Naturalness of the Coleman-Glashow Mass Relation in the 1/N_c Expansion: an Update
A new measurement of the Xi^0 mass verifies the accuracy of the
Coleman-Glashow relation at the level predicted by the 1/N_c expansion. Values
for other baryon isospin mass splittings are updated, and continue to agree

1/N_c Expansion of the Heavy Baryon Isgur-Wise Functions
The 1/N_c expansion of the heavy baryon Isgur-Wise functions is discussed.
Because of the contracted SU(2N_f) light quark spin-flavor symmetry, the
universality relations among the Isgur-Wise functions of \Lambda_b to \Lambda_c
and \Sigma_b^{(*)} to \Sigma_c^{(*)} are valid up to the order of 1/N_c^2.Comment: 7 pages, latex, no figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Automated tracking of the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus)
The electronic, physical, biological and environmental factors involved in the automated remote tracking of the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus) are identified. The current status of the manatee as an endangered species is provided. Brief descriptions of existing tracking and position locating systems are presented to identify the state of the art in these fields. An analysis of energy media is conducted to identify those with the highest probability of success for this application. Logistic questions such as the means of attachment and position of any equipment to be placed on the manatee are also investigated. Power sources and manateeborne electronics encapsulation techniques are studied and the results of a compter generated DF network analysis are summarized
Technology requirements for future Earth-to-geosynchronous orbit transportation systems. Volume 1: Executive summary
Technologies including accelerated technology that are critical to performance and/or provide cost advantages for future space transportation systems are identified. Mission models are scoped and include priority missions, and cargo missions. Summary data, providing primary design concepts and features, are given for the SSTO, HLLV, POTV, and LCOTV vehicles. Significant system costs and total system costs in terms of life cycle costs in both discounted and undiscounted dollars are summarized for each of the vehicles
VTOL in ground effect flows for closely spaced jets
Results of a series of in ground effect twin jet tests are presented along with flow models for closely spaced jets to help predict pressure and upwash forces on simulated aircraft surfaces. The isolated twin jet tests revealed unstable fountains over a range of spacings and jet heights, regions of below ambient pressure on the ground, and negative pressure differential in the upwash flow field. A separate computer code was developed for vertically oriented, incompressible jets. This model more accurately reflects fountain behavior without fully formed wall jets, and adequately predicts ground isobars, upwash dynamic pressure decay, and fountain lift force variation with height above ground

Technological requirements and forecasts of rocket engine parameters and launch vehicles for future Earth to geosynchronous orbit transportation systems are presented. The parametric performance, weight, and envelope data for the LOX/CH4, fuel cooled, staged combustion cycle and the hydrogen cooled, expander bleed cycle engine concepts are discussed. The costing methodology and ground rules used to develop the engine study are summarized. The weight estimating methodology for winged launched vehicles is described and summary data, used to evaluate and compare weight data for dedicated and integrated O2/H2 subsystems for the SSTO, HLLV and POTV are presented. A Comparison of Semi-Analytic and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Galaxy Formation
We compare the statistical properties of galaxies found in two different
models of hierarchical galaxy formation: the semi-analytic model of Cole et al.
and the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of Pearce et al.
Using a `stripped-down' version of the semi-analytic model which mimics the
resolution of the SPH simulations and excludes physical processes not included
in them, we find that the two models produce an ensemble of galaxies with
remarkably similar properties, although there are some differences in the gas
cooling rates and in the number of galaxies that populate halos of different
mass. The full semi-analytic model, which has effectively no resolution limit
and includes a treatment of star formation and supernovae feedback, produces
somewhat different (but readily understandable) results. Agreement is
particularly good for the present-day global fractions of hot gas, cold dense
(i.e. galactic) gas and uncollapsed gas, for which the SPH and stripped-down
semi-analytic calculations differ by at most 25%. In the most massive halos,
the stripped-down semi-analytic model predicts, on the whole, up to 50% less
gas in galaxies than is seen in the SPH simulations. The two techniques
apportion this cold gas somewhat differently amongst galaxies in a given halo.
This difference can be tracked down to the greater cooling rate in massive
halos in the SPH simulation compared to the semi-analytic model. (abridged)Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, to appear in MNRAS. Significantly extended to

Spin-Flavor Structure of Large N Baryons
The spin-flavor structure of large N baryons is described in the 1/N
expansion of QCD using quark operators. The complete set of quark operator
identities is obtained, and used to derive an operator reduction rule which
simplifies the 1/N expansion. The operator reduction rule is applied to the
axial currents, masses, magnetic moments and hyperon non-leptonic decay
amplitudes in the limit, to first order in breaking, and
without assuming symmetry. The connection between the Skyrme and quark
representations is discussed. An explicit formula is given for the quark model
operators in terms of the Skyrme model operators to all orders in for

Measurement of the half-life of 198Au in a non-metal: High-precision measurement shows no host-material dependence
We have measured the half-life of the beta decay of 198Au to be 2.6948(9) d,
with the nuclide sited in an insulating environment. Comparing this result with
the half-life we measured previously with a metallic environment, we find the
half-lives in both environments to be the same within 0.04%, thus contradicting
a prediction that screening from a "plasma" of quasi-free electrons in a metal
increases the half-life by as much as 7%
