Kyle Warnock is a young queer person living in southern Maine whose non-profit, QueerlyME, has taken off to provide resources for the queer community in Maine. Starting as a photo documentary, QueerlyME is that, a resource directory and an event planning organization that focuses on queer activities outside of the traditional queer nightlife scene. Warnock talks about his experience growing up in South Dakota, coming out and the impacts of that. He also talks about his passion for connecting queer people with QueerlyME and the impact the organization has had on his life and the lives of many queer Mainers. Warnock strives towards making the outdoors more LGBTQ+ friendly.https://digitalcommons.usm.maine.edu/querying_ohproject/1097/thumbnail.jp

Learning Amid Disruption: Bouncing Forward Into a Changed World

    Get PDF
The philanthropic sector has come to recognize the importance of bringing a systems lens to its work, seeking to influence upstream drivers of complex problems, and being adaptive in its approaches instead of implementing static, multiyear plans. Yet, integrating these concepts into practice continues to pose a challenge. Humanity United — a foundation dedicated to cultivating the conditions for enduring freedom and peace — had been grappling with this charge when the disruption caused by COVID-19 led it into a crisis response mode in 2020, similar to many other philanthropic institutions. That disruption also challenged our old ways of being, doing, and thinking, leading to new insights and actions related to equity and power-sharing. This article explores the journey Humanity United went through in 2020, focusing on the disruption as a moment to bounce forward rather than trying to preserve the past. We found ourselves rethinking our old ways of seeking to change systems and embracing the future as emergent and unpredictable. We leaned into foresight, complexity science, and emergent strategy as tools for tackling this uncertainty. We pushed ourselves at all levels of leadership and staff to understand our role, our power, and how to show up differently with our partners in the systems we collectively seek to transform

Applying Design Thinking to Reimagine Our First Year Experience – Evidence Gained from Prototype Projects in Three Irish Institutions

Our key focus sees the conference highlight the beneficial impact of Student and Staff Partnerships on the first year experience. We believe that the staff-student conversation is one of the best avenues for change and throughout the conference would want to create a vibrant climate in which staff and students engage in discussions about the future of the first year experience. This will build upon the reputation the host university has for its student engagement approach which sees students as partners in co-creating the learning experience. Therefore, we would anticipate sessions that showcase how first year practice has been influenced by or even co-created through engagement with the student voice

Cooperatives and the State: The Case of Ontario

    Get PDF
In the early 2000s, the cooperative movement in Ontario came together in order to lobby its provincial government for active cooperative development support programs. Momentum was building for these types of programs. Already, many provincial governments had implemented active support programs in their jurisdiction. Despite having one of the largest cooperative sectors in Canada, Ontario was lagging behind. This article assesses the progress of the efforts of the Ontario cooperative movement to date. It details how the Ontario cooperative movement developed a sectoral identity for itself and framed its objectives in an effort to strengthen its relationship with the Ontario government.RÉSUMÉLe mouvement coopératif en Ontario s'est rassemblé au début des années 2000 afin de faire pression sur le gouvernement provincial pour qu'il développe des programmes de soutient actif pour coopératives.

    Method Illustration

This article outlines a form of practice formed on BA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, called method illustration. It alludes to an embodiment of experience and understanding before or during the production of illustration in relation to a topic or theme, challenging the expectation of illustration always ending on an image. It plays on the term method acting, which is built on techniques from the Stanislavski System and contemporized. The article includes examples of students work and how this practice can be applied

Contributions Made by Undergraduates to Research Projects: Using the CREDIT Taxonomy to Assess Undergraduate Research Experiences.

The authors developed a novel tool, the CREDIT URE, to define and measure roles performed by undergraduate students working in research placements. Derived from an open-source taxonomy for determining authorship credit, the CREDIT URE defines 14 possible roles, allowing students and their research mentors to rate the degree to which students participate in each role. The tool was administered longitudinally across three cohorts of undergraduate student-mentor pairs involved in a biomedical research training program for students from diverse backgrounds. Students engaged most frequently in roles involving data curation, investigation, and writing. Less frequently, students engaged in roles related to software development, supervision, and funding acquisition. Students\u27 roles changed over time as they gained experience. Agreement between students and mentors about responsibility for roles was high

Measuring linkage quality with hashed identifiers: An example using PAYE - ASHE

    Get PDF
Objectives ADR-UK supplied the Wage and Employment Dynamics (WED) research team with Pay as You Earn (PAYE) data linked to Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) data. This presentation explains the methodology taken to link PAYE and ASHE databases together, along with quality assurance and analysis of the linked data. Methods The data were primarily linked using deterministic linkage methods on an encrypted National Insurance Number (NINo) variable. A total of four Pay as You Earn tables were linked to the ASHE data. Where a PAYE table contained an encrypted NINo variable, the PAYE table was linked to the ASHE database using exact matching on NINo. Where a PAYE table did not contain an encrypted NINo variable, the table was linked to another PAYE table with an existing NINo variable first and then linked to the ASHE data. Results As multiple HMRC tables were linked to the ASHE database, the linkage rate for each table varies. However, at least 0.93% of each PAYE table linked to the ASHE database. As the ASHE data is based on a 1% sample of employee jobs taken from HMRC’s PAYE records, these linkage rates are considered relatively high. To compensate for loss of variables needed to calculate linkage quality, the data was filtered into categories on the ‘sex’ and ‘age’ variables and the linkage rates analysed. Bias analysis associated to records with a missing NINo value was also investigated. When the records with a missing NINo value were excluded from calculations, the linkage rate for each table rose to 1%. Conclusion This data will be used to assist research outputs that focus on low-pay labour markets and wage progression, wage inequalities and employment. The presentation will also discuss challenges overcome and lessons learnt from this project, with suggestion of how this information can be used to improve ADR-UK projects going forward
