This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Daptomycin is a lipopeptide antibiotic that kills Gram-positive bacteria by depolarizing their cell membranes. This antibacterial action of daptomycin is correlated with the formation of membrane-associated oligomers. We here examine the number of subunits contained in one oligomer using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The results suggest that the oligomer contains approximately 6 to 7 subunits, or possibly twice this number if it spans both membrane monolayers. This work was supported by an NSERC operating grant to M. Fractal Geometry: An Attractive Choice for Miniaturized Planar Microwave Filter Design

    Get PDF
Various fractal geometries are characterized by the self-similarity and space-filling properties. The space-filling feature has been successfully applied to design multiband antenna structures for a wide variety of multifunction wireless systems. On another hand, the second feature has proved its validity to produce miniaturized antennas and passive microwave circuits including the band-pass filters (BPF). This chapter demonstrates the design of miniaturized microstrip BPFs that are derived from fractal-based DGS resonators. Many microstrip BPFs based on the Minkowski fractal DGS resonators will be presented together with those based on Moore and Peano fractal geometries. Simulation results, of all of the presented BPFs, show that an extra-size reduction can be obtained as the iteration level becomes higher. Measured and simulated results agree well with each other. A comparison has been conducted with other filters based on Peano and Hilbert fractal geometries. The results reveal that the proposed BPF offers acceptable performance and a significant decrease of higher harmonics

A high security and noise immunity of speech based on double chaotic masking

    Get PDF
It is known that increasing the security of the information and reducing the noise effect through public channels are two of the main priorities in developing any communication system. In this article, an efficient, secure communication system with two levels of encryption has been applied to the speech signal. The suggested security approach was implemented by using two different stages of chaotic masking on the signal; one masking was conducted by using Lorenz system and the other masking was built by using Rӧssler chaotic flow system. The main goal of developing this two-chaotic masking approach is to increase the key space and the security of the information. Also, an immunity technique has been implemented in the suggested approach to reduce the noise effect. For practical application purposes, this system was tested with additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The simulation results show that the quality of reconstructed speech signal is changeable according to the used signal to noise ratio (SNR); therefore, a proposed technique based on digital processing method (DPM) was applied to the first masked signal by converting the sampled data from the analog to the binary format. The simulation results show that an 22 dB (SNR) is sufficient to recover the speech signal with minimum noise by using the suggested approach

Maximizing Resource Effectiveness of Highway Infrastructure Maintenance Inspection and Scheduling for Efficient City Logistics Operations

    Get PDF
AbstractThe safe and efficient movement of people and cargo on roadways is dependent on a well functioning highway system which requires effective maintenance policies focused on the maximum use of invested resources. For efficient city logistics operations various components of highway infrastructure, such as pavements, guardrails, and roadside signs must be maintained and kept in acceptable operating condition as elements of an integrated highway network. Due to the shrinking budget for undertaking infrastructure inspection and maintenance activities Resource Effectiveness (RE) becomes paramount. Theoretically, Resource Effectiveness (RE) is intended to get the optimum performance out of a project or investment. Instead of adding more resources (like labor, equipment, etc.), it will concentrate on the prudent utilization of resources or investment. Thus, RE in a broader sense, is concerned with the prudent use of labor, equipment, and material. In this paper we develop an optimization approach for maximizing resource effectiveness of highway infrastructure maintenance investments, subject to budget constraints, based on the concept of the well-known Cobb-Douglas production function. Several examples are presented

An efficient modification and a novel technique combining the homotopy concept with  Adomian decomposition method (ADM) to obtain an accurate analytical solution for Riccati matrix delay differential equation (RMDDE) is introduced  in this paper  . Both methods are very efficient and effective. The whole integral part of ADM is used instead of the integral part of homotopy technique. The major feature in current technique gives us a large convergence region of iterative approximate solutions .The results acquired by this technique give better approximations for a larger region as well as previously. Finally, the results conducted via suggesting an efficient and easy technique, and may be addressed to other non-linear problems
