    Terrestrial growth of lead-tin-telluride by techniques related to low G growth

    A modified Bridgman-Stockbarger furnace was constructed for a study of the solidification of silver, germanium and lead-tin-telluride. The melt-solid interface position with respect to the furnace and its temperature profile was determined by measuring the discontinuity in the slope of temperature as a function of position in the melt and in the solid. The results show that the interface position of the semiconductors germanium and lead-tin-telluride was essentially constant with respect to the furnace and hence the growth rate was constant and equal to the sample translation rate of 0.046 cm/min and 0.178 cm/min in each case. The metal, silver, on the other hand showed a continuous interface migration toward the hot zone of the furnace and always exhibited a growth rate which was higher than the ampoule translation rate. The K sub L/K sub S ratio of lead-tin-telluride was determined to be 2.33 + or - 0.06 where K sub L,S denotes the thermal conductivity of the liquid, solid respectively. The value of K sub L was calculated to be about 0.054 Watt 0.1 cm 0.1 K. The diffusion boundary layer thickness was calculated for lead-tin-telluride to be about 0.05 cm using a liquid diffusivity of .00007 sq cm/sec

    Characterization of Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition

    A series of experimental and numerical investigations to develop a more complete understanding of the reactive fluid dynamics of chemical vapor deposition were conducted. In the experimental phases of the effort, a horizontal CVD reactor configuration was used for the growth of InP at UVA and for laser velocimetry measurements of the flow fields in the reactor at LaRC. This horizontal reactor configuration was developed for the growth of III-V semiconductors and has been used by our research group in the past to study the deposition of both GaAs and InP. While the ultimate resolution of many of the heat and mass transport issues will require access to a reduced-gravity environment, the series of groundbased research makes direct contributions to this area while attempting to answer the design questions for future experiments of how low must gravity be reduced and for how long must this gravity level be maintained to make the necessary measurements. It is hoped that the terrestrial experiments will be useful for the design of future microgravity experiments which likely will be designed to employ a core set of measurements for applications in the microgravity environment such as HOLOC, the Fluid Physics/Dynamics Facility, or the Schlieren photography, the Laser Imaging Velocimetry and the Laser Doppler Velocimetry instruments under development for the Advanced Fluids Experiment Module

    Misfit-dislocation generation by dissociated dislocations in quantum-well heterostructures

    The mechanisms whereby 60° misfit dislocations are generated from dissociated threading dislocations in quantum-well heterostructures are considered. The two partial dislocations experience different misfit stresses, resulting in each partial having a different critical thickness. As a consequence, a number of different dislocation configurations are predicted, including the possibility of producing stacking faults of infinite width. © 1994 The American Physical Societ

    Effects of G/A polymorphism, rs266882, in the androgen response element 1 of the PSA gene on prostate cancer risk, survival and circulating PSA levels

    Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protease produced in the prostate that cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 and other proteins. Production is mediated by the androgen receptor (AR) binding to the androgen response elements (ARE) in the promoter region of the PSA gene. Studies of a single nucleotide polymorphism (PSA −158 G/A, rs266882) in ARE1 of the PSA gene have been conflicting for risk of prostate cancer and effect on plasma PSA levels. In this nested case–control analysis of 500 white cases and 676 age- and smoking-matched white controls in the Physicians' Health Study we evaluated the association of rs266882 with risk and survival of prostate cancer and prediagnostic total and free PSA plasma levels, alone or in combination with AR CAG repeats. We used conditional logistic regression, linear regression and Cox regression, and found no significant associations between rs266882 (GG allele vs AA allele) and overall prostate cancer risk (RR=1.21, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.88–1.67) or prostate cancer-specific survival (RR=0.94, 95%CI: 0.56–1.58). Similarly, no associations were found among high grade or advanced stage tumours, or by calendar year of diagnosis. There was no significant association between rs266882 and baseline total or free PSA levels or the AR CAG repeats, nor any interaction associated with prostate cancer risk.     I just want to count them! Considerations when choosing a deer population monitoring method

    Effective management of any population involves decisions based on the levels of abundance at particular points in time. Hence the choice of an appropriate method to estimate abundance is critical. Deer are not native to Australia and are a declared pest in some states where their numbers must be controlled in environmentally sensitive areas. The aim of this research was to help Australian land managers choose between widely used methods to count deer. We compared population estimates or indices from: distance sampling, aerial surveys, spotlight counts, and faecal pellet counts. For each we estimated the labour input, cost, and precision. The coefficient of variation varied with method and time of year from 8.7 to 36.6%. Total labour input per sampling event varied from 11 to 136 h. Total costs of vehicles and equipment per sampling event varied from AU913to913 to 2966. Overall, the spotlight method performed the best at our study site when comparing labour input, total cost and precision. However, choice of the most precise, cost effective method will be site specific and rely on information collected from a pilot study. We provide recommendations to help land managers choose between possible methods in various circumstances
