    Model-based spacecraft and mission design for the evaluation of technology

    In order to meet the future vision of robotic missions, engineers will face intricate mission concepts, new operational approaches, and technologies that have yet to be developed. The concept of smaller, model driven projects helps this transition by including life-cycle cost as part of the decision making process. For example, since planetary exploration missions have cost ceilings and short development periods, heritage flight hardware is utilized. However, conceptual designs that rely solely on heritage technology will result in estimates that may not be truly representative of the actual mission being designed and built. The Laboratory for Spacecraft and Mission Design (LSMD) at the California Institute of Technology is developing integrated concurrent models for mass and cost estimations. The purpose of this project is to quantify the infusion of specific technologies where the data would be useful in guiding technology developments leading up to a mission. This paper introduces the design-to-cost model to determine the implications of various technologies on the spacecraft system in a collaborative engineering environment. In addition, comparisons of the benefits of new or advanced technologies for future deep space missions are examined

    Changes in Teachers’ Adaptive Expertise in an Engineering Professional Development Course

    Although the consensus seems to be that high-school-level introductory engineering courses should focus on design, this creates a problem for teacher training. Traditionally, math and science teachers are trained to teach and assess factual knowledge and closed-ended problemsolving techniques specific to a particular discipline, which is unsuited for teaching design skills for open-ended problems that may involve multiple engineering disciplines. Instead, engineering teacher training should use the more fluid framework of adaptive expertise which values the ability to apply knowledge in innovative ways as well as recall facts and solve problems using conventional techniques. In this study, we examined a 6-week program to train math/science teachers to teach high school design engineering. For each curriculum unit, we had a pre-posttest to assess the teachers’ factual knowledge and ability to solve typical problems (termed ‘‘efficiency’’) and their ability to apply their knowledge to reason through open-ended problems (termed ‘‘innovation’’). In addition, we conducted a pre-posttest to see whether teachers’ attitudes and beliefs related to adaptive expertise changed over the course of the program

    The Glycemic, Cholesterol, and Weight Effects of L-carnitine in Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Introduction L-carnitine possibly impacts insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. However, its therapeutic role in diabetes is poorly understood. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) from inception through June 30, 2021. Included studies evaluated the use of L-carnitine in diabetes on fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), weight, or body mass index (BMI). Weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model. Results Seventeen studies involving 1622 patients were included. Reductions in FBG (WMD = -0.46 mmol/L, 95% CI = -0.68 to -0.23 mmol/L), HbA1c (WMD = -0.5%, 95% CI = -0.8 to -0.1%), TC (WMD = -0.29 mmol/L, 95% CI = -0.42 to -0.16 mmol/L), and LDL-C (WMD = -0.23 mmol/L, 95% CI = -0.39 to -0.07 mmol/L) were significant. Effects on HDL-C, TG, weight, or BMI were insignificant. Doses between 1001 to 2000 mg showed greatest benefit (p \u3c 0.02 for all). Discussion/Conclusion L-carnitine plays a potential role as adjunctive therapy in diabetes. Additional research is necessary for patients with higher baseline HbA1c and type 1 diabetes
