Traduire la France et le Directoire dans The Columbian Orator de Caleb Bingham (1797)

Le présent article fait état d’une étude des traductions de discours de personnalités militaires et politiques françaises (l’abbé Fauchet, Pierre-Auguste Adet, Napoléon Bonaparte, Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot) publiées en 1797 dans l’anthologie The Columbian Orator du révérend Caleb Bingham, imprimeur à Boston. Maintes fois réédité jusque dans les années 1830, pour un total de 190 000 exemplaires, ce volume et les traductions qu’il contenait modelèrent de façon significative l’image de la France aux États-Unis. La personnalité des auteurs convoqués, les sujets abordés, le style de ces discours ainsi que le contexte global dans lequel ils furent rédigés, prononcés et traduits, apportent un éclairage sur les relations franco-américaines de cette période et font de ces traductions un cas d’école illustrant l’importance des paramètres politiques et idéologiques intervenant dans la sélection et la traduction de textes quelle que soit l’époque.This paper examines the translations of speeches by French politicians and military men (Abbé Fauchet, Pierre-Auguste Adet, Napoléon Bonaparte, Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot) published in 1797 in the The Columbian Orator, an anthology compiled by Bostonian printer and minister Caleb Bingham. Because it was republished many times well into the 1830s, with a great number of copies circulating (up to 190,000), this book and the translations it contained played a significant role in shaping the image of France in the United States. The very personality of the authors, the topics they dealt with, their style and the global context in which the speeches were written, delivered and translated, shed light on the relationship between the two countries during that period and offer insight into the political and ideological factors underlying the selection and translation of texts at all times

Implementing Risk Management Decisions that Optimize Nutrient Value of Dairy Manure while Minimizing Related Risk

Nutrients present in manure are increasingly receiving attention for environmental, production, and financial reasons. Dairy producers continue to strive for better ways and educational opportunities to improve profits by evaluating fertilizer and value of manure to their operation and to protect the environment. These farming decisions which help producers stay economically viable also support and stimulate their local economy, which promotes a more vital rural community. Utilizing 22 dairy nutrient management surveys, 14 on-farm workshops, 10 small group on-farm assessment workshops, one video, and individual producer visits, producers were able to make informed decisions using tools and knowledge gained to control risks associated with manure nutrients during handling, storage, and application

Pilgrimage of children words in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and its french translations. The case of mimetic indirect discourse This article studies the Mimetic Indirect Discourse in Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 1876 and its French translations 1884–1963. In the original, words belonging to the language of children go on an initial pilgrimage as they encroach upon the Narrator’s Discourse which, as a rule, reflects an adult point of view. The pilgrimage is made twofold as these words or phrases make it into another language through the translation process. This essay is an attempt at answering two overlapping questions: What effect does the Mimetic Indirect Discourse achieve? In what ways was it handled by translators? The reader shall first be reminded of the characteristics of Mimetic Indirect Discourse in connection to other discourses. A study between English and French in the tradition of Compared Stylistics then follows.
