Distribution of amino acids in sediments of a mangrove ecosystem, west coast of India
The seasonal variability of free and protein bound amino acids (AAs) in the sediments of mangrove ecosystem, west coast of India were studied. AAs exhibited significant variability with depths in the sediments of two mangrove ecosystems, Mangalavanam and Vypeen, situated on the west coast of India. Of the ten AAs detected, serine (Ser) was the most abundant followed by threonine (Thr), glycine (Gly), aspartic acid (Asp), tyrosine (Tyr), glutamic acid (Glu) and alanine (Ala). The trend in AA relative abundance in the sediment and leaves exhibits a close similarity indicating a major influence of plants in the supply of these compounds to the sediment. The most common AAs at both stations are Asp, which is abundant in sediments with a large organic inputs followed by Glu, which is abundant in phytoplankton and marine bacteria. Ser, Thr and Gly, which constitute diatom cell walls, were also found in significant concentration. The changes in relative abundance of various AAs with depth indicate significant seasonal variability. This may be due to the selective microbial utilization of these AAs at different depths. Technology Assessment and Refinement of Farming Practices in Vypeen Island, Kerala: Implications for Designing Effective and Socially Optimal Development Strategies
Traditional farming practices of diverse production systems in a defined coastal agro-ecosystem is
assessedthrough participatoryapproachesand later refinedthrougha plannedset of techno-interventions,as
part of the widely acclaimed Institution Village Linkage Programme (IVLP). The strategies adopted for the
implementationand executionof IVLPbythe Central MarineFisheriesResearchInstitute,Kochi hasembedded
with tools for a socially optimal development paradigm. The techno-interventions are carried out in a coastal
village of Vypeen Island -Elamkunnapuzha- in Ernakulam district during first phase and later to the whole of
Vypeen Island, for horizontally expanded interventions in second phase. The present paper focuses on the
extension processes that contributedto the success of IVLPand alsoon a comparativeeconomic assessment
of the consumptive value of the various produce brewed out of plannedscientific interventions in aquaculture,
livestock management and agri-hortifarming.The study made useof the secondary data from IVLPof CMFRI
and a rapid rural appraisal on linkages and sustainability components. The IVLP has been successful in
building instantaneous linkagesamong farmers, fisherfolk, researchinstitutions, agricultural universitiesand
the local extension system. The linkages established by IVLP is assessed by way of actor-linkage-matrix
developed for monitoring partnership building and found that it has made significant linkages with various
institutions. There is enough space for building further linkages especially with NGOs and other community
based organisations for an intensivesustainability of the project benefit. Onthe output side, the comparative
economic assessment revealsthe considerable improvement in overall productionand earnings comparedto
traditional farming practices. Aquaculture demands comparatively more investment than those of livestock
management and agri-horti farming,and resulted in better economic returns
Institution village linkage programme Coastal Agro Ecosystem & Interventions
Agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries provide maximum employment in the primary sector
and form the major source of income and livelihood security of about 70 percent of the population in
India. After the introduction of the liberalisation policy and giving thrust for the adoption of improved
technologies, there has been a spectacular increase in production in all these segments and the country
has witnessed a rapid structural change. Massive adoption of scientific inventions and technological
interventions witnessed revolutionary changes in all sectors of development and quality of life of
people. Achieving self-sufficiency on food front has been one of the finest Indian successes of the
post independence era. The food grain production increased four times (from 50.8 million tonnes
during 1950-51 to 198.7 million tonnes during 2000-01) since independence as compared to the
three-fold increase in population. Further significant advances have also been made in the production
of milk, fish, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables. In fisheries, the country has ushered in the blue revolution
with gross production reaching 5.6 million metric tonnes offish and edible invertebrates during 2000-
2001. India is the second largest Asian country in terms of culture fisheries and the third largest in
terms of capture fisheries (NAAS, 2001). Due to concerted efforts on strategic research and production
technology in oilseeds sector, the country witnessed yellow revolution with the production reaching
25 million tonnes per annum. This was possible as a result of strong agricultural research support
provided by the National Agricultural Research System (NARS)

Dynamic Correction of a Distorted Image Using a Photorefractive Polymeric Composite
We demonstrate, for the first time, the dynamic correction of aberrated images in real-time using a polymeric composite with fast response times. The current novel experimental design is capable of restoring a phase aberrated, image carrying laser beam, to nearly its original quality. The ability to reconstruct images in real-time is demonstrated through the changing of the aberrating medium at various speeds. In addition, this technique allows for the correction of images in motion, demonstrated through the oscillatory movement of the resolution target. We also have demonstrated that important parameters of the materials in the study such as response times, diffraction efficiencies and optical gains all retain high figures of merit values under the current experimental conditions. © 2004 Optical Society of America
