    Covid-19 & Mathematics Achievement: A Casual-Comparative Study

    Learning loss due to COVID-19 and the digital divide will have dire consequences for low-income students. This study used the Faucet Theory (Alexander et al., 2001) as a theoretical framework to determine the extent that the COVID-19 learning environment impacted the Southern Public Schools District’s African American, low-income, and high-income high school students’ proficiency level based on the Algebra I section of the 2020-2021 Louisiana Education Assessment Program (LEAP) assessment. The researcher used archival data from the LEAP, a causal-comparative research design, and a one-way ANOVA to test the hypotheses and answer the research question. The results of the one-way ANOVA indicated that the pre-COVID-19 learning environment had no impact on African American, high-income, and low-income high school students’ average percentages at the mastery and basic proficiency levels, but it had a moderately negative impact on students’ average percentages at the approaching basic (p = .038) and unsatisfactory (p = .021) proficiency levels. The COVID-19 learning environment had no impact on African American, high-income, and low-income high school students’ average percentages at the advanced and basic proficiency levels, but it had a strong negative impact on African American, high-income, and low-income high school students’ average percentages at the mastery (p = .006), approaching basic (p =.007), and unsatisfactory (p = .008) proficiency levels. This study will give additional insights into COVID-19’s impact on the student achievement of a populace most susceptible to learning loss, high school students in a high- poverty school district. It will add to the current knowledge base on high-poverty school districts, distance education, learning loss, the digital divide, and student achievement in mathematics. The results showed that the COVID-19 learning environment widened the achievement gap between high and low income students and increased learning loss for students from specific backgrounds—African-American students and students in low-income households. This study is important because the researcher found that regardless of race or socioeconomic status, a blended teaching methodology of problem solving, individualized tutoring, game-based interaction, and computer assisted practice could significantly increase learning gains in mathematics, especially in cognitive areas. In fact, a blended learning environment could benefit low-performing students more than high-performing students

    A selective role for neuronal activity regulated pentraxin in the processing of sensory-specific incentive value

    Neuronal activity regulated pentraxin (Narp) is a secreted neuronal product which clusters AMPA receptors and regulates excitatory synaptogenesis. Although Narp is selectively enriched in brain, its role in behavior is not known. As Narp is expressed prominently in limbic regions, we examined whether Narp deletion affects performance on tasks used to assess motivational consequences of food-rewarded learning. Narp knock-out (KO) mice were unimpaired in learning simple pavlovian discriminations, instrumental lever pressing, and in acquisition of at least two aspects of pavlovian incentive learning, conditioned reinforcement and pavlovian-instrumental transfer. In contrast, Narp deletion resulted in a substantial deficit in the ability to use specific outcome expectancies to modulate instrumental performance in a devaluation task. In this task, mice were trained to respond on two levers for two different rewards. After training, mice were prefed with one of the two rewards, devaluing it. Responding on both levers was then assessed in extinction. Whereas control mice showed a significant preference in responding on the lever associated with the nondevalued reward, Narp KO mice responded equally on both levers, failing to suppress responding on the lever associated with the devalued reward. Both groups consumed more of the nondevalued reward in a subsequent choice test, indicating Narp KO mice could distinguish between the rewards themselves. These data suggest Narp has a selective role in processing sensory-specific information necessary for appropriate devaluation performance, but not in general motivational effects of reward-predictive cues on performance

    Using GES DISC Data to Study Kilauea Volcano of 2018

    Kilauea volcano in Hawaii which erupted in early May 2018 injected massive amount of SO2 and ash into the atmosphere. The lava flow during the eruption destroyed many home and neighborhoods. The SO2 plume during the eruption of Kilauea volcano is analyzed from May to August 2018 using multiple satellite products such as Level 2 TROPspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and Level 3 Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). GES DISC hosts multi-disciplinary Earth science data sets that can be used to analyze natural disasters, such as the Kilauea volcano. Additionally, GES DISC's Giovanni tool can be used to visualize these data. We acquired OMI through the subsetting function, which is processed by the GES DISC in-house developed backend software Level3/4 Regrider and Subsetter (L34RS) and TROPOMI using OPeNDAP.Data from the OMI OMSO2e product showed elevated levels of SO2 amounts during the eruption between May to August 2018. Similarly, ground-based stations at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park recorded higher SO2 concentrations during the same time period. This study uses wind direction from Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) to analyze the transport and dispersion of SO2 plume and map lava flows from the volcano using thermal images from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Furthermore, satellite observations combined with socioeconomic and public health data are used to analyze its impact in public health
