Between the convention and modernity – from the history of the marriage of Thomas and Katia Manns

The article presents original (against a background of the era) character of the marriage of Thomas and Katia Mann. Basing on the memoires and the correspondence of writer’s family members, there are shown the conventional and modern elements of their marital union, in the context of the personal relations, as well as from the perspective of the progeny upbringing model. The structure of the article has got the chronological and problem character. In the first part of the deliberations there is presented the youthful experiences of Thomas Mann and Katia Prings­heim, up to the moment of their entering into marriage (1904). In the second there is analysed the process of the forming of the marital and parental relations of the Manns (1904–1914). The third part of the text presents the evolution of the position of Katia Mann in the couple (1914–1919). In the last part of the article there is done the overall analysis of the character of Thomas and Katia Mann’s marital relations, with the emphasizing of the traditional and the unconventional characteristics of their marriage.Artykuł prezentuje oryginalny na tle epoki charakter małżeństwa Tomasza i Katii Mannów. Opierając się na pamiętnikach i korespondencji członków rodziny pisarza, ukazano konwencjonalne oraz nowoczesne elementy ich związku, zarówno w kontekście relacji osobistych, jak i przez pryzmat modelu wychowania potomstwa. Konstrukcja artykułu ma charakter chronologiczno-problemowy. W pierwszej części rozważań przedstawiono młodzieńczy bagaż doświadczeń Tomasza Manna i Katii Prings­heim do momentu zawarcia przez nich związku małżeńskiego (1904). W drugiej części przeanalizowano proces formowania się relacji małżeńsko-rodzicielskich wspomnianej pary (1904–1914). Trzecia część prezentacji przedstawia ewolucję pozycji w związku Katii Mann (1914–1919). W ostatniej części artykułu dokonano zbiorczej analizy charakteru małżeńskich relacji Tomasza i Katii Mannów z uwypukleniem tradycyjnych i nowoczesnych cech ich małżeństwa

Amazon and Erynis, or Erika’s Mann (1905–1969) struggle with life

This paper provides an image of complex fortunes of Eryka Mann, the eldest daughter of novelist Thomas Mann, one of the six of his children. She had many talents and did various jobs: as an actress, a journalist, a feature writer, a war correspondent, and as a writer of children’s literature. After Hitler came to power, she left Germany, following other members of Mann family. When in exile, she was directing “Die Pfeffermühle”, a political cabaret, and she was a lecturer in the United States, and then, after the Second World War, she was an assistant of her father and a rescuer of his literary legacy. From a long perspective, she might be treated as a paradigm of an emancipated woman, who was intellectually active and sharp in her opinions, uncompromising in her fight for liberties in the public sphere as well as in private

Aus der Geschichte der deutschen antifaschistischen Exilpresse „Die Sammlung” von Klaus Mann (1933-1935)

Wydanie publikacji dofinansowane przez Komitet Badań NaukowychDer Artikel präsentiert ein wesentliches Fragment aus dem Leben deutscher literarischer Emigration nach dem Jahre 1933 - die Geschichte der Monatsschrift „Die Sammlung” von Klaus Mann. Aufgrund einer ausführlichen Analyse wurde der Charakter, ideologische Ziele und die wichtigste Problematik der Zeitschrift vorgestellt. Der Aufsatz beschreibt eine allmähliche, sukzessive Evolution des Klaus Manns Vorhabens - von der literarischen bis zur politisch-intellektuellen Zeitschrift, die auf wesentliche Ereignisse sowohl im Reich, als auch im Westeuropa reagiert hatte. Mit Hilfe der „Sammlungs” - Texte wurde auch die publizistische Tätigkeit, Konzeptionen und erste öffentliche Initiativen des deutschen Exils dargestellt. Die Geschichte der Zeitschrift wurde im Vergleich mit den anderen Titel der Exilpresse vorgelegt.Zadanie pt. „Fighters for freedom” and „adventurers” – the Germans in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939)

The article presents the genesis, forms and implications of the involvment of the persons of German nationality in the Spanish Civil War. The mentioned problems were showed from the perspective of the activity of two German groups – the supporters of general Franco (Legion Condor and war correspondents from the Third Reich) and the adherents of the Popular Front (anti-Nazi emigrants from Germany). The activity of each group was subjected with the use of the following research questions: the motives of the participation in the Spanish Civil War, the forms and the specific features of their commitment (voluntaries), the nature of the relations with the ordinary Spanish people and with the Spanish authorities (in the case of Nazis with the Nationalists, in case of anti-Nazis with the Republicans). In the last part of the article the assessment of the Germans’ involvement in the Spanish Civil War was presented, as well as the post-war years of participants.Artykuł prezentuje genezę, formy i implikacje zaangażowania osób narodowości niemieckiej w wojnę domową Hiszpanii. Wspomniane zagadnienie ukazane zostało przez pryzmat aktywności dwóch grup Niemców – sympatyków generała Franco (Legion Condor, korespondenci z Rzeszy) oraz zwolenników rządu Frontu Ludowego (antynazistowscy emigranci z Niemiec). Działalność każdej z tych grup została przeanalizowana pod kątem następujących kwestii badawczych: motywy udziału w hiszpańskiej wojnie domowej, formy i specyfika zaangażowania (ochotnicy), charakter relacji ze zwykłymi mieszkańcami Hiszpanii oraz reprezentantami władzy (w przypadku nazistów – z nacjonalistami, w przypadku antynazistów – z republikanami). W końcowej części artykułu przedstawiono bilans niemieckiego zaangażowania w hiszpańską wojnę domową oraz losy niemieckich uczestników konfliktu po jej zakończeniu

„Misja na Wschodzie”. Z historii działalności Związku Dziewcząt Niemieckich (BDM) w Kraju Warty (1940–1945)

Artykuł prezentuje jedną form działalności Niemieckiego Związku Dziewcząt (BDM) w czasie II wojny światowej, a mianowicie program „misji na Wschodzie” (BDM-Osteinsatz). Wspomniany problem przedstawiony został na przykładzie Kraju Warty – największej jednostki terytorialnej utworzonej przez Niemców na wcielonych do III Rzeszy terenach polskich.We wprowadzeniu do rozważań omówiono specyfikę niemieckiego „mitu Wschodu” oraz jego rolę w edukacji młodzieży w nazistowskiej Rzeszy. Następnie ukazano przyczyny i okoliczności zainicjowania programu „misji na Wschodzie” przez kierownictwo Związku Dziewcząt Niemieckich. W centralnej części artykułu zaprezentowano główne formy aktywności uczestniczek BDM-Osteinsatz – pracę z niemieckimi przesiedleńcami z Europy Wschodniej (deutsche Umsiedler) oraz członkami przedwojennej mniejszości niemieckiej w Wielkopolsce (Volksdeutsche). W tej części tekstu ukazano także stosunek uczestniczek programu do polskiej i żydowskiej ludności w Kraju Warty.W podsumowaniu dokonano analizy roli programu „misji na Wschodzie” w niemieckiej polityce okupacyjnej na ziemiach polskich. W epilogu przedstawiono również powojenny stosunek uczestniczek BDM-Osteinsatz do ich działalności w ramach programu. “Mission to the East”. From the history of the activity of the League of German Girls (BDM) in the Wartheland (1940–1945)The article presents one of the forms of the activity of the League of German Girls (BDM – Bund Deutscher Mädel), i.e. the carrying out of the programme “Mission to the East” (BDM-Osteinsatz) during the Second World War. The geographical scope of the study spans the territory of the Reichsgau Wartheland – the biggest among the districts established on the Polish lands incorporated directly to the Third Reich.The introduction to the article shows the specificity of German “Myth of the East”, as well as its role in the education of the youth in Nazi Germany. The following part of the text presents the creation and the organization of the BDM-Osteinsatz in the Wartheland. The article focuses on the main activities of the participants of the “Mission to the East“ – the work with the German people displaced by the Nazi authorities from the Eastern Europe and with the representatives of German pre-war minority in Poland (Volksdeutsche). This part of the text presents also the attitudes of the BDM-members towards the Polish and Jewish population in the Wartheland. The summary of the article contains the elaboration of the role of the BDM-Osteinsatz in the German occupation policy on the Polish territories, as well as the post-war ways of the judgement of the “Mission to the East” by its participants

Changes in the position of women in West Germany after the Second World War – continuities and breakthroughs

The article presents the main changes of the situation of women in Western Germany after the Second World War. The cosiderations are based on the femal diaries from this period, as well as on the specialist literature. The first part of the text shows professional and educational activity of women in Germany in the years 1945–1949 and the femal part in the restoring of the country from the war damages. The second part of the article presents the occurence of the return to the traditional patterns of feminity in Federal Republic of Germany in time of the Christian Democracy rules (1949–1965). The third part of the cosiderations shows the effects of „the 1968 Revolution” for the women’s situation in Western Germany in time of the domination of the Social Democrats in this country (1969–1982). The fourth part of the text presents the increase of the real position of women in Federal Republic of Germany in the Eighties, in the context of the development of the civil society in West Germany
