    Exploiting the open clusters in the Kepler and CoRoT fields

    The open clusters in the Kepler and CoRoT fields potentially provide tight constraints for tests of stellar models and observational methods because they allow a combination of complementary methods. We are in the process of identi- fying and measuring parameters for detached eclipsing binaries (dEBs) in the open clusters in the Kepler and CoRoT fields. We make use of measurements of dEBs in the clusters to test the accuracy of asteroseismic scaling relations for mass. We are able to provide strong indications that the asteroseismic scaling relations over- estimate the stellar mass, but we are not yet able to distinguish between different proposed corrections from the literature. We argue how our ongoing measurements of more dEBs in more clusters, complemented by dEBs in the field, should be able to break the degeneracy.     For at styrke kompetenceniveauet i de maritime erhverv i Danmark er 10 partnere, bestående af relevante uddannelsesinstitutioner og maritime interesseorganisationer, gået sammen om projektet ’Danmarks Maritime Klynge’ (DKMK). Med et særligt fokus på kompetenceudvikling inden for den maritime sektor udvikles og oprettes der i projektet flere maritime uddannelsesforløb i form af fag og kurser på bachelor- og kandidatniveau, der arbejdes på at skabe nemmere afkørsler til kandidatuddannelser for professionsbachelorer, og der udarbejdes relevante maritime efteruddannelsestilbud. Som en indledende del af projektet har projektets partnere via en række analyseaktiviteter set nærmere på, hvilke udfordringer, muligheder og behov de maritime erhverv i Danmark står over for i relation til uddannelse, kompetence og arbejdskraft. Ligeledes er der i inspirationsøjemed blevet set på, hvordan andre førende maritime nationer har valgt at støtte op om udviklingen af deres maritime klynger. Analyserne er foretaget på et overordnet niveau og mere uddannelsesspecifikke analyser vil blive foretaget af de enkelte partnere i den resterende projektperiode

    Establishing the accuracy of asteroseismic mass and radius estimates of giant stars. II. Revised stellar masses and radii for KIC 8430105

    Asteroseismic scaling relations can provide high-precision measurements of mass and radius for red giant (RG) stars displaying solar-like oscillations. Their accuracy can be validated and potentially improved using independent and accurate observations of mass, radius, effective temperature and metallicity. We seek to achieve this using long period SB2 eclipsing binaries hosting oscillating RGs. We explore KIC 8430105, for which a previous study found significant asteroseismic overestimation of mass and radius when compared with eclipsing binary measurements. We measured dynamical masses and radii for both components to be significantly lower than previously established, increasing the discrepancy between asteroseismic and dynamical measurements. Our dynamical measurements of the RG component were compared to corresponding measurements of mass and radius using asteroseismic scaling relations. Uncorrected scaling relations overestimated the mass of the RG by 26%, the radius by 11%, and the average density by 7%, in agreement with studies for other systems. However, using a theoretical correction to Δν\Delta \nu, we managed to obtain an asteroseismic average density that is 1σ1\sigma consistent with our dynamical result. We obtained several measurements of νmax\nu_{max} that are not fully consistent. With νmax=76.78±0.81μ\nu_{max} = 76.78 \pm 0.81\mu Hz, the Δν\Delta \nu correction provided 2σ2 \sigma consistent mass and radius for the giant. The age of the system was estimated to be 3.7±0.43.7 \pm 0.4 Gyr

    What asteroseismology can do for exoplanets

    We describe three useful applications of asteroseismology in the context of exoplanet science: (1) the detailed characterisation of exoplanet host stars; (2) the measurement of stellar inclinations; and (3) the determination of orbital eccentricity from transit duration making use of asteroseismic stellar densities. We do so using the example system Kepler-410 (Van Eylen et al. 2014). This is one of the brightest (V = 9.4) Kepler exoplanet host stars, containing a small (2.8 Rearth) transiting planet in a long orbit (17.8 days), and one or more additional non-transiting planets as indicated by transit timing variations. The validation of Kepler-410 (KOI-42) was complicated due to the presence of a companion star, and the planetary nature of the system was confirmed after analyzing a Spitzer transit observation as well as ground-based follow-up observations.Comment: 4 pages, Proceedings of the CoRoT Symposium 3 / Kepler KASC-7 joint meeting, Toulouse, 7-11 July 2014.     Asteroseismology of the Hyades red giant and planet host epsilon Tauri

    Asteroseismic analysis of solar-like stars allows us to determine physical parameters such as stellar mass, with a higher precision compared to most other methods. Even in a well-studied cluster such as the Hyades, the masses of the red giant stars are not well known, and previous mass estimates are based on model calculations (isochrones). The four known red giants in the Hyades are assumed to be clump (core-helium-burning) stars based on their positions in colour-magnitude diagrams, however asteroseismology offers an opportunity to test this assumption. Using asteroseismic techniques combined with other methods, we aim to derive physical parameters and the evolutionary stage for the planet hosting star epsilon Tau, which is one of the four red giants located in the Hyades. We analysed time-series data from both ground and space to perform the asteroseismic analysis. By combining high signal-to-noise (S/N) radial-velocity data from the ground-based SONG network with continuous space-based data from the revised Kepler mission K2, we derive and characterize 27 individual oscillation modes for epsilon Tau, along with global oscillation parameters such as the large frequency separation and the ratio between the amplitude of the oscillations measured in radial velocity and intensity as a function of frequency. The latter has been measured previously for only two stars, the Sun and Procyon. Combining the seismic analysis with interferometric and spectroscopic measurements, we derive physical parameters for epsilon Tau, and discuss its evolutionary status.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Hippocampal and Hippocampal-Subfield Volumes From Early-Onset Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder to Cognitive Decline

    Background: The hippocampus and its subfields (HippSub) are reported to be diminished in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). We examined these groups vs healthy controls (HC) to reveal HippSub alterations between diseases. Methods: We segmented 3T-MRI T2-weighted hippocampal images of 67 HC, 58 BD, and MDD patients from the AFFDIS study and 137 patients from the DELCODE study assessing cognitive decline, including subjective cognitive decline (SCD), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and AD, via Free Surfer 6.0 to compare volumes across groups. Results: Groups differed significantly in several HippSub volumes, particularly between patients with AD and mood disorders. In comparison to HC, significant lower volumes appear in aMCI and AD groups in specific subfields. Smaller volumes in the left presubiculum are detected in aMCI and AD patients, differing from the BD group. A significant linear regression is seen between left hippocampus volume and duration since the first depressive episode. Conclusions: HippSub volume alterations were observed in AD, but not in early-onset MDD and BD, reinforcing the notion of different neural mechanisms in hippocampal degeneration. Moreover, duration since the first depressive episode was a relevant factor explaining the lower left hippocampal volumes present in groups
