    Spin-Flavor Structure of Large N Baryons

    The spin-flavor structure of large N baryons is described in the 1/N expansion of QCD using quark operators. The complete set of quark operator identities is obtained, and used to derive an operator reduction rule which simplifies the 1/N expansion. The operator reduction rule is applied to the axial currents, masses, magnetic moments and hyperon non-leptonic decay amplitudes in the SU(3)SU(3) limit, to first order in SU(3)SU(3) breaking, and without assuming SU(3)SU(3) symmetry. The connection between the Skyrme and quark representations is discussed. An explicit formula is given for the quark model operators in terms of the Skyrme model operators to all orders in 1/N1/\N for the two flavor case.Comment: 36 pages, 2 eps figures, uses revte

    The 1/N_c expansion of the heavy baryon Isgur-Wise functions is discussed.     We calculate the phase shifts in the pion-nucleon scattering using the heavy baryon formalism. We consider phase shifts for the pion energy range of 140 to 200200 MeV. We employ two different methods for calculating the phase shifts - the first using the full third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude and the second by including the resonances Δ\Delta and NN^* as explicit degrees of freedom in the Lagrangian. We compare the results of the two methods with phase shifts extracted from fits to the pion-nucleon scattering data. We find good to fair agreement between the calculations and the phase shifts from scattering data.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 6figures. Revised version to appear in Phys.Rev.

    On the structure of large N cancellations in baryon chiral perturbation theory

    We show how to compute loop graphs in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including the full functional dependence on the ratio of the Delta--nucleon mass difference to the pion mass, while at the same time automatically incorporating the 1/N cancellations that follow from the large-N spin-flavor symmetry of baryons in QCD. The one-loop renormalization of the baryon axial vector current is studied to demonstrate the procedure. A new cancellation is identified in the one-loop contribution to the baryon axial vector current. We show that loop corrections to the axial vector currents are exceptionally sensitive to deviations of the ratios of baryon-pion axial couplings from SU(6) values

    Baryon masses at second order in large-NN chiral perturbation theory

    We consider flavor breaking in the the octet and decuplet baryon masses at second order in large-NN chiral perturbation theory, where NN is the number of QCD colors. We assume that 1/N1/NFms/Λmu,d/Λ,αEM1/N \sim 1/N_F \sim m_s / \Lambda \gg m_{u,d}/\Lambda, \alpha_{EM}, where NFN_F is the number of light quark flavors, and mu,d,s/Λm_{u,d,s} / \Lambda are the parameters controlling SU(NF)SU(N_F) flavor breaking in chiral perturbation theory. We consistently include non-analytic contributions to the baryon masses at orders mq3/2m_q^{3/2}, mq2lnmqm_q^2 \ln m_q, and (mqlnmq)/N(m_q \ln m_q) / N. The mq3/2m_q^{3/2} corrections are small for the relations that follow from SU(NF)SU(N_F) symmetry alone, but the corrections to the large-NN relations are large and have the wrong sign. Chiral power-counting and large-NN consistency allow a 2-loop contribution at order mq2lnmqm_q^2 \ln m_q, and a non-trivial explicit calculation is required to show that this contribution vanishes. At second order in the expansion, there are eight relations that are non-trivial consequences of the 1/N1/N expansion, all of which are well satisfied within the experimental errors. The average deviation at this order is 7 \MeV for the \De I = 0 mass differences and 0.35 \MeV for the \De I \ne 0 mass differences, consistent with the expectation that the error is of order 1/N210%1/N^2 \sim 10\%.Comment: 19 pages, 2 uuencoded ps figs, uses revte

    The 1/N expansion for exotic baryons is developed, and applied to the masses, meson couplings and decay widths. Masses and widths of the 27 and 35 pentaquark states in the same tower as the Theta+ are related by spin-flavor symmetry. The 27 and 35 states can decay within the pentaquark tower, as well as to normal baryons, and so have larger decay widths than the lightest pentaquark Theta. The 1/N expansion also is applied to baryon exotics containing a single heavy antiquark. The decay widths of heavy pentaquarks via pion emission, and to normal baryons plus heavy D^(*),B^(*) mesons are studied, and relations following from large-N spin-flavor symmetry and from heavy quark symmetry are derived.Comment: Major additions: plots of widths and branching ratios, discussion of strong decays of heavy pentaquarks, including consequences of heavy quark symmetr

    Prospects for the interdisciplinary role of English studies in South African universities

    Debate on the nature of English studies in South Africa has not produced an indication of a way forward. Since English became a school and university subject, its contents and aims have never been fixed for long. This paper proposes that the indeterminate nature of the subject should be exploited by seeking new ways f or English to interact with other disciplines. English has a reciprocal relationship with other disciplines, most notably philosophy; but to call it a science is to take it into a dead end. In South Africa, contested areas of subject matter are the nature of English as spoken by and taught to non-mother tongue speakers, and the metropolitan/ colonial literature distinction. English should join other disciplines in exploring new aesthetic and philosophical paradigms that reflect the country's multicultural composition. A new approach to curriculum theory f o r universities is needed to explore interdisciplinary cooperation. The complexity of South A frican society also requires new teaching methods across the disciplines
