Evaluation of physicochemical and glycaemic properties of commercial plant-based milk substitutes
The market for plant-based dairy-type products is growing as consumers replace bovine milk in their diet, for medical reasons or as a lifestyle choice. A screening of 17 different commercial plant-based milk substitutes based on different cereals, nuts and legumes was performed, including the evaluation of physicochemical and glycaemic properties. Half of the analysed samples had low or no protein contents (<0.5 %). Only samples based on soya showed considerable high protein contents, matching the value of cow's milk (3.7 %). An in-vitro method was used to predict the glycaemic index. In general, the glycaemic index values ranged from 47 for bovine milk to 64 (almond-based) and up to 100 for rice-based samples. Most of the plant-based milk substitutes were highly unstable with separation rates up to 54.39 %/h. This study demonstrated that nutritional and physicochemical properties of plant-based milk substitutes are strongly dependent on the plant source, processing and fortification. Most products showed low nutritional qualities. Therefore, consumer awareness is important when plant-based milk substitutes are used as an alternative to cow's milk in the diet
Stereoisomer libraries: Total synthesis of all 16 stereoisomers of the pine sawfly sex pheromone by a fluorous mixture-synthesis approach
All 16 stereoisomers of the sex pheromone of pine sawfly (3,7,11-trimethylundecanol propanoate ester) have been synthesized on a 10- to 20-mg scale by a split-parallel fluorous mixture-synthesis approach. Spectral data obtained for all 32 compounds (16 alcohols and the corresponding propionates) matched well with published data, thereby validating the fluorous-tag encoding of diastereoisomers. This fluorous-tag encoding method is recommended for the efficient synthesis of multiple stereoisomers for spectroscopic studies, biological tests, or other structure-function relationships
Using social media content for screening in recruitment and selection: pros and cons
The article considers the arguments that have been made in defence of social media screening as well as issues that arise and may effectively erode the reliability and utility of such data for employers. First, the authors consider existing legal frameworks and guidelines that exist in the UK and the USA, as well as the subsequent ethical concerns that arise when employers access and use social networking content for employment purposes. Second, several arguments in favour of the use of social networking content are made, each of which is considered from several angles, including concerns about impression management, bias and discrimination, data protection and security. Ultimately, the current state of knowledge does not provide a definite answer as to whether information from social networks is helpful in recruitment and selection
Measurement-Based Identification of Lumped Parameter Thermal Networks for sub-Kw Outer Rotor PM Machines
This work is on deriving precise lumped parameter thermal networks for modeling the transient thermal characteristics of electric machines under variable load conditions. The goal is to facilitate an accurate estimation of the temperatures of critical machines' components and to allow for running the derived model in real time to adapt the motor control based on the load history and maximum permissible temperatures. Consequently, the machine's capabilities can be exhausted at best considering a highly-utilized drive. The model shall be as simple as possible without sacrificing the exactness of the predicted temperatures. Accordingly, a specific lumped parameter thermal network topology was selected and its characteristics are explained in detail. The measurement data based optimization of its critical parameters through an evolutionary optimization strategy, and the therefore utilized experimental setup will be described in detail here. Measurement cycles were recorded for modeling and verification purposes including both static and dynamic test cycles with changing load torque and speed requirements. Applying the proposed hybrid approach for determining the model's parameters through involving physics-based equations as well as numerical optimization followed a significant improvement of the preciseness of the predicted motor temperatures compared to solely determining the networks's coefficients based on expert knowledge. Thereby, the validation included both the original measurement data as well as extra measurement runs. The proposed and applied strategy provides an excellent basis for future thermal modeling of electric machines
Age-related changes in T lymphocytes of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Introduction
The number of aging cancer patients has increased continuously and will do so further in the future. The immune system of elderly people experiences critical changes over the time. Therefore, tumor-induced changes in the immune system are believed to differ in young and elderly cancer patients as well.
Methods
The effect of aging on the immune system was measured in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of healthy volunteers (n = 48, 21–84 yrs.) divided into three different age groups. Seventy years was set as a cut-off for defining subjects as elderly. Results were compared to two groups of adult cancer patients, which donated PBL and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL): young cancer patients (40–69 yrs.; blood: n = 13; TIL: n = 17) and elderly cancer patients (70–90 yrs.; blood: n = 20; TIL: n = 15) with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Frequencies and phenotypes of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells as well as regulatory T cells (Treg) were assessed by flow cytometry.
Results
We observed lower frequencies of CD8+ cytotoxic T cells during aging in both groups. Frequencies of tumor infiltrating regulatory T cells were significantly higher than in the peripheral blood but showed a significant decline in older tumor patients. With increasing age, expression of immunosuppressive CD73 and CCR7 was lower and expression of PD1 elevated on peripheral T cells in healthy volunteers and tumor patients.
Conclusion
Immunosenescence takes place in healthy donors and cancer patients. Our results suggest that in elderly tumor patients, the immune system is impaired and the tumor-induced immune escape is less pronounced. The increased expression of PD1 implies the potential for effective immunotherapies in elderly, as treatment with checkpoint inhibitors could be more beneficial for elderly HNSCC patients
Virtuality at work and social media use among dispersed workers: promoting network ties, shared vision and trust
Purpose: Technology and globalization of services have facilitated the digitalization of many processes at work. However, their impact on social capital is unknown. Thus, the goal of the current study was to examine the relationships between virtuality in the workplace and social capital. Design: Using an online survey, we recruited 152 female student workers using an opportunity sampling approach. Findings: Participants who used social media at work (n = 112) reported higher social capital overall than participants who did not use any social media to communicate with colleagues at work (n = 40). This difference also presented itself in terms of the social capital subscales (network ties, shared vision, and trust). Mediation analysis conducted with users of social media at work (n = 112) revealed that social media use was a significant mediator in the relationship between virtuality at work and social capital overall (partial mediation). Subsequent analyses with the subscales for virtuality and social capital suggested full mediation of the relationship in most instances (with the exception of work practices). Originality/value: This is the first study to examine the relationship between virtuality, social media, and social capital at work. The result of this study suggests that social media use at work between colleagues can play a significant role in promoting social capital in workplaces that are heavily reliant on technological application to support interactions at work and feature geographical and temporal dispersion
Perceived interviewee anxiety and performance in telephone interviews
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to focus on the role of interviewee anxiety as a predictor of perceived hireability (Study 1, n=82) and job suitability (Study 2, n=74). Design/methodology/approach Using an experimental design, participants were randomly allocated to one of two conditions (an audio recording of either a confident or anxious job candidate with identical scripts) and asked to take the role of an interviewer. Findings: The anxious interviewee (played by an actor) was consistently rated as less hireable (in a combined sample based on Studies and 2), less suitable to the job and received less favorable hiring recommendations (as assessed in Study 2) than the confident interviewee (played by the same actor). Research limitations/implications: The study was conducted with students who may have less interview experience than experienced interviewers. Practical implications: The results suggest that anxiety has a negative biasing effect on perceived hireability and job suitability ratings. In other words, the behavioral manipulation of anxiety affects hireability ratings, independent of any subjective assessment of anxiety. Originality/value: The findings provide evidence of an anxiety bias in telephone interview settings. The results highlight the importance of considering anxiety cues when training employment interviewers
