    Geology of Utah and Nevada by ERTS-1 imagery

    Repetitive ERTS-1 imagery covering Utah and Nevada is studied as an aid in structural geology, mineral exploration, and limnological and hydrological aspects. Limnological features of algal blooms and varying biological activities in Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake are grossly evident on the imagery with more subtle details detected on the different bands. Major structural breaks, lineages, or trends are abundant throughout the area of study. The correlation of positive aeromagnetic anomalies with the trends suggests near surface intrusive bodies, not yet exposed at the surface, that can be tested for possible associated mineralization by collecting soil-gas at the surface which is analyzed for mercury that is (1) apparently associated with mineralization, (2) escapes as a vapor, and (3) can be readily measured in extremely low amounts of less than 1 ppb by absorption

    The author has identified the following significant results. An enhanced enlargement of a S190B color image at a scale of 1/19,200 of the Bingham porphyry copper deposit has compared a geological map of the area with the space imagery map as fair for the intrusion boundaries and total lack of quality for mapping the sediments. Hydrothermal alteration is only slightly evident on space imagery at Bingham, but in the Tintic mining district and the volcanic piles of the Keg and Thomas ranges, Utah, hydrothermal alteration is readily mapped on color enlargements of S190B. Several sites of calderas were recognized and new ones located on space imagery. One of the tools developed is a mercury soil-gas analyzer that is becoming significant as an aid in locating hidden mineralized zones which were suggested from space imagery. In addition, this tool is a prime aid in locating and better delineating geothermal sites

    Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars and Maximum Masses

    Using the most recent realistic effective interactions for nuclear matter with a smooth extrapolation to high densities including causality, we constrain the equation of state and calculate maximum masses of rotating neutron stars. First and second order phase transitions to, e.g., quark matter at high densities are included. If neutron star masses of ∼2.3M⊙\sim 2.3M_\odot from quasi-periodic oscillations in low mass X-ray binaries are confirmed, a soft equation of state as well as strong phase transitions can be excluded in neutron star cores.Comment: Replaced with revised version, 7 pages, 3 figs.     Reaction-diffusion processes and non-perturbative renormalisation group

    This paper is devoted to investigating non-equilibrium phase transitions to an absorbing state, which are generically encountered in reaction-diffusion processes. It is a review, based on [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 195703; Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 255703; Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 100601], of recent progress in this field that has been allowed by a non-perturbative renormalisation group approach. We mainly focus on branching and annihilating random walks and show that their critical properties strongly rely on non-perturbative features and that hence the use of a non-perturbative method turns out to be crucial to get a correct picture of the physics of these models.Comment: 14 pages, submitted to J.     Hard hexagon partition function for complex fugacity

    We study the analyticity of the partition function of the hard hexagon model in the complex fugacity plane by computing zeros and transfer matrix eigenvalues for large finite size systems. We find that the partition function per site computed by Baxter in the thermodynamic limit for positive real values of the fugacity is not sufficient to describe the analyticity in the full complex fugacity plane. We also obtain a new algebraic equation for the low density partition function per site.Comment: 49 pages, IoP styles files, lots of figures (png mostly) so using PDFLaTeX.
