Measurement and Particle Statistics in the Szilard Engine
A Szilard Engine is a hypothetical device which is able to extract work from
a single thermal reservoir by measuring the position of particles within the
engine. We derive the amount of work that can be extracted from such a device
in the low temperature limit. Interestingly, we show this work is determined by
the information gain of the initial measurement rather than by the number and
type of particles which constitute the working substance. Our work provides
another clear connection between information gain and extractable work in
thermodynamical processes.Comment: 4 page
Rotation of electromagnetic fields and the nature of optical angular momentum
The association of spin and orbital angular momenta of light with its polarization and helical phase fronts is now well established. The problems in linking this with electromagnetic theory, as expressed in Maxwell's equations, are rather less well known. We present a simple analysis of the problems involved in defining spin and orbital angular momenta for electromagnetic fields and discuss some of the remaining challenges. Crucial to our investigation is the duplex symmetry between the electric and magnetic fields
Quantum-Classical Correspondence of Dynamical Observables, Quantization and the Time of Arrival Correspondence Problem
We raise the problem of constructing quantum observables that have classical
counterparts without quantization. Specifically we seek to define and motivate
a solution to the quantum-classical correspondence problem independent from
quantization and discuss the general insufficiency of prescriptive
quantization, particularly the Weyl quantization. We demonstrate our points by
constructing time of arrival operators without quantization and from these
recover their classical counterparts
Probability Measures and projections on Quantum Logics
The present paper is devoted to modelling of a probability measure of logical
connectives on a quantum logic (QL), via a -map, which is a special map on
it. We follow the work in which the probability of logical conjunction,
disjunction and symmetric difference and their negations for non-compatible
propositions are studied.
We study such a -map on quantum logics, which is a probability measure
of a projection and show, that unlike classical (Boolean) logic, probability
measure of projections on a quantum logic are not necessarilly pure
projections.
We compare properties of a -map on QLs with properties of a probability
measure related to logical connectives on a Boolean algebra
Telomere disruption results in non-random formation of de novo dicentric chromosomes involving acrocentric human chromosomes
Copyright: © 2010 Stimpson et al.Genome rearrangement often produces chromosomes with two centromeres (dicentrics) that are inherently unstable because of bridge formation and breakage during cell division. However, mammalian dicentrics, and particularly those in humans, can be quite stable, usually because one centromere is functionally silenced. Molecular mechanisms of centromere inactivation are poorly understood since there are few systems to experimentally create dicentric human chromosomes. Here, we describe a human cell culture model that enriches for de novo dicentrics. We demonstrate that transient disruption of human telomere structure non-randomly produces dicentric fusions involving acrocentric chromosomes. The induced dicentrics vary in structure near fusion breakpoints and like naturally-occurring dicentrics, exhibit various inter-centromeric distances. Many functional dicentrics persist for months after formation. Even those with distantly spaced centromeres remain functionally dicentric for 20 cell generations. Other dicentrics within the population reflect centromere inactivation. In some cases, centromere inactivation occurs by an apparently epigenetic mechanism. In other dicentrics, the size of the alpha-satellite DNA array associated with CENP-A is reduced compared to the same array before dicentric formation. Extrachromosomal fragments that contained CENP-A often appear in the same cells as dicentrics. Some of these fragments are derived from the same alpha-satellite DNA array as inactivated centromeres. Our results indicate that dicentric human chromosomes undergo alternative fates after formation. Many retain two active centromeres and are stable through multiple cell divisions. Others undergo centromere inactivation. Observation of the radiative decay mode of the free neutron
The theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED) predicts that beta decay of the neutron into a proton, electron and antineutrino should be accompanied by a continuous spectrum of soft photons. While this inner bremsstrahlung branch has been previously measured in nuclear beta and electron capture decay, it has never been observed in free neutron decay. Recently, the photon energy spectrum and branching ratio for neutron radiative decay have been calculated using two approaches: a standard QED framework(1-3) and heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory(4) (an effective theory of hadrons based on the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics). The QED calculation treats the nucleons as point-like, whereas the latter approach includes the effect of nucleon structure in a systematic way. Here we observe the radiative decay mode of free neutrons, measuring photons in coincidence with both the emitted electron and proton. We determined a branching ratio of (3.13 +/- 0.34) x 10(-3) (68 per cent level of confidence) in the energy region between 15 and 340 keV, where the uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects. The value is consistent with the predictions of both theoretical approaches; the characteristic energy spectrum of the radiated photons, which differs from the uncorrelated background spectrum, is also consistent with the calculated spectrum.
