    The Kuroshio Region off Southwest Japan ASUKA 1993-95 Inverted Echo Sounder Data Report

    In order to study the time-varying volume and heat transports of the Kuroshio off southwest Japan, a large number of scientists from Japan and a small number from the U.S.A. formed a group called ASUKA. This group carried out a coordinated investigation which was concentrated in time on the years 1993-95, and in space on a 1,000 km segment of a TOPEX/POSEIDON suborbital track running south-southeast from western Shikoku. This report describes the techniques used to process data collected by ten inverted echo sounders (IES) on this 1,000 km line off Japan, as part of the ASUKA study. The University of Rhode Island (URI) was responsible for all the IES\u27s except IES5 and IES8 which were from the Hydrographic Department of the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency (MSA/HD). The URI IES\u27s were deployed from the Training Vessel Keiten-maru in October 1993 and recovered from the same vessel in November 1995. The MSA/HD IES\u27s were deployed from the Survey Vessel Shoyo in July 1993. IES8 was recovered by Shoyo in May 1994, but unfortunately IES5 was not recovered

    Spitzer Observations of the HII Region NGC 2467: An Analysis of Triggered Star Formation

    We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the region NGC 2467, and use these observations to determine how the environment of an HII region affects the process of star formation. Our observations comprise IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) maps of the region, covering approximately 400 square arcminutes. The images show a region of ionized gas pushing out into the surrounding molecular cloud, powered by an O6V star and two clusters of massive stars in the region. We have identified as candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) 45 sources in NGC 2467 with infrared excesses in at least two mid-infrared colors. We have constructed color-color diagrams of these sources and have quantified their spatial distribution within the region. We find that the YSOs are not randomly distributed in NGC 2467; rather, over 75% of the sources are distributed at the edge of the HII region, along ionization fronts driven by the nearby massive stars. The high fraction of YSOs in NGC 2467 that are found in proximity to gas that has been compressed by ionization fronts supports the hypothesis that a significant fraction of the star formation in NGC 2467 is triggered by the massive stars and the expansion of the HII region.     Current Meter Data Report Ulleung Basin of Japan/East Sea June 1999 to July 2001

    Observations were conducted from June-1999 to July-2001 to study shallow and deepcurrent variability in the southwest Japan/East sea. Data were collected during thefield experiment with a two-dimensional array of pressure-gauge equipped invertedecho sounders (PIES) and deep recording current meters (RCM). This report documents the current meter data, which were collected with an array of 12 mooringsthat was in place for the two-year period. Instrument preparation, calibration anddeployment/ recovery procedures, plus data processing procedures are discussed. Basic statistics of the cleaned hourly data and forty-hour low passed filtered time series are presented, followed by time series of the currents and temperatures measured by the Aanderaa current meters. The final section shows plots of mean current vectors and variance ellipses as well as histograms of current speed and direction
