    Band Gap Closing in a Synthetic Hall Tube of Neutral Fermions

    We report the experimental realization of a synthetic three-leg Hall tube with ultracold fermionic atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The legs of the synthetic tube are composed of three hyperfine spin states of the atoms, and the cyclic inter-leg links are generated by two-photon Raman transitions between the spin states, resulting in a uniform gauge flux Ï•\phi penetrating each side plaquette of the tube. Using quench dynamics, we investigate the band structure of the Hall tube system for a commensurate flux Ï•=2Ï€/3\phi=2\pi/3. Momentum-resolved analysis of the quench dynamics reveals that a critical point of band gap closing as one of the inter-leg coupling strengths is varied, which is consistent with a topological phase transition predicted for the Hall tube system.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    A simple rat model of mild traumatic brain injury: device to reproduce anatomical and neurological changes of mild traumatic brain injury

Mild traumatic brain injury typically involves temporary impairment of neurological function. Previous studies used the water pressure or rotational injury for designing the device to make a rat mild traumatic brain injury model. The objective of this study was to make a simple model of mild traumatic brain injury in rat. The device consisted of a freefall impactor that was targeted onto the rat skull. The weight (175g) was freely dropped 30cm to rat's skull bregma. We installed a safety device made of acrylic panel. (Collins et al. 1999). Actually, hospital-treated MTBIs are no more than 26 100 to 300/100,000 (Harmon et al. 2013). Neurological, cognitive and behavioral deficits, caused 27 by MTBIs, are observed only for a short period of time. A headache, vomiting, cognitive slowing, 28 fatigue, dizziness, depression, and problems with attention and memory can be one of its 29 symptoms (d'Hemecourt. 2011; 39 However, such a damaging mechanism, which delivered shock to their head and fell down them, 40 could not induce MTBIs alone. In another study, shocks were delivered to the craniums of rats 41 equipped with helmet disks, but it was also complicated to put the helmet disk (Xu et al. 2014). 42 In the case of a method suggested by Tang et al., it was comparatively simple and did not cause 43 skull fracture

    Double resonance of Raman transitions in a degenerate Fermi gas

    We measure momentum-resolved Raman spectra of a spin-polarized degenerate Fermi gas of 173^{173}Yb atoms for a wide range of magnetic fields, where the atoms are irradiated by a pair of counterpropagating Raman laser beams as in the conventional spin-orbit coupling scheme. Double resonance of first- and second-order Raman transitions occurs at a certain magnetic field and the spectrum exhibits a doublet splitting for high laser intensities. The measured spectral splitting is quantitatively accounted for by the Autler-Townes effect. We show that our measurement results are consistent with the spinful band structure of a Fermi gas in the spatially oscillating effective magnetic field generated by the Raman laser fields.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Creutz ladder in a resonantly shaken 1D optical lattice

    We report the experimental realization of a Creutz ladder for ultracold fermionic atoms in a resonantly driven 1D optical lattice. The two-leg ladder consists of the two lowest orbital states of the optical lattice and the cross inter-leg links are generated via two-photon resonant coupling between the orbitals by periodic lattice shaking. The characteristic pseudo-spin winding structure in the energy bands of the ladder system is demonstrated using momentum-resolved Ramsey-type interferometric measurements. We discuss a two-tone driving method to extend the inter-leg link control and propose a topological charge pumping scheme for the Creutz ladder system. ©2020 The Author(s).     Efficiency comparisons of fish sampling gears for a lentic ecosystem health assessments in Korea

    AbstractThe key objective of this study was to analyze the sampling efficiency of various fish sampling gears for a lentic ecosystem health assessment. A fish survey for the lentic ecosystem health assessment model was sampled twice from 30 reservoirs during 2008–2012. During the study, fishes of 81 species comprising 53,792 individuals were sampled from 30 reservoirs. A comparison of sampling gears showed that casting nets were the best sampling gear with high species richness (69 species), whereas minnow traps were the worst gear with low richness (16 species). Fish sampling efficiency, based on the number of individual catch per unit effort, was best in fyke nets (28,028 individuals) and worst in minnow traps (352 individuals). When we compared trammel nets and kick nets versus fyke nets and casting nets, the former were useful in terms of the number of fish individuals but not in terms of the number of fish species

    Realization of a cross-linked chiral ladder with neutral fermions in an optical lattice by orbital-momentum coupling

    We report the experimental realization of a cross-linked chiral ladder with ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. In the ladder, the legs are formed by the orbital states of the optical lattice and the complex inter-leg links are generated by the orbital-changing Raman transitions that are driven by a moving lattice potential superimposed onto the optical lattice. The effective magnetic flux per ladder plaquette is tuned by the spatial periodicity of the moving lattice, and the chiral currents are observed from the asymmetric momentum distributions of the orbitals. The effect of the complex cross links is demonstrated in quench dynamics by measuring the momentum dependence of the inter-orbital coupling strength. We discuss the topological phase transition of the chiral ladder system for the variations of the complex cross links.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    The effect of various design codes and dynamic magnification on buildings with torsional irregularity

    Seismic provisions have utilized design eccentricities to reduce planar irregularities in lateral stiffness of buildings. In calculating a design eccentricity, the torsional amplification factor may be applied either to accidental eccentricity or to both inherent and accidental eccentricities according to design codes. In this paper, different code provisions and their impact on torsional responses of buildings are investigated using example buildings with various aspect ratios and inherent eccentricities. It was found that the design eccentricity in KBC-2009 using torsional amplification factor for only accidental eccentricity reflects the dynamic magnification more accurately than that in KBC-2006 using this factor for both inherent and accidental eccentricity. And dynamic magnification of a torsionally imbalanced building is affected by the size of seismic design force of response spectrum analysis than design eccentricity of equivalent static analysis in KBC-2009. In other words, design eccentricity including torsional amplification factor in KBC-2009 do not reflect the dynamic magnification accurately

    AbstractThe subsystem synthesis method has been developed in order to improve computational efficiency for a multibody vehicle dynamics model. Using the subsystem synthesis method, equations of motion of the base body and each subsystem can be solved separately. In the subsystem synthesis method, various coordinate systems can be used and various integration methods can be applied in each subsystem, as long as the effective mass matrix and the effective force vector are properly produced. In this paper, comparative study has been carried out for the subsystem synthesis method with Cartesian coordinates and with joint relative coordinates. Two different integration methods such as an explicit integrator and an explicit implicit integrator are employed. In order to see the accuracy and computational efficiency from the different models based on the different coordinate systems and different integration methods, a rough terrain run simulations has been carried out with a 6 × 6 off-road multibody vehicle model
