    Immunization of Rats Against Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda) by Subcutaneous Vaccination of Living Tetrathyridia and by Passive Transfer with Serum

    Laboratory rats were subcutaneously vaccinated with 100 live tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda) and subsequently intraperitoneally challenged with 50 tetrathyridia. Necropsy 30 days postinfection revealed that vaccinated rats harbored 97.4% fewer worms compared to control rats. In a second experiment, passive transfer of immunity was accomplished by immune serum from subcutaneously vaccinated rats. Rats receiving immune serum harbored 33.4% lighter worm burdens compared to normal serum recipients

    Ocular Immune Privilege and Ocular Melanoma: Parallel Universes or Immunological Plagiarism?

    Evidence of immune privilege in the eye was recorded almost 140 years ago, yet interest in immune privilege languished for almost a century. However, the past 35 years have witnessed a plethora of research and a rekindled interest in the mechanisms responsible for immune privilege in the anterior chamber of the eye. This research has demonstrated that multiple anatomical, structural, physiological, and immunoregulatory processes contribute to immune privilege and remind us of the enormous complexity of this phenomenon. It is widely accepted that immune privilege is an adaptation for reducing the risk of immune-mediated inflammation in organs such as the eye and brain whose tissues have a limited capacity to regenerate. Recent findings suggest that immune privilege also occurs in sites where stem cells reside and raise the possibility that immune privilege is also designed to prevent the unwitting elimination of stem cells by immune-mediated inflammation at these sites. Uveal melanoma arises within the eye and as such, benefits from ocular immune privilege. A significant body of research reveals an intriguing parallel between the mechanisms that contribute to immune privilege in the eye and those strategies used by uveal melanoma cells to evade immune elimination once they have disseminated from the eye and establish metastatic foci in the liver. Uveal melanoma metastases seem to have “plagiarized” the blueprints used for ocular immune privilege to create “ad hoc immune privileged sites” in the liver

    13kW Advanced Electric Propulsion Flight System Development and Qualification

    The next phase of robotic and human deep space exploration missions requires high performance, high power solar electric propulsion systems for large-scale science missions and cargo transportation. Aerojet Rocketdyne's Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) program is completing development and qualification of a 13kW flight EP system to support NASA exploration. The first use of the AEPS is planned for the NASA Power & Propulsion Element, which is the first element of NASA's cis-lunar Gateway. The flight AEPS system includes a magnetically shielded long-life Hall thruster, power processing unit (PPU), and xenon flow controller (XFC). The Hall thruster, originally developed and demonstrated by NASA's Glenn Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, operates at input powers up to 13.3kW while providing a specific impulse over 2600s at an input voltage of 600V. The power processor is designed to accommodate an input voltage range of 95 to 140V, consistent with operation beyond the orbit of Mars. The integrated system is continuously throttleable between 3 and 13.3kW. The program has completed testing of the Technology Development Units and is progressing into the Engineering Development Unit test phase and the final design phase to Critical Design Review (CDR). This paper will present the high power AEPS system capabilities, overall program and design status and the latest test results for the 13kW flight system development as well as the plans for the development and qualification effort of the EP string

    This research was motivated by low communication in the business retail in terms of service from employees to customers. It influences the decline in customer satisfaction and leads to customer loyalty at a very low level. This study aims to identify and analyze the significance of the influence of customer service (X1) and customer satisfaction (X2) on customer loyalty (Y). Research was conducted in February - May 2013 held at 7-Eleven Buaran Jakarta. Research used quantitative method by using questionnaires filled directly by the visitors of 7-Eleven Buaran with a population of 19.920 people and a sample of 100 people, calculated using the Slovin formula. Validity test, reliability, normality, correlation, regression, hypothesis, and the determination carried out in this study using the data processed using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) version 16.0. Results indicated that customer service has significant influence by 14.6% on customer loyalty, customer satisfaction has a significant effect of 8.5% on customer loyalty, and customer service and customer satisfaction have significant influence amounted to 15,2%. Thus, this study showed that customer service and customer satisfaction have a significant effect on customer loyalty in 7-eleven Buaran Jakarta

    Effect of Donor Langerhans Cells on Corneal Graft Rejection

    Unlike other cutaneous surfaces, the central portion of the corneal epithelium is typically devoid of Langerhans cells. The absence of Ia+ Langerhans cells in the central cornea is of more than casual interest and may explain the immunologic privilege that is characteristic of corneal allografts. The present communication, summarizes previous studies that examined the role of corneal Langerhans cells in eliciting alloimmune responses and corneal graft rejection in rodents. Under normal circumstances, cornmeal allografts are poorly immunogenic when residing in the avascular ocular graft bed even though the graft displays large quantities of alloantigens. The afferent blockade of the immune response can be circumvented by donor-derived Langerhans cells that serve as potent immunogens for all categories of corneal allografts except grafts involving allodisparity only at class I major histocompatibility complex loci. Thus, the presence of donor-derived Langerhans cells exerts profound effects on the fate of corneal allografts

    A regime map for dry powder coating: the influence of material properties and process parameters

    A numerical study is carried out to investigate the combined influence of material properties and process parameters on coating quality in a high shear mixer (specifically an FT4 Powder Rheometer) to construct a regime map. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is employed to simulate a range of material properties (size, density, and surface energy) and process parameters (impeller speed and mixing time) via Design of Experiments (DoE). A robust regime map is proposed for prediction of dry coating performance based on dimensionless Stokes deformation number (Stdef) and granular Bond number (Bo). The regime map provides insight on the optimal range of material properties and process parameters to achieve high coating levels in a high-shear bladed mixer. Furthermore, the minimum energy required to achieve optimal coating performance as well as regions of poor coating quality due to guest detachment exacerbated by excessive energy input can be identified from the regime map, thus reducing wastage of energy and coating material required. The regime map enables the required mixing time for optimal coating to be determined so long as particle size distributions and surface energies are known

    Effects of Predispersal Insect Seed Predation on the Early Life History Stages of a Rare Cold Sand-Desert Legume

    Seed predation by insects is common in seeds of Fabaceae (legume) species with physical dormancy (PY). However, the consequences of insect seed predation on the life history of legumes with PY have been little studied. In the largest genus of seed plants, Astragalus (Fabaceae), only one study has tested the effects of insect predation on germination, and none has tested it directly on seedling survival. Thus, we tested the effects of insect predation on seed germination and seedling growth and survival of Astragalus lehmannianus, a central Asian sand-desert endemic. Under laboratory conditions, seeds lightly predated in the natural habitat of this perennial legume germinated to a much higher percentage than intact seeds, and seedlings from predated and nonpredated seeds survived and grew about equally well. Further, in contrast to our prediction seedlings from predated seeds that germinated “out-of-season” under near-natural conditions in NW China survived over winter. The implication of our results is that individual plants from predated seeds that germinate early (in our case autumn) potentially have a fitness advantage over those from nonpredated seeds, which delay germination until spring of a subsequent year
