Sorting Phenomena and Chirality Transfer in Fluoride-Bridged Macrocyclic Rare Earth Complexes
The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear lanthanide(III) and yttrium(III) hexaaza-macrocyclic complexes results in the formation of dinuclear fluoride-bridged complexes. As indicated by X-ray crystal structures, in these complexes two metal ions bound by the macrocycles are linked by two or three bridging fluoride anions, depending on the type of the macrocycle. In the case of the chiral hexaaza-macrocycle L1 derived from trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, the formation of these μ2-fluorido dinuclear complexes is accompanied by enantiomeric self-recognition of macrocyclic units. In contrast, this kind of recognition is not observed in the case of complexes of the chiral macrocycle L2 derived from 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The reaction of fluoride with a mixture of mononuclear complexes of L1 and L2, containing two different Ln(III) ions, results in narcissistic sorting of macrocyclic units. Conversely, a similar reaction involving mononuclear complexes of L1 and complexes of achiral macrocycle L3 based on ethylenediamine results in sociable sorting of macrocyclic units and preferable formation of heterodinuclear complexes. In addition, formation of these heterodinuclear complexes is accompanied by chirality transfer from the chiral macrocycle L1 to the achiral macrocycle L3 as indicated by CPL and CD spectra
Assessment of the intima-media thickness and pulse-wave velocity in peripheral arteries in patients with angiographically confirmed coronary artery disease
Background: Non-invasive methods of assessment of the vascular wall have become of significant
interest in recent years. They allow better prediction of cardiovascular lesions when combined
with evaluation of established cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the study was to evaluate
whether the combination of ultrasonographic assessment of intima-media thickness (IMT) and
pulse-wave velocity (PWV) measurement in peripheral arteries results in an increased predictive
value for the presence of atherosclerotic coronary lesions. In addition, selected established risk
factors for atherosclerosis were analysed for their association with IMT and PWV.
Methods: Fifty patients with angiographically confirmed coronary artery disease were included
in the study. In all patients ultrasonographic assessment of IMT was performed in the common
carotid artery (CCA), the carotid artery bulb (CB) and the common femoral artery (CFA).
Simultaneously PWV was recorded between CCA and the brachial and femoral arteries.
Results: A higher IMT was noted both in CB and CFA as compared to CCA. Carotid-brachial PWV was higher compared to carotid-femoral PWV. Carotid-femoral PWV correlated
with IMT (p = 0.015) and the presence of atherosclerotic plaques (p = 0.04) in CB. No similar
relation was found for carotid-brachial PWV. IMT in CCA, CB, and CFA was significantly
higher in subjects with triple-vessel disease compared to patients with single-vessel or doublevessel
disease. We also found a trend for higher PWV values in patients with multivessel
disease but these differences did not reach statistical significance.
Conclusions: Combining ultrasonographic assessment of IMT and PWV measurements in
peripheral arteries results in an increased predictive value for the presence of atherosclerotic
coronary lesions. Isolated PWV measurements are less useful for non-invasive coronary risk
assessment than IMT measurements
Trinuclear Cage-Like ZnII Macrocyclic Complexes: Enantiomeric Recognition and Gas Adsorption Properties
Three zinc(II) ions in combination with two units of enantiopure 3+3 triphenolic Schiff base macrocycles 1, 2, 3 or 4 form cage-like chiral complexes. The formation of these complexes is accompanied by the enantioselective self-recognition of chiral macrocyclic units. The X-ray crystal structures of these trinuclear complexes show hollow metal-organic molecules. In some crystal forms, these barrel-shaped complexes are arranged in a window-to-window fashion which results in formation of 1-D channels and combination of intrinsic porosity with extrinsic porosity. The microporous nature of the [Zn312] complex is reflected in its N2, Ar, H2 and CO2 adsorption properties. The N2 and Ar adsorption isotherms showed pressure gating behaviour which is without precedent for any noncovalent porous material. The comparison of the structures of the [Zn312] and [Zn332] complexes with that of the free macrocycle H31 reveals a striking structural similarity. In the latter compound two macrocyclic units stitched together by hydrogen bonds form a cage very similar to that formed by two macrocyclic units stitched together by Zn(II) ions. This structural similarity is manifested also by the gas adsorption properties of the free H31 macrocycle. Recrystallization of [Zn312] in the presence of racemic 2-butanol results in enantioselective binding of the (S)-2-butanol inside the cage via coordination to one of Zn(II) ions. This work was supported by the NCN (NarodoweCentrumNauki, Poland) (grant 2011/03/B/ST5/01060).D.P.and J.L.thank the FNP Program“Mistrz” for financial support, and D.F.-J. thanks the Royal Society for funding through a University Research Fellowship. This is the author accepted manuscript. The influence of renal function and selected cardiovascular risk factors on the thickness of the intima-media complex in the peripheral arteries
Background: Measurement of the intima-media thickness (IMT) in the peripheral arteries
leads to better stratification of cardiovascular risk. This is of great importance in patients with
chronic renal insufficiency, who are particularly vulnerable to developing atherosclerotic lesions.
The aim of the study was to evaluate whether parameters of renal insufficiency and
selected risk factors of atherosclerosis influence IMT in the peripheral arteries.
Methods: The study population comprised 231 patients submitted to coronary angiography
with ultrasonographic assessment of the common carotid artery (CCA), carotid artery bulb
(CB) and common femoral artery (CFA) made contemporaneously with evaluation of IMT
and atherosclerotic plaques. Renal function as well as selected clinical and biochemical risk
factors of atherosclerosis were assessed. Two subgroups were analysed: 200 patients with
coronary heart disease confirmed angiographically (study group) and 31 patients without
coronary lesions (control group).
Results: Significant negative correlation was found between glomerular filtration rate and
IMT values in CCA (p < 0.001) as well as in CB (p < 0.05). Patients with abnormal glucose
metabolism had significantly higher IMT values in CCA (0.95 ± 0.30 vs. 0.87 ± 0.20;
p = 0.034). Hypercholesterolaemia did not influence the IMT values in CCA and CFA. There was
no correlation between body mass index and IMT.
Conclusions: Patients with chronic renal insufficiency presented higher values of IMT in
CCA. The measurement of IMT appears to be a valuable non-invasive method of diagnosing
preclinical stages of atherosclerosis in the described group of patients. (Cardiol J 2007; 14: 59–66
Ocena kompleksu błona wewnętrzna-błona środkowa i prędkości fali tętna w tętnicach obwodowych u pacjentów z koronarograficznie potwierdzoną chorobą wieńcową
Wstęp: Nieinwazyjne metody badania stanu naczyń tętniczych wzbudzają coraz większe
zainteresowanie.
Metody: Badaniem objęto 50 chorych z chorobą wieńcową zweryfikowaną koronarograficznie;
Zaobserwowano też tendencję do wyższych wartości PWV tętnicy ramiennej i udowej u osób ze zmianami wielonaczyniowymi w porównaniu z pacjentami z chorobą jednonaczyniową,
szyjnej wspólnej i tętnicy udowej wspólnej. Oceniano IMT oraz obecność blaszek miażdżycowych.
Określano funkcję nerek oraz wybrane parametry kliniczne i biochemiczne ryzyka rozwoju miażdżycy.
Analizowano 2 grupy chorych: 200 osób z potwierdzoną koronarograficznie chorobą wieńcową
(grupa badana) i 31 pacjentów bez zmian w naczyniach wieńcowych (grupa kontrolna).
(Folia
