These organisms, once in the small intestine, will reduce free cholesterol to coprostanol, which is absorbed poorly.     Eikonal Approximation for Coupled Equations for Multichannel Scattering

    It is well known that the Glauber approximation for scattering amplitudes is obtained by applying the eikonal approximation to the Fourier transform of the transition operator. The eikonal approximation can also be applied to the coupled equations of scattering obtained by the expansion of the state function in terms of a suitable set of functions. The scattering amplitude can thus be obtained by solving the set of eikonal coupled equations. The latter approach is analyzed for a special class of channel-coupling potentials. The first-order approximation to the derived eikonal coupled equations is the eikonal Born approximation. Numerical illustrations in this approximation are given for the 1s-2s and 1s-2p excitations of hydrogen atoms by electron and positron impact. The results are compared with those obtained in the Glauber eikonal approximation and with experimental measurements

    Bilateral retinal pigment epithelial rips in hypertensive choroidopathy

    AbstractSevere systemic hypertension can cause significant damage to the eye. Although hypertensive retinopathy is a well-known complication, hypertensive optic neuropathy and hypertensive choroidopathy are much less common. The aim of this article is to report an unusual case of hypertensive choroidopathy with bullous exudative retinal detachments in both eyes. The retinal detachments spontaneously resolved after blood pressure was controlled. However, multiple large retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) rips were found in both eyes. These RPE rips may be related to severe choroidal ischemia, and their locations may be compatible with the watershed zones of the choroidal perfusions

    Studying China’s IT Services Industry: Generalizations, Particularities, and the Competitive Outlook

    China’s IT Services industry has grown rapidly in the last decade. Chinese government has made it a priority to invest in the improvement of the capabilities of Chinese vendors, which helped vendors to expand and grow in local and global markets. Despite the fact that China is the second largest industrial economy, IS researchers are only now starting to pay serious attention to China’s IT Services industry. This panel is aimed at stimulating research in this area by debating two approaches: one approach that focuses on unique opportunities offered by this setting for developing insights generalizable to other settings and a second approach focused on generating theories that focus on the specifics of the Chinese context. Academic panelists, all of whom have conducted studies of China’s IT Services, will argue these different positions. They will be joined by an industry leader from IT services industry in China, who would talk about the future of the industry

    Neuroprotective effects and mechanism of cognitive-enhancing choline analogs JWB 1-84-1 and JAY 2-22-33 in neuronal culture and Caenorhabditis elegans

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Our previous work indicated that novel analogs of choline have cytoprotective effects <it>in vitro </it>that might be useful in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Furthermore, two lead compounds (JWB1-84-1 and JAY2-22-33) from a library of more than 50 improved cognitive performances in a transgenic mouse model of AD. The purpose of these experiments was to more specifically investigate the neuroprotective capabilities of these lead compounds both <it>in vitro </it>and <it>in vivo</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We used N2a cells which express a Swedish mutation in the amyloid precursor protein and presenilin 1 genes to investigate the effect of JWB1-84-1 and JAY2-22-33 on β-amyloid (Aβ) levels and found that both compounds significantly reduced Aβ levels. JWB1-84-1 and JAY2-22-33 also protected rat primary cortical neurons from Aβ toxicity. Subsequently, we utilized the nematode <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>(<it>C. elegans</it>) as an <it>in vivo </it>model organism to identify potential molecular targets of these compounds. In the <it>C. elegans </it>model of Aβ toxicity, human Aβ is expressed intracellularly in the body wall muscle. The expression and subsequent aggregation of Aβ in the muscle leads to progressive paralysis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We found that JAY2-22-33 (but not JWB1-84-1) significantly reduced Aβ toxicity by delaying paralysis and this protective effect required both the insulin signaling pathway and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs).</p

    Adipocyte CREB Promotes Insulin Resistance in Obesity

    SummaryIncreases in adiposity trigger metabolic and inflammatory changes that interfere with insulin action in peripheral tissues, culminating in beta cell failure and overt diabetes. We found that the cAMP Response Element Binding protein (CREB) is activated in adipose cells under obese conditions, where it promotes insulin resistance by triggering expression of the transcriptional repressor ATF3 and thereby downregulating expression of the adipokine hormone adiponectin as well as the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4). Transgenic mice expressing a dominant-negative CREB transgene in adipocytes displayed increased whole-body insulin sensitivity in the contexts of diet-induced and genetic obesity, and they were protected from the development of hepatic steatosis and adipose tissue inflammation. These results indicate that adipocyte CREB provides an early signal in the progression to type 2 diabetes

    There's no place like home: 35-year patient survival on home hemodialysis.

    The vast majority of maintenance dialysis patients suffer from poor long-term survival rates and lower levels of health-related quality of life. However, home hemodialysis is a historically significant dialysis modality that has been associated with favorable outcomes as well as greater patient autonomy and control, yet only represents a small minority of the total dialysis performed in the United States. Some potential disadvantages of home hemodialysis include vascular access complications, infection-related hospitalizations, patient fatigue, and attrition. In addition, current barriers and challenges in expanding the utilization of this modality include limited patient and provider education and technical expertise. Here we report a 65-year old male with end-stage renal disease due to Alport's syndrome who has undergone 35&nbsp;years of uninterrupted thrice-weekly home hemodialysis (ie, every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evening, each session lasting 3 to 3¼&nbsp;hours in length) using a conventional hemodialysis machine who has maintained a high functional status allowing him to work 6-8&nbsp;hours per day. The patient has been able to liberalize his dietary and fluid intake while only requiring 3-4&nbsp;liters of ultrafiltration per treatment, despite having absence of residual kidney function. Through this case of extraordinary longevity and outcomes after 35&nbsp;years of dialysis and a review of the literature, we illustrate the history of home hemodialysis, its significant clinical and psychosocial advantages, as well as the barriers that hinder its widespread adaptation

    Exploring preconception signatures of metabolites in mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus using a non-targeted approach

    BackgroundMetabolomic changes during pregnancy have been suggested to underlie the etiology of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, research on metabolites during preconception is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate distinctive metabolites during the preconception phase between GDM and non-GDM controls in a nested case-control study in Singapore.MethodsWithin a Singapore preconception cohort, we included 33 Chinese pregnant women diagnosed with GDM according to the IADPSG criteria between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. We then matched them with 33 non-GDM Chinese women by age and pre-pregnancy body mass index (ppBMI) within the same cohort. We performed a non-targeted metabolomics approach using fasting serum samples collected within 12 months prior to conception. We used generalized linear mixed model to identify metabolites associated with GDM at preconception after adjusting for maternal age and ppBMI. After annotation and multiple testing, we explored the additional predictive value of novel signatures of preconception metabolites in terms of GDM diagnosis.ResultsA total of 57 metabolites were significantly associated with GDM, and eight phosphatidylethanolamines were annotated using HMDB. After multiple testing corrections and sensitivity analysis, phosphatidylethanolamines 36:4 (mean difference beta: 0.07; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.11) and 38:6 (beta: 0.06; 0.004, 0.11) remained significantly higher in GDM subjects, compared with non-GDM controls. With all preconception signals of phosphatidylethanolamines in addition to traditional risk factors (e.g., maternal age and ppBMI), the predictive value measured by area under the curve (AUC) increased from 0.620 to 0.843.ConclusionsOur data identified distinctive signatures of GDM-associated preconception phosphatidylethanolamines, which is of potential value to understand the etiology of GDM as early as in the preconception phase. Future studies with larger sample sizes among alternative populations are warranted to validate the associations of these signatures of metabolites and their predictive value in GDM.Peer reviewe
