Minimally Allowed Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Rates From Approximate Flavor Symmetries
Neutrinoless double beta decay () is among the only realistic
probes of Majorana neutrinos. In the standard scenario, dominated by light
neutrino exchange, the process amplitude is proportional to , the
element of the Majorana mass matrix. Naively, current data allows for vanishing
, but this should be protected by an appropriate flavor symmetry. All
such symmetries lead to mass matrices inconsistent with oscillation
phenomenology. I perform a spurion analysis to break all possible Abelian
symmetries that guarantee vanishing rates and search for
minimally allowed values. I survey 230 broken structures to yield
values and current phenomenological constraints under a variety of scenarios.
This analysis also extracts predictions for both neutrino oscillation
parameters and kinematic quantities. Assuming reasonable tuning levels, I find
that eV at 99% confidence. Bounds below this value
might indicate the Dirac neutrino nature or the existence of new light (eV-MeV
scale) degrees of freedom that can potentially be probed elsewhere.Comment: 19 Pages, 4 .eps Figures, 3 Table
Shocks in supersonic sand
We measure time-averaged velocity, density, and temperature fields for steady
granular flow past a wedge and calculate a speed of granular pressure
disturbances (sound speed) equal to 10% of the flow speed. The flow is
supersonic, forming shocks nearly identical to those in a supersonic gas.
Molecular dynamics simulations of Newton's laws and Monte Carlo simulations of
the Boltzmann equation yield fields in quantitative agreement with experiment.
A numerical solution of Navier-Stokes-like equations agrees with a molecular
dynamics simulation for experimental conditions excluding wall friction.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Effective field theory and the quark model
We analyze the connections between the quark model (QM) and the description
of hadrons in the low-momentum limit of heavy-baryon effective field theory in
QCD. By using a three-flavor-index representation for the effective baryon
fields, we show that the ``nonrelativistic'' constituent QM for baryon masses
and moments is completely equivalent through O(m_s) to a parametrization of the
relativistic field theory in a general spin--flavor basis. The flavor and spin
variables can be identified with those of effective valence quarks. Conversely,
the spin-flavor description clarifies the structure and dynamical
interpretation of the chiral expansion in effective field theory, and provides
a direct connection between the field theory and the semirelativistic models
for hadrons used in successful dynamical calculations. This allows dynamical
information to be incorporated directly into the chiral expansion. We find, for
example, that the striking success of the additive QM for baryon magnetic
moments is a consequence of the relative smallness of the non-additive

Central European foreign exchange markets: a cross-spectral analysis of the 2007 financial crisis
This paper investigates co-movements between currency markets of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Euro in the year following the drying up of money markets in August 2007. The paper shows that assessing the degree of foreign currency co-movement by correlation can lead to concluding, erroneously, that financial contagion has not occurred. Using cross-spectral methods, the paper shows that defining contagion as changes in the structure of co-movements of asset prices encompasses more of the complex nature of exchange rate dynamics. What is shown is that, following August 2007, there is increased in the intensity of co-movements, but non-linearly. Focusing on the activities of a mix of banks and currency managers, it is suggested that changes in the structure of currency interaction present an unfavourable view of the contagion experienced by at least three of these currencies
Stories as personal coaching philosophy
The importance of coaches developing and articulating a personal coaching philosophy which encapsulates their values and beliefs is widely recognised. Yet it is also acknowledged that many coaches resist what appears an abstract task or find it to be of limited use in their day-to-day practice. In this paper we explore the potential of an alternative approach to developing and articulating a personal coaching philosophy: storytelling. Following a discussion of the potential of stories, we present a story written by one coach which expresses her personal philosophy in a way that is firmly rooted in her coaching practice. Storytelling approaches, we suggest, can reveal the connections between abstract/general philosophy and the personal embodied experience of coaching. We reflect on the possibilities and problems of using stories as philosophy and offer some suggestions for how coaches may be supported in developing their coaching philosophy through storytelling
Pauli Paramagnetic Effects on Vortices in Superconducting TmNi2B2C
The magnetic field distribution around the vortices in TmNi2B2C in the
paramagnetic phase was studied experimentally as well as theoretically. The
vortex form factor, measured by small-angle neutron scattering, is found to be
field independent up to 0.6 Hc2 followed by a sharp decrease at higher fields.
The data are fitted well by solutions to the Eilenberger equations when
paramagnetic effects due to the exchange interaction with the localized 4f Tm
moments are included. The induced paramagnetic moments around the vortex cores
act to maintain the field contrast probed by the form factor.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The Decuplet Revisited in PT
The paper deals with two issues. First, we explore the quantitiative
importance of higher multiplets for properties of the decuplet in
chiral perturbation theory. In particular, it is found that the lowest order
one--loop contributions from the Roper octet to the decuplet masses and
magnetic moments are substantial. The relevance of these results to the chiral
expansion in general is discussed. The exact values of the magnetic moments
depend upon delicate cancellations involving ill--determined coupling
constants. Second, we present new relations between the magnetic moments of the
decuplet that are independent of all couplings. They are exact at the
