Research and development of an online local foods buying club cooperative
The Iowa Valley Food Cooperative, established in August 2011, achieved its financial and operational goals and is positioned for continued growth. It has been leveraged to provide producer training in beginning farmer business planning, food safety, crop planning, labeling and licensing
Rural Officer Habitus and Attitudes Toward Proposed Changes to Law Enforcement
The field of policing has increasingly come under public scrutiny due to the events surrounding the deaths of citizens at the hands of officers. While this has spurred a call for changes to police training and practices, conspicuously absent from the conversation are the voices of officers themselves. This study addresses this lacuna by examining the attitudes and opinions of rural law enforcement, challenging the notion that the findings of studies concerning urban police can be generalized to rural departments. We argue that opposed to individualistic "rotten apples" theories, rural police behavior is best understood as patterned by the habitus of officers. This study explicates how the field experienced by rural law enforcement interacts with and modifies their response to the hypermasculine training and increasing militarization of American policing to produce an officer habitus distinct from that of their urban counterparts
Ideals with Larger Projective Dimension and Regularity
We define a family of homogeneous ideals with large projective dimension and
regularity relative to the number of generators and their common degree. This
family subsumes and improves upon constructions given in [Cav04] and [McC]. In
particular, we describe a family of three-generated homogeneous ideals in
arbitrary characteristic whose projective dimension grows asymptotically as
sqrt{d}^(sqrt(d) - 1).Comment: 10 pages. This work was completed at the MRC for Commutative Algebra

Changes in the Frequency of Extreme Warm-Season Surface Dewpoints in Northeastern Illinois: Implications for Cooling-System Design and Operation
Warm-season (1 May–30 September) hourly dewpoint data were examined for temporal changes at two weather
stations in northeastern Illinois during a 42-yr period (1959–2000). This area has dense population (greater than
8 million), and shifts to more or less atmospheric moisture have major implications on cooling demands. The
42-yr period was analyzed as two separate arbitrarily chosen equally sized periods, the early (1959–79) and the
later (1980–2000) periods. Analyses of data from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and the Greater
Rockford Airport showed a statistically significant increase in the number of hours with dewpoints greater than
or equal to 248C (an important cooling-plant threshold) in the latter period. Examination of heat-wave periods
indicated that later (especially 1995 and after) heat waves contained many more extreme dewpoint values. These
increases in extreme dewpoint characteristics in northeastern Illinois affect the operation of, and suggest shifts
in design criteria for, air-conditioning systems and affect summer peak electrical loads

Immune complex relay by subcapsular sinus macrophages and noncognate B cells drives antibody affinity maturation.
Subcapsular sinus (SCS) macrophages capture antigens from lymph and present them intact for B cell encounter and follicular delivery. However, the properties of SCS macrophages are poorly defined. Here we show SCS macrophage development depended on lymphotoxin-alpha1beta2, and the cells had low lysosomal enzyme expression and retained opsonized antigens on their surface. Intravital imaging revealed immune complexes moving along macrophage processes into the follicle. Moreover, noncognate B cells relayed antigen opsonized by newly produced antibodies from the subcapsular region to the germinal center, and affinity maturation was impaired when this transport process was disrupted. Thus, we characterize SCS macrophages as specialized antigen-presenting cells functioning at the apex of an antigen transport chain that promotes humoral immunity
Latinos\u27 intergroup contact and prejudice in the United States
Despite being a large and fast-growing ethnic group in the United States, only a small amount of research has focused on intergroup attitudes and prejudice held by Latinos towards other groups. In the intergroup contact literature, the relative lack of research has resulted in a tendency to generalize the experiences of a subset of minority groups to minorities as a whole. The objective of this chapter is to review the existing literature on prejudice held by Latinos towards several groups and to review the role of intergroup contact in reducing prejudice held by Latinos toward outgroups. In particular, we review the literature on Latinos’ prejudice towards Black, Caucasian, and gay and lesbian people, respectively, and the role of intergroup contact in reducing (or potentially increasing) prejudice. We then discuss the role that machismo and ethnic identity may play in increasing or reducing prejudice through intergroup contact. Previous research has suggested that Latinos’ cultural values may play a role in the contact-prejudice relationship, with research demonstrating that machismo is associated with more prejudice towards gays and lesbians. The role of machismo in prejudice towards gays and lesbians is discussed along with the complex role that ethnic identity plays in prejudice held by Latinos towards outgroups. Potential areas of future research are identified
Wave Energy Converter Effects on the Nearshore Environment
This poster presents efforts to use predictive modeling tools to evaluate the impacts of Wave Energy Converter (WEC) arrays on nearshore processes, investigate effects of different WEC devices on wave propagation, examine wave propagation in the lee of a WEC array over different wave conditions, and accelerate the realization of commercial-scale wave power
Planning grant for the establishment of a food enterprise center
An assessment of community resources to support the development of a food enterprise center (FEC) or food hub was completed through planning meetings with community stakeholders. Local farmers and food businesses were surveyed and interviewed to determine their interest in the services of a food hub and FEC
