    Evidence of traffic-related pollutant control in soil-based Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)

    SUDS are being increasingly employed to control highway runoff and have the potential to protect groundwater and surface water quality by minimising the risks of both point and diffuse sources of pollution. While these systems are effective at retaining polluted solids by filtration and sedimentation processes, less is known of the detail of pollutant behaviour within SUDS structures. This paper reports on investigations carried out as part of a co-ordinated programme of controlled studies and field measurements at soft-engineered SUDS undertaken in the UK, observing the accumulation and behaviour of traffic-related heavy metals, oil and PAHs. The field data presented were collected from two extended detention basins serving the M74 motorway in the south-west of Scotland. Additional data were supplied from an experimental lysimeter soil core leaching study. Results show that basin design influences pollutant accumulation and behaviour in the basins. Management and/or control strategies are discussed for reducing the impact of traffic-related pollutants on the aqueous environment

    Validation of computational liquefaction for tailings: Tar Island slump

    Finite-element analyses using critical state theory proved necessary to understand the development of static liquefaction during three recent large tailing dam failures at Fundao (in Brazil), Cadia (in Australia) and Brumadinho (in Brazil). However, the complexity of these events prevents these analyses being viewed as a complete validation of the methodology. Here the authors evaluate a far simpler case of static liquefaction: The 1974 Tar Island slump (in Canada). This upstream slump involved a rapid drop of 5 m during construction of a 12.5 m high upstream raise over loose tailings. While not a dam stability issue, the event has the attraction for validation of being load-induced, with simple geometry, and with known material properties and in situ state. The computed liquefaction develops from a prior drained condition before propagating rapidly undrained-there are similarities to the video record at Brumadinho (an animation is provided as online supplementary material to illustrate this). A range of scenarios are explored, with the base case of taking reported conditions at face value giving deformations close to those measured. An important aspect was using elastic shear moduli determined by geophysical methods. The analyses were carried out with commercial software (Plaxis) and used critical state theory with largely familiar soil properties measured by standard methods

    Mixed population Minority Game with generalized strategies

    We present a quantitative theory, based on crowd effects, for the market volatility in a Minority Game played by a mixed population. Below a critical concentration of generalized strategy players, we find that the volatility in the crowded regime remains above the random coin-toss value regardless of the "temperature" controlling strategy use.     Predictability of large future changes in a competitive evolving population

    The dynamical evolution of many economic, sociological, biological and physical systems tends to be dominated by a relatively small number of unexpected, large changes (`extreme events'). We study the large, internal changes produced in a generic multi-agent population competing for a limited resource, and find that the level of predictability actually increases prior to a large change. These large changes hence arise as a predictable consequence of information encoded in the system's global state.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    We show analytically how the fluctuations (i.e. standard deviation) in the Minority Game (MG) can be made to decrease below the random coin-toss limit if the agents use more general behavioral strategies.     Criticality and finite size effects in a simple realistic model of stock market

    We discuss a simple model based on the Minority Game which reproduces the main stylized facts of anomalous fluctuations in finance. We present the analytic solution of the model in the thermodynamic limit and show that stylized facts arise only close to a line of critical points with non-trivial properties. By a simple argument, we show that, in Minority Games, the emergence of critical fluctuations close to the phase transition is governed by the interplay between the signal to noise ratio and the system size. These results provide a clear and consistent picture of financial markets as critical systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Continuum time limit and stationary states of the Minority Game

    We discuss in detail the derivation of stochastic differential equations for the continuum time limit of the Minority Game. We show that all properties of the Minority Game can be understood by a careful theoretical analysis of such equations. In particular, i) we confirm that the stationary state properties are given by the ground state configurations of a disordered (soft) spin system; ii) we derive the full stationary state distribution; iii) we characterize the dependence on initial conditions in the symmetric phase and iv) we clarify the behavior of the system as a function of the learning rate. This leaves us with a complete and coherent picture of the collective behavior of the Minority Game. Strikingly we find that the temperature like parameter which is introduced in the choice behavior of individual agents turns out to play the role, at the collective level, of the inverse of a thermodynamic temperature.Comment: Revised version (several new results added). 12 pages, 5 figure

    Three-minute wave enhancement in the solar photosphere

    It is a well-known result that the power of five-minute oscillations is progressively reduced by magnetic fields in the solar photosphere. Many authors have pointed out that this fact could be due to a complex interaction of many processes: opacity effects, MHD mode conversion and intrinsic reduced acoustic emissivity in strong magnetic fields. While five-minute oscillations are the dominant component in the photosphere, it has been shown that chromospheric heights are in turn dominated by three-minute oscillations. Two main theories have been proposed to explain their presence based upon resonance filtering in the atmospheric cavity and non linear interactions. In this work we show, through the analysis of IBIS observations of a solar pore in the photospheric Fe I 617.3 nm line, that three-minute waves are already present at the height of formation of this line and that their amplitude depends on the magnetic field strength and is strictly confined in the umbral region.Comment: A&A accepte
