Critical Speed Analysis of a Turbine Rotor

    Get PDF
Critical Speed Analysis was carried out for a given Turbine Rotor configuration. A computer program based on transfer matrix method has been used for the analysis. Only the first critical was found to occur in the speed range of interest. This critical was well below the rated operating speed with rigid body mode for the probable range of support stiffness

DEVELOPMENT OF AN ADVANCED HIGH PRESSURE RATIO TRANSONIC FAN STAGE. PART-I: DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
A high performance fan stage of pressure ratio 2.0 is being designed and developed under a joint programme between Chinese Aeronautical Establishment (CAE) China and National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore, India.. Special features of the aerodynamic design are i) forward blade sweep and lean to increase the ability to bear intake distortion ii) reverse camber fan tip to reduce losses via pre compression iii) low aspect ratio of the blades to maximize stall margin. The blade will be fabricated using laminates of Carbon/Epoxy composites with tip shroud so as to limit the blade stress and deformation. Stress analysis was carried out using MSC/NASTRAN Finite Element Package. The fan stage has undergone a series of design improvements. Comparison of typical results obtained at NAL and BUAA is shown for the final version of the fan stage TTT98-29

A study on stability analysis of atrial repolarization variability using ARX model in sinus rhythm and atrial tachycardia ECGs

© 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd Background The interaction between the PTa and PP interval dynamics from the surface ECG is seldom explained. Mathematical modeling of these intervals is of interest in finding the relationship between the heart rate and repolarization variability. Objective The goal of this paper is to assess the bounded input bounded output (BIBO) stability in PTa interval (PTaI) dynamics using autoregressive exogenous (ARX) model and to investigate the reason for causing instability in the atrial repolarization process. Methods Twenty-five male subjects in normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and ten male subjects experiencing atrial tachycardia (AT) were included in this study. Five minute long, modified limb lead (MLL) ECGs were recorded with an EDAN SE-1010 PC ECG system. The number of minute ECGs with unstable segments (N us ) and the frequency of premature activation (PA) (i.e. atrial activation) were counted for each ECG recording and compared between AT and NSR subjects. Results The instability in PTaI dynamics was quantified by measuring the numbers of unstable segments in ECG data for each subject. The unstable segments in the PTaI dynamics were associated with the frequency of PA. The presence of PA is not the only factor causing the instability in PTaI dynamics in NSR subjects, and it is found that the cause of instability is mainly due to the heart rate variability (HRV). C onclusion The ARX model showed better prediction of PTa interval dynamics in both groups. The frequency of PA is significantly higher in AT patients than NSR subjects. A more complex model is needed to better identify and characterize healthy heart dynamics

ShapeCodes: Self-Supervised Feature Learning by Lifting Views to Viewgrids

We introduce an unsupervised feature learning approach that embeds 3D shape information into a single-view image representation. The main idea is a self-supervised training objective that, given only a single 2D image, requires all unseen views of the object to be predictable from learned features. We implement this idea as an encoder-decoder convolutional neural network. The network maps an input image of an unknown category and unknown viewpoint to a latent space, from which a deconvolutional decoder can best "lift" the image to its complete viewgrid showing the object from all viewing angles. Our class-agnostic training procedure encourages the representation to capture fundamental shape primitives and semantic regularities in a data-driven manner---without manual semantic labels. Our results on two widely-used shape datasets show 1) our approach successfully learns to perform "mental rotation" even for objects unseen during training, and 2) the learned latent space is a powerful representation for object recognition, outperforming several existing unsupervised feature learning methods.Comment: To appear at ECCV 201

Anisotropic constitutive modeling for nickel base single crystal superalloy Rene N4 at 982 C

    Get PDF
A back stress/drag stress constitutive model based on a crystallographic approach to model single crystal anisotropy is presented. Experimental results demonstrated the need for the back stress variable in the inelastic flow equations. Experimental findings suggested that back stress is orientation dependent and controls both strain hardening and recovery characteristics. Due to the observed stable fatigue loops at 1800 F, drag stress is considered constant for this temperature. The constitutive model operated with constraints determined only from tensile data was extensively tested from simple tensile and fatigue to complicated strain hold tests. The model predicted very well under those conditions

Magnetic skyrmions and skyrmion clusters in the helical phase of Cu2_2OSeO3_3

Skyrmions are nanometric spin whirls that can be stabilized in magnets lacking inversion symmetry. The properties of isolated skyrmions embedded in a ferromagnetic background have been intensively studied. We show that single skyrmions and clusters of skyrmions can also form in the helical phase and investigate theoretically their energetics and dynamics. The helical background provides natural one-dimensional channels along which a skyrmion can move rapidly. In contrast to skyrmions in ferromagnets, the skymion-skyrmion interaction has a strong attractive component and thus skyrmions tend to form clusters with characteristic shapes. These clusters are directly observed in transmission electron microscopy measurements in thin films of Cu2_2OSeO3_3. Topological quantization, high mobility and the confinement of skyrmions in channels provided by the helical background may be useful for future spintronics devices.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 4 pages supplemen

Historical and Projected Surface Temperature over India during the 20th and 21st century.

    Get PDF
Surface Temperature (ST) over India has increased by ~0.055 K/decade during 1860-2005 and follows the global warming trend. Here, the natural and external forcings (e.g., natural and anthropogenic) responsible for ST variability are studied from Coupled Model Inter-comparison phase 5 (CMIP5) models during the 20th century and projections during the 21st century along with seasonal variability. Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and Land Use (LU) are the major factors that gave rise to warming during the 20th century. Anthropogenic Aerosols (AA) have slowed down the warming rate. The CMIP5 projection over India shows a sharp increase in ST under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 8.5 where it reaches a maximum of 5 K by the end of the 21st century. Under RCP2.6 emission scenarios, ST increases up to the year 2050 and decreases afterwards. The seasonal variability of ST during the 21st century shows significant increase during summer. Analysis of rare heat and cold events for 2080-2099 relative to a base period of 1986-2006 under RCP8.5 scenarios reveals that both are likely to increase substantially. However, by controlling the regional AA and LU change in India, a reduction in further warming over India region might be achieved

Earlier work from this laboratory had identified, mapped and characterised an intragenic suppressor(fitA24) as well as an extragenic suppressor(fitB) for the temperature-sensitive transcription defective mutationfitA76 inEscherichia coli In this communication we report the results of experiments on RNA synthesis and decay of pulse labelled RNA in strains harbouringfit A76,fitB, fitA24, fitA76-fitA24, fitA76-fitB mutation(s) as well as in the isogenicfitA + fitB+ strain. Taken together with earlier results, this indicates that thefitA andfitB gene products could be involved in the expression of some classes of genes including genes coding for ribosomal proteins. The implications of these results for thein vivo control of transcription inEscherichia coli are discussed

Root cause analysis of bowl-mill pinion shaft failures

    Get PDF
AbstractPinion shafts made of 18CrNiMo7-6 material, are used for transmitting torque from motor to gear box used in bowl mills of fossil fuel fired power plants. This work elucidates the metallurgical investigation that was carried out on a failed pinion shaft for analyzing the cause for failure. Fractography revealed the initiation of a crack from the keyway corner. Mechanical testing indicated that the yield strength of the material was lower than the specified value. Observation of the bowl mill at site after failure indicated that hard lumps were present in the bull ring segment, which clearly made it evident that there was sudden jamming of it which in turn led to overloading of the pinion shaft leading to the initiation of crack. A small overload fracture zone was also observed in the interior of the shaft suggesting low stress but high stress concentration torsional failure. Hence, this investigation concluded that this was a consequential failure
