed each of the proposed intervention content areas as “helpful” to “very helpful”. Videoconferencing was viewed as an acceptable modality for intervention delivery CONCLUSIONS: Results helped specify treatment targets and provided information about how to enhance intervention delivery. The interviews supported the view that videoconferencing is an acceptable telehealth method of addressing chronic pain and heavy drinking among PLWH.UH2 AA026192 - NIAAA NIH HHSPublished versio

    Get PDF
Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to highlight critical issues facing women of color (WOC) faculty and to synthesize the research literature in order to offer recommendations for action to address inequities using an intersectionality framework.Design/methodology/approach–The authors conducted a qualitative meta-analysis. Relevant articles were obtained through a search of the EBSCO and Google Scholar databases entering in combinations of specific keywords. In order to be included in this review, the manuscripts had to be published between the years 2001 and 2017; in a peer-reviewed journal; and available through the university library system.Findings–The majority of manuscripts in the meta-analysis revealed high teaching and service loads, ambiguous standards for tenure, and lack of culturally responsive mentorship are challenges experienced by WOC faculty. Moreover, there is limited research that examines STEM WOC faculty experiences at minority-serving institutions and in leadership roles. Further research is needed to examine the long-term efficacy of mentoring strategies and institutional transformation efforts for WOC. These numerous challenges cumulatively undermine institutions\u27 abilities to implement institutional transformation that impacts WOC in higher education. Originality/value–The recommendations provided are based on the results of the meta-analysis and are intended to promote systemic change for STEM WOC faculty in institutions through intersectional and transformational approaches. An open-source, automated home-cage sipper device for monitoring liquid ingestive behavior in rodents

    Get PDF
Measuring ingestive behavior of liquids in rodents is commonly used in studies of reward, metabolism, and circadian biology. Common approaches for measuring liquid intake in real time include computer-tethered lickometers or video-based systems. Additionally, liquids can be measured or weighed to determine the amount consumed without real-time sensing. Here, we built a photobeam-based sipper device that has the following advantages over traditional methods: (1) it is battery powered and fits in vivarium caging to allow home-cage measurements; (2) it quantifies the intake of two different liquids simultaneously for preference studies; (3) it is low cost and easily constructed, enabling high-throughput experiments; and (4) it is open source so that others can modify it to fit their experimental needs. We validated the performance of this device in three experiments. First, we calibrated our device using time-lapse video-based measurements of liquid intake and correlated sipper interactions with liquid intake. Second, we used the sipper device to measure preference for water versus chocolate milk, demonstrating its utility for two-bottle choice tasks. Third, we integrated the device with fiber photometry, establishing its utility for measuring neural activity in studies of ingestive behavior. This device requires no special equipment or caging, and is small, battery powered, and wireless, allowing it to be placed directly in rodent home cages. The total cost of fabrication is less than $100, and all design files and code are open source. Together, these factors greatly increase scalability and utility for a variety of behavioral neuroscience applications

PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between body composition and strength, balance, and function in people with Parkinson\u27s disease (PD). METHODS: All subjects signed written consent to participate in this IRB approved study. Twelve subjects with PD underwent dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) followed by strength, balance, and functional measures: 1 repetition maximum (RM) leg press, 30 second chair stand (30 CST), the Fullerton Advanced Balance test (FAB), and the MiniBestest (MB) in a randomized order. An independent t-test was used for outcomes between gender. Pearson’s correlation was used to determine a relationship between body composition and all outcome measures. Significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Six men (65.7 ± 5.9), and 6 women (72.7 ± 5.1) were analyzed. There was no significant difference in the MB, FAB, or 30 CST between gender (p = 0.69, p = 0.902, p = 0.361). In men, there was a strong negative correlation between body fat % (BF%) and the MB (-0.926, p = 0.008) and FAB scores (-0.743, p = 0.09). A moderate negative correlation between BF% and TUG (0.428, p = 0.397) and 30 CST (-0.495, p = 0.318). No correlation was found between total lean body mass (LBM) and the MB, TUG, or FAB, but a moderate correlation between LBM and 30 CST (0.253, p = 0.628) was found. In women, there was a moderate negative correlation between BF% and the TUG (-0.479, p = 0.337), and a low negative correlation between BF% and the MB (-0.218, p = 0.678), FAB (-0.246, p = 0.638), and 30 CST (-0.239, p = 0.649). A moderate negative correlation was found between LBM and the TUG (-0.475, p = 0.341), FAB (-0.539, p = 0.27), and 1RM (-0.457, p = 0.362). CONCLUSION: Body fat % in both genders showed negative effects on strength, balance and function, where LBM has mixed results by gender. These findings highlight the importance of body composition in assessing and managing strength, balance, and function in people with PD
