    Chemistry by Mobile Phone (or how to justify more time at the bar)

    By combining automatic environment monitoring with Java smartphones a system has been produced for the real-time monitoring of experiments whilst away from the lab. Changes in the laboratory environment are encapsulated as simple XML messages, which are published using an MQTT compliant broker. Clients subscribe to the MQTT stream, and produce a user display. An MQTT client written for the Java MIDP platform, can be run on a smartphone with a GPRS Internet connection, freeing us from the constraints of the lab. We present an overview of the technologies used, and how these are helping chemists make the best use of their time

    Underdiagnosis of mild cognitive impairment: A consequence of ignoring practice effects

    INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal testing is necessary to accurately measure cognitive change. However, repeated testing is susceptible to practice effects, which may obscure true cognitive decline and delay detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: We retested 995 late-middle-aged men in a āˆ¼6-year follow-up of the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. In addition, 170 age-matched replacements were tested for the first time at study wave 2. Group differences were used to calculate practice effects after controlling for attrition effects. MCI diagnoses were generated from practice-adjusted scores. RESULTS: There were significant practice effects on most cognitive domains. Conversion to MCI doubled after correcting for practice effects, from 4.5% to 9%. Importantly, practice effects were present although there were declines in uncorrected scores. DISCUSSION: Accounting for practice effects is critical to early detection of MCI. Declines, when lower than expected, can still indicate practice effects. Replacement participants are needed for accurately assessing disease progression.Published versio

    Identification of Novel Fibrosis Modifiers by InĀ Vivo siRNA Silencing.

    Fibrotic diseases contribute to 45% of deaths in the industrialized world, and therefore a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying tissue fibrosis is sorely needed. We aimed to identify novel modifiers of tissue fibrosis expressed by myofibroblasts and their progenitors in their disease microenvironment through RNA silencing inĀ vivo. We leveraged novel biology, targeting genes upregulated during liver and kidney fibrosis in this cell lineage, and employed small interfering RNA (siRNA)-formulated lipid nanoparticles technology to silence these genes in carbon-tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis in mice. We identified five genes, Egr2, Atp1a2, Fkbp10, Fstl1, and Has2, which modified fibrogenesis based on their silencing, resulting in reduced Col1a1 mRNA levels and collagen accumulation in the liver. These genes fell intoĀ different groups based on the effects of their silencing on a transcriptional mini-array and histological outcomes. Silencing of Egr2 had the broadest effects inĀ vivo and also reduced fibrogenic gene expression in a human fibroblast cell line. Prior to our study, Egr2, Atp1a2, and Fkbp10 had not been functionally validated in fibrosis inĀ vivo. Thus, our results provide a major advance over the existing knowledge of fibrogenic pathways.     Infrared Spectroscopy of Nearby Radio Active Elliptical Galaxies

    In preparation for a study of their circumnuclear gas we have surveyed 60% of a complete sample of elliptical galaxies within 75 Mpc that are radio sources. Some 20% of our nuclear spectra have infrared emission lines, mostly Paschen lines, Brackett Ī³, and [Fe II]. We consider the influence of radio power and black hole mass in relation to the spectra.     Anisotropic intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity of phosphorene from first principles

    Phosphorene, the single layer counterpart of black phosphorus, is a novel two-dimensional semiconductor with high carrier mobility and a large fundamental direct band gap, which has attracted tremendous interest recently. Its potential applications in nano-electronics and thermoelectrics call for a fundamental study of the phonon transport. Here, we calculate the intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity of phosphorene by solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) based on first-principles calculations. The thermal conductivity of phosphorene at 300ā€‰K300\,\mathrm{K} is 30.15ā€‰Wmāˆ’1Kāˆ’130.15\,\mathrm{Wm^{-1}K^{-1}} (zigzag) and 13.65ā€‰Wmāˆ’1Kāˆ’113.65\,\mathrm{Wm^{-1}K^{-1}} (armchair), showing an obvious anisotropy along different directions. The calculated thermal conductivity fits perfectly to the inverse relation with temperature when the temperature is higher than Debye temperature (Ī˜D=278.66ā€‰K\Theta_D = 278.66\,\mathrm{K}). In comparison to graphene, the minor contribution around 5%5\% of the ZA mode is responsible for the low thermal conductivity of phosphorene.     The Combechem MQTT LEGO microscope: a grid enabled scientific apparatus demonstrator

    Grid computing impacts directly on the experimental scientific laboratory in the areas of monitoring and remote control of experiments, and the storage, processing and dissemination of the resulting data. We highlight some of the issues in extending the use of an MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) broker from facilitating the remote monitoring of an experiment and its environment to the remote control of an apparatus. To demonstrate these techniques, an Intel-Play QX3 microscope has been "grid-enabled" using a combination of software to control the microscope imaging, and sample handling hardware built from LEGO Mindstorms. The whole system is controlled remotely by passing messages using an IBM WebSphere Message Broker. <br/

    Inhibition of Ī±vĪ²5 Integrin Attenuates Vascular Permeability and Protects against Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

    Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a leading cause of AKI. This common clinical complication lacks effective therapies and can lead to the development of CKD. The Ī±vĪ²5 integrin may have an important role in acute injury, including septic shock and acute lung injury. To examine its function in AKI, we utilized a specific function-blocking antibody to inhibit Ī±vĪ²5 in a rat model of renal IRI. Pretreatment with this anti-Ī±vĪ²5 antibody significantly reduced serum creatinine levels, diminished renal damage detected by histopathologic evaluation, and decreased levels of injury biomarkers. Notably, therapeutic treatment with the Ī±vĪ²5 antibody 8 hours after IRI also provided protection from injury. Global gene expression profiling of post-ischemic kidneys showed that Ī±vĪ²5 inhibition affected established injury markers and induced pathway alterations previously shown to be protective. Intravital imaging of post-ischemic kidneys revealed reduced vascular leak with Ī±vĪ²5 antibody treatment. Immunostaining for Ī±vĪ²5 in the kidney detected evident expression in perivascular cells, with negligible expression in the endothelium. Studies in a three-dimensional microfluidics system identified a pericyte-dependent role for Ī±vĪ²5 in modulating vascular leak. Additional studies showed Ī±vĪ²5 functions in the adhesion and migration of kidney pericytes in vitro Initial studies monitoring renal blood flow after IRI did not find significant effects with Ī±vĪ²5 inhibition; however, future studies should explore the contribution of vasomotor effects. These studies identify a role for Ī±vĪ²5 in modulating injury-induced renal vascular leak, possibly through effects on pericyte adhesion and migration, and reveal Ī±vĪ²5 inhibition as a promising therapeutic strategy for AKI

    Reliability of the Spinal Instability Neoplastic Score (SINS) among radiation oncologists: an assessment of instability secondary to spinal metastases

    BACKGROUND: The Spinal Instability Neoplastic Score (SINS) categorizes tumor related spinal instability. It has the potential to streamline the referral of patients with established or potential spinal instability to a spine surgeon. This study aims to define the inter- and intra-observer reliability and validity of SINS among radiation oncologists. METHODS: Thirty-three radiation oncologists, across ten international sites, rated 30 neoplastic spinal disease cases. For each case, the total SINS (0-18 points), three clinical categories (stable: 0-6 points, potentially unstable: 7-12 points, and unstable: 13-18 points), and a binary scale (ā€˜stableā€™: 0-6 points and ā€˜current or possible instabilityā€™; surgical consultation recommended: 7-18 points) were recorded. Evaluation was repeated 6-8Ā weeks later. Inter-observer agreement and intra-observer reproducibility were calculated by means of the kappa statistic and translated into levels of agreement (slight, fair, moderate, substantial, and excellent). Validity was determined by comparing the ratings against a spinal surgeonā€™s consensus standard. RESULTS: Radiation oncologists demonstrated substantial (Īŗā€‰=ā€‰0.76) inter-observer and excellent (Īŗā€‰=ā€‰0.80) intra-observer reliability when using the SINS binary scale (ā€˜stableā€™ versus ā€˜current or possible instabilityā€™). Validity of the binary scale was also excellent (Īŗā€‰=ā€‰0.85) compared with the gold standard. None of the unstable cases was rated as stable by the radiation oncologists ensuring all were appropriately recommended for surgical consultation. CONCLUSIONS: Among radiation oncologists SINS is a highly reliable, reproducible, and valid assessment tool to address a key question in tumor related spinal disease: Is the spine ā€˜stableā€™ or is there ā€˜current or possible instabilityā€™ that warrants surgical assessment
