Disciplined or Punished? The Future of Graduate Education in Women's Studies
This article considers the ways in which graduate programs in women's studies and the students in those programs are challenged by the still-present emphasis on disciplinary training. It discusses some methodological, ethical, and programmatic questions associated with running graduate programs in women's studies, and some practical recommendations in response, ones that resist making a choice between either sustaining or abandoning women's studies programming.

Learning in Middle School Library Makerspaces: A Makerspace Collaboration Guide for School Librarians
This paper establishes an argument for the beneficial roles makerspaces can provide in school library programs. It builds a bridge between formal and informal education by grounding it in current accepted educational theories and frameworks including constructivism, constructionism, inquiry-based learning, and Backward Design. The paper stresses the importance of understanding adolescents and how they learn in a school library makerspace. It also addresses the role of school librarians as collaborators and their responsibility to conduct evidence-based practice. The final product resulting from this work is a makerspace collaboration guide intended for use by school librarians. It provides tools for facilitating productive collaborations between the school librarian, teachers, students, and community members. Meso – and Neoarchean tectonic evolution of the northwestern Superior Province: Insights from a U-Pb geochronology, Nd isotope, and geochemistry study of the Island Lake greenstone belt, Northeastern Manitoba
What tectonic processes were operating in the Archean, and whether they were similar to the “modern-style” plate tectonics seen operating today, is a fundamental question about Archean geology. The Superior Province is the largest piece of preserved Archean crust on Earth. As such it provides an excellent opportunity to study Archean tectonic processes. Much work has been completed in the southern part of the Superior Province. A well-documented series of discrete, southward younging orogenies related to a series of northward dipping subduction zones, has been proposed for amalgamating this part of the Superior Province. The tectonic evolution in the northwestern Superior Province is much less constrained, and it is unclear if it is related to the series of subduction zones in the southern part of the Superior Province, or if it is related to an entirely different process. Such ideas need to be tested in order to develop a concise model for the Meso – and Neoarchean tectonic evolution of the northwestern Superior Province.
To this end, a field mapping, U-Pb geochronology, Nd isotope, and lithogeochemistry study was undertaken in the Island Lake greenstone belt. This granite-greenstone belt is part of the northern margin of the North Caribou terrane, a larger reworked Mesoarchean crustal block located in the northwestern Superior Province. U-Pb TIMS zircon geochronology data shows that the Island Lake greenstone belt experienced a long and complex geological history that included the deposition of three distinct volcanic assemblages at ca. 2897 Ma, 2852 Ma, and 2744 Ma, as well as a younger clastic sedimentary group, the Island Lake group. All of these volcanic assemblages include felsic and mafic volcanic rocks, as well as a suite of contemporaneous plutonic rocks. The U-Pb data set shows that the Savage Island shear zone, a regional fault structure that transects the Island Lake greenstone belt, is not a terrane-bounding feature as correlative supracrustal assemblages are observed on both sides of it. The Nd isotope data shows that the volcanic assemblages and contemporaneous plutons have been variably contaminated by an older ca. 3.0 Ga crustal source. The mafic volcanic rocks in the assemblages have two distinct geochemical signatures, and show a pattern of decreasing crustal contamination with decreasing age. Together these data suggests that the Meso – and Neoarchean volcanic assemblages are part of an intact primary volcanic stratigraphy that were built on the same ca. 3.0 Ga basement and have autochthonous relationships with each other. This basement is the North Caribou terrane.
The youngest sedimentary group in the belt, the Island Lake group, was deposited between 2712 Ma and 2699 Ma. It consists of “Timiskaming-type” sedimentary rocks, and is the youngest clastic sedimentary package in the belt. A detailed study of detrital zircons in units from the stratigraphic bottom to the top of the sedimentary group indicates an age pattern of detrital zircons that is most consistent with a scenario in which sediments were deposited in inter-diapiric basins created by diapirism and sagduction (i.e., vertical tectonic) processes. During the diapiric ascent of the felsic material, inter-diapiric basins were formed in the synclines between adjacent domes, into which sediments were deposited.
U-Pb zircon TIMS geochronology identified two ages of deformation in the Island Lake greenstone belt. Two dykes that crosscut an older, D1 foliation place a minimum age of ca. 2723 Ma on the D1 deformation, and two syn-kinematic dykes date movement along two transpressional shear zones to 2700 Ma.
Together all these data indicate that the tectonic evolution in the Island Lake greenstone belt and in the northwestern Superior Province took place in three main stages. The first two stages involved the generation of Meso – and Neoarchean volcanic assemblages and contemporaneous plutonic rocks due to southward dipping subduction under the North Caribou micro-continent. The third stage involved the deposition of late “Timiskaming-type” sediments during vertical tectonic processes in conjunction with horizontal tectonic movement along late transpressional shear zones at ca. 2.70 Ga. At the end of this process the North Superior superterrane was terminally docked to the North Caribou terrane along the North Kenyon fault. This study shows that while a version of horizontal or “modern” style plate tectonics were operating in the Archean, vertical tectonic processes were also occurring and that these processes operated synchronously in the Neoarchean

The Effects of Counting as a Form of Concurrent Feedback on a Seventy-Five-Yard Dash
The use of concurrent Information Feedback (IF) through counting seconds verbally as the subject ran a 75 yard dash was tested. Forty-six ten and eleven year old boys and girls (boys = 20, girls = 26) were given two trials under four IF conditions: No IF; Terminal/Concurrent IF; Terminal IF; IF Removal. The counting occurred under Condition 2 and was combined with a final time given at the end of the dash. Significant main effects were found for sex and for conditions, with interaction effects between sex and conditions, and between conditions and trials, p4 .05. Results supported the combined IF condition with counting as maintaining subjects' level of performance, probably through motivation. Males performed well under Conditions 1, 2, and 3, while girls performed best under Conditions 1 and 2. Trial scores under Conditions 2 and 3 for all subjects were much more similar than under Conditions 1 and 4, indicating more consistent performance when IF was provided
Strategies to Mitigate Negative Social Media Communications in Collegiate Athletics
Harmful social media communications in collegiate athletics are challenging, compelling athletic administrators to implement strategies to mitigate costly damage to the university. Grounded in framing theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies some collegiate athletic administrators use to mitigate negative social media communications by their student-athletes and coaches that may cause problems resulting in reputational damage to the brand, negative publicity, financial loss, sanctions, and fines for the university or college. Participants were 4 collegiate athletic administrators located in the southeastern United States, who had a social media policy and strategies to successfully mitigate inappropriate social media communications by their student-athletes and coaches. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, policies, and other school documents. Data analysis involved thematic coding and Yin\u27s 5-step analysis process. The 4 themes that emerged were education, communication, monitoring, and disciplinary actions. A key recommendation is for athletic administrators to recognize the importance of positive framing of the social media policy and strategies to get compliance and understanding from the student-athletes to use social media responsibly to eliminate personal and professional reputational damage to their schools. The implications for positive social change include the potential for athletic administrators to create social media guidelines framed positively to mitigate risks, job, and financial loss, increase reputational branding for student-athletes, and promote adherence to the policy along with social media civility

Check with the Intended Audience First! Content Validation as a Method for Inclusive Research for Primary Care Engagement in Rural Appalachia
Introduction: To date, referral practices based on social determinants of health (SDOH) among primary care providers (PCPs) and clinic staff in rural regions, including Appalachian North Carolina (NC), are not well understood.
Purpose: This study aims to develop and content validate a primary care engagement (PCE) survey to assess (1) engagement and burnout; (2) referral practices; and (3) self-efficacy and confidence in making referrals based on SDOH among PCPs and clinic staff in Appalachian NC.
Methods: Using the Social-Ecological Model as a theoretical framework, researchers developed a 37-item PCE survey. Content validation was completed by a panel of experts recruited from a convenience sample of faculty at a local university and PCPs and clinic staff practicing in Appalachian NC. Participants rated the degree of relevance of survey questions on a four-point Likert scale and provided additional feedback about the wording/appropriateness for the intended audience. Content validity index (CVI) scores were calculated for each question by averaging the degree of relevance ratings.
Results: Ten participants completed the study between August and November 2022 (nurse practitioners, academic researchers, clinical support staff/quality improvement associates, administrative staff supervisor, administrator/practice manager). CVI scores for each item ranged from 3.43 to 4.0. Comments regarding potential improvements were primarily focused on small edits, including grammar-related changes and opportunities for clarity and inclusivity.
Implications: High CVI ratings for all survey items indicate the overall approach/survey aim resonates with local clinicians and individuals with expertise in SDOH. This study and the final survey lay the foundation for collaborative, collective-impact initiatives that are directly informed by the survey findings
Front gardens to car parks: changes in garden permeability and effects on flood regulation
This study addresses the consequences of widespread conversion of permeable front gardens to hard standing car parking surfaces, and the potential consequences in high risk urban flooding hotspots, in the city of Southampton. The last two decades has seen a trend for domestic front gardens in urban areas to be converted for parking, driven by the lack of space and increased car ownership. Despite media and political attention, the effects of this change are unknown, but increased and more intense rainfall, potentially linked to climate change, could generate negative consequences as runoff from impermeable surfaces increases. Information is limited on garden permeability change, despite the consequences for ecosystem services, especially flood regulation. We focused on eight flooding hotspots identified by the local council as part of a wider urban flooding policy response. Aerial photographs from 1991, 2004 and 2011 were used to estimate changes in surface cover and to analyse permeability change within a digital surfacemodel in a GIS environment. The 1, 30 and 100 year required attenuation storage volumes were estimated, which are the temporary storage required to reduce the peak flow rate given surface permeability.Within our study areas, impermeable cover in domestic front gardens increased by 22.47% over the 20-year study period (1991–2011) and required attenuation storage volumes increased by 26.23% on average. These increases suggest that a consequence of the conversion of gardens to parking areas will be a potential increase in flooding frequency and severity — a situation which is likely to occur in urban locations worldwide
